It means things are the opposite of how a person would expect them to be.

A person can know numerous truths and can work to make the world a better place by reciting the rosary of the Virgin Mary every day with care and sincerity.

What I mean is that the world believes only what it sees. When Christians are taught the greater reality which is eternal is something more important than what we see. The world, therefore, is backward in its thinking. They value what they see and what perishes as more important. The world tends to think the temporary world and its riches are real, while denying the greater things of the Spirit, judging them to be less important. It is therefore backwards. 

Some people question their beliefs when there is physical evidence to the contrary.  Some people cling to their beliefs and question reality.
