How do older people without children make friends outside cities?

So my wife and I bought a house a few years ago in a nice town far from a major city with a good school district hoping to raise a family in it. It turns out now we can’t have kids. Most people out here have kids due to the good schools and don’t really have time to or want to go out and make friends since they’re so busy with their kids and we can’t really relate to any of these people since we don’t have kids while they do, and have completely different lives than them. Plus we don’t really want to be around kids as they make us jealous and remind us of something we can’t have. How is it possible to make friends in an environment like this. And all our relatives live over 3000 miles away. We basically bought this house for nothing
