  • Why is the Politics section so polarized?

I just saw this section for the first time and I'm utterly scared. On one side are wacky liberals with conspiracy theories and on the other side are ultra-right-wing conservatives practically giving out death threats to the liberals.

Where's everyone else? I know that in real life, at least where I live, the vast majority of people are more centrist than this...

  • How can people keep saying vegetarianism is unhealthy when faced with this?

    http://www.eatright.org/cps/rde/xchg/ada/hs.xsl/ad...

The American Dietetic Association says that vegetarian (including vegan) diets are healthy for people of all ages. Why do some people keep arguing that vegetarianism is unhealthy [often without evidence] when faced with this?

  • What are your cholesterol levels?

If you've had your cholesterol levels measured recently, post them and say whether or not you're eating a "cholesterol-free diet", if you catch my drift.

I'm curious to see what effect a cholesterol-free diet has on cholesterol levels.

    My HDL's 51, my LDL's 36, my triglycerides are 106, and I am on a cholesterol-free diet.

  • What's the perfect vegan "hamburger"?

Lately I've been going through kind of a fake meat phase. I've had some awesome "sausage" and "bacon" but I can't find the perfect burger.

Commercial brands don't really cut it. They just don't taste right.

My local health food store has fresh-made tofu almond patties that are pretty good, but they're not really much like actual burgers.

I went to a natural foods-type cafe a few nights ago and had a burger made of TVP, and it tasted just like the low-quality stuff I had in the school cafeteria in elementary school except it was a lot drier.

How can I acquire the ultimate vegan burger? You can give me a recipe or you can recommend a brand.

And please, anyone even considering telling me to eat a real hamburger, just go away.

  • Does anyone else think people here obsess over calories a little too much?

People here seem to be so obsessed with calories.

It's like some people think "low-calorie" or "low-carb" and "healthy" mean the same thing. Healthy eating isn't about cutting calories or cutting carbs! It's about eating healthy food!

People seem to think getting 100 calories from white bread is better than getting 110 calories from whole wheat bread.

People think that taking diet pills or going on a low-carb diet or a high-protein diet or a low-fat diet or whatever will make them healthy and lose weight.

Eating healthy isn't about that kind of thing! It's about eating a balanced variety of natural foods!

  • Why do people respond to serious requests for vegetarian recipes and stuff with HILARIOUS jokes?

It seems like whenever somebody asks a question around here they get at least one HILARIOUS vegetarian joke.

Here's how the average question in the Vegetarian/Vegan section goes:

Question: "I'm looking for a good recipe for my vegetarian significant other, any ideas?"

Answer: "Vegetarian means bad hunter! LOL!"

Just as bad are the people who give recipes for non-vegetarian items. We get the point, people. You don't like vegetarians. How would people like that feel if they asked for a nice pork recipe and we gave them a recipe for vegetarian chili or something?

  • Is falafel just about the most awesome thing ever?

You know it is. And don't say "oh no, what about hummus?" Because hummus is awesome too but not THAT awesome.

  • Why do people invent complicated "rules" of vegetarianism/veganism?

"Vegetarians don't eat anything that moves."

"Vegetarians don't eat beef or pork or chicken or turkey or fish or shrimp or lobster or..."

"Vegetarians don't eat anything from a farm."

"Vegetarians don't eat anything with legs."

"Vegetarians don't eat anything with a face."

What's so complicated about vegetarianism that makes people invent their own crazy definitions of it? Is "vegetarians don't eat animals" really so hard to understand?
