  • Singular Value Decomposition - What is it used for, how do you apply it to practical problems?

    I'd like a better understanding of what SVD is used for and how to apply it.

    I have found that too many descriptions of SVD delve immediately into elegant theoretical discussions of linear algebra. I'm not particularly interested in those details but more in how to apply the technique to real-world problems and get quantifiable results.

    What is the tehnique good for, what class(es) of problem and how to set up a problem so that it can be solved by SVD, and how to interpret the numerical results.

    If you could show a worked example or two, that would be very helpful.
