Some people think it is the only place in the UK and don't realize there is a lot more to the country than just the city.

The capital city of the UK is London.
I live in the UK and when it is said that our capital is London I am not sure what is meant by 'London'. It could refer to the City of London. Alternatively it could refer to the metropolis known as London.
There are no institutions of the UK Government in the City of London.
The official residence of the UK monarch (Buckingham Palace), the official residence and office of the Prime Minister (10 Downing Street), the area where many government departments are located (Whitehall), the UK Parliament and the UK Supreme Court are all in the City of Westminster.
So, although, the capital of the UK is London it is quite vague what London means in this context.
