Always good to hide a heavy wood/metal baseball bat by the bed, keep a home made pepper spray in the kitchen etc. Of course, it's better to work on break in prevention that 'how to kill an intruder etc'. Replace your door locks on a yearly basis, install a cctv system (really not hard to do) put in a break in alarm, make sure any garden gates are locked etc. make it difficult for them.

UK has no free for all guns so it is relatively safe place to live.  A cricket bat or a hockey stick is more than sufficient. Your hands can be lethal too, but evidently, you never thought about it. Take some martial arts lesson. 

Relax you are not interesting and have nothing of interest to anyone.
