  • Australian election who to vote for?

Trying to figure out the best from a bad bunch.

Generally a labour voter, but don't really like Rudd.

But dislike Abbott more (and find the policies a bit too right wing for me anyway).

    Won't vote for the greens.

Are there any decent mildly left wing parties?

  • Do you think ants get lonely?

There is one little ant wandering around my kitchen (came in on a bunch of fruit from a fruitshop a long way away so no way for her to signal all her family to invade).

I worry about her. Do you think she is sad being all alone given that she usually lives in such packed conditions.

  • Anyone know about elevators?

So the elevator outside my apartment is not the most reliable. We have got stuck in it once, and more worryingly occasionally it will jolt like airplane turbulence (has happened once to me and separately to my husband over the last couple of months).

Any engineers or builders here that can tell me what is actually going on? The building management just sends some guys to fix it and do not actually say what is happening.

What I really want to know is is it dangerous or is it just something bumping and will never turn into more than that?

We live on the 18th floor and I have a toddler so I really do not want to take the stairs...

  • What is with all the thumbs down?

I get it that you would give someone a thumbs down if they give bad advice (ie Q: how do you carry a baby A: hold onto its big toe and swing it ver your shoulder).

But I see lots of questions on here about personal experiences or feelings (ie Q: what is your favourite vegetable A: broccoli, or Q: do you like the muppets? A: no they scare me).

What is the point of giving negative feedback when people are just telling the truth and not giving bad advice?

  • Different parenting styles?

So my 18 month old has just started the tantrum phase.

Anyway. He does spend quite a lot of time with his grandmother (mother in law) (usually two half days a week alone and we all go to dinner at her place 3 or 4 days a week).

She spoils him. Gives him cookies and basically does whatever he wants if he complains. This is not a problem when we are with him as I just tell him no when I am there but for the 2 days he gets free rain to do whatever he wants.

My husband I have a different attitude and he takes rules really well at home (he knows he is not allowed in the bathroom or kitchen and does not get cookies).

I really have no problem with his grandmother spoiling him. I believe that is one of the benefits of being a grandparent rather than a parent. But I am a bit concerned that the amount she is spoiling him may be affecting his behaviour at home. I am not really sure if his recent tantrums are just normal growing up or weather it is because he is getting mixed messages? If it is making him confused or unhappy I may need to talk to the mothering law about about discipline or not let him go over there as much (which would upset her as she loves him dearly).

    Anyone in a similar situation?

  • Xcode without a mac computer?

I am in the process of learning how to program an ipad app (not trying to do anything fancy).

I have very minimal programming experience so am starting at the basics.

Anyway I do not currently own a mac and cannot really afford to buy one at the moment. My sister is going to lend me her mac for a week later on so I can put the app together.

It would be a lot easier to learn if I had something to practice with. Is there any software I could install on a pc, or use over the internet that would simulate xcode, and give me some hands on experience?

  • Icing Gingerbread house?

So I am making a gingerbread house for the first time.

I managed to make the house and stick it together with icing (my son has an egg white allergy so used a vegan royal icing recipie I found).

Anyway.. Now I need to decorate it.

I was thinking of melting some sugar in a saucepan and drizzling it over the roof to make it shiny and sticky so I can stick lollies along it. Will this work? Or will it just look bad? I was trying to avoid having to coat the roof in thick icing.

  • When do kids learn to share?

So I have a 15 month old son. We had a friend over with her 18 month old.

My son spent most of his time taking away everything that we gave to the 18 month old (who was a wonderful boy by the way and actually statered offering everything to my son).

My boy has not had a lot of contact with other young kids and they were his toys. He will give things to mum or dad if we ask (most of the time, unless it is something that he really wants to hold on to).

So my question. How old was your kid when they learned to share with other children? How did you encorage it?

  • Aladdin roc's egg?

I was reading aladdin (the old version) and in the end the majicians brother tricks aladdin's wife (who does not seem particlarly bright by the way) into asking aladdin to hang a roc's egg from a spire.

When aladdin asks the genie for this the genie gets really cranky at aladdin and accuses him of making him hang his master there. He then tells aladdin that it is the evil guy's plot to kill him

Can someone explain to me what the genie means?

  • Introducing a comfort toy to a 14 month old?

My boy is almost 14 months old and I feel it is about time to move him into his own room (my original plan was 12 months).

He sleeps through most nights now and sleeps in his cot beside my bed.

I thought introducing a comfort object may help ease the transition to his own room?

I am a bit worried that he will end up just playing with the toy and not going to sleep.

He has quite a few toys that he likes and cuddles occasionally while playing. I was thinking of giving him his small teething cow (it has plastic circle things that you can chew on instead of feet) or should I be going for something a bit bigger?

Any experiences doing this or advice?

  • How is a cantelope like an elephant?

My 13 month old son makes a trumpeting noise when he sees elephants (or his toy elephant).

Strangely he also makes that noise when he sees a cantelope.

Any suggestions as to why he would think they are similar?
