  • I want to go on combination mule deer / elk hunt?

I've looked online but the various states have lots of confusing regulations. There are a group of 6 of us, so I want to apply as a party. I am looking for a place where we can all get tags and have a reasonable chance of getting opportunities on deer and elk. I prefer mule deer, but whitetail would be ok, in a perfect world it would be an elk tag with a tag good for either mulies or whitetail. It looks like I can apply for a combo tag in Montana for just under $900, if I am reading the regs correctly, they are freeing up 5500 outfitter sponsored tags and making them general non-resident tags next year. Anybody know anything about these tags? I also checked out Utah, they have a northern unit general deer/elk tag, but I read on some forums that there really aren't many places where you can hunt both at the same time, and most of the deer habitat seems to be on private property or management units that are off-limits on that tag. I know a lot of these states have deadlines as early as January so I want to get started ASAP. The main considerations are: Ability to get tags, ability to hunt both animals at the same time, reasonable chance of some success. Anyone have any ideas?

  • Who will put a stove jack in a canvas tent?

I got a super deal on a bunch of TREK 9x12 canvas tents, they will make great elk hunting tents but they don't have stove jacks in them. Do you know of anyone who installs them? I am in Sacramento.

  • What's in your daypack?

I have a backpack that I carry when I'm planning on being out all day that has a lightweight fleece sleeping bag, dry socks, a couple of MRE's, a space blanket, lightweight raingear, spare binoculars, a water filtering bottle, etc. But what is in the smaller pack that you take even to push a 100 yard stand of brush? Mountain man asked earlier about a broken stock, and several people said they didn't carry duct tape and such with them. It got me wondering if people still go out into the woods without any survival gear at all.

So, what do you carry everywhere you go in the woods? My small pack has duct tape wrapped flat around a 2x3 piece of cardboard, a pencil wrapped with mono, a pill bottle with vaseline soaked cotton balls, another pill bottle with fish hooks, a needle, waterproof strike anywhere matches, iodine tablets and ibuprofen. A spare knife, a bic lighter, a mirror, a couple of extra rounds, a few bandages, a small bottle of gorilla glue, a compass, a wind up flashlight, a very thin tarp, wet-naps from KFC, alcohol pads, 2 'hothands', a boresnake, a black plastic garbage bag, a few tea bags, 2 salt packets, 2 ketchup packets, and a couple of granola bars. The whole bag probably weighs less than 2 pounds, and fits on my belt opposite my holster.

  • Am I out of touch with reality?

$300 for a Ruger Mark III, come on, I just went and checked and there's one for $219.99 at the gun store, 10 minutes ago.

    $350 for a used Fox B 20 gauge S x S

    $300 for a 10/22

    $300-350 for an 870, or Mossberg 500

Are you guys really paying these prices? If so, let me know what you want and I'll buy it for you and make a few bucks.

And another thing, do you REALLY think it is appropriate to recommend a .243 to a beginner for deer? Do you like seeing crippled deer? A .243 is plenty of gun IN THE RIGHT HANDS, but not in the hands of a first time hunter. My uncle uses a 22-250 for deer, but he's the best shot I've ever seen, should I recommend that as a good deer round for kids?

  • What is the difference between a 96-98 and 99-00 Civic?

I need a new core support for a 2000 Civic, and I found a new 1 on Craigslist for $20, but it's for a 1996. They run well over $100 with shipping on ebay. I know the part # is different for the radiator support, but can anyone tell me what the difference actually is? Is it something I can modify to make it work? A little cutting and welding is no problem.

  • Removing paint from a gun?

I just got a model 70 cheaply because somebody put a horrible homemade camo paint job on it. I took off the laminate stock and got a nice wooden one for it, but the action, barrel and scope still have the hideous paint on them. Does anyone know an easy way to remove the paint without damaging the blueing, or the gloss paint on the barrel?

  • Reloading questions?

I want to start reloading my own ammo and I have no idea where to start. I don't care about speed, I will be doing this primarily to relax and get some time to myself in my shop. Besides dies for each caliber, does this kit have everything I need to get started?

Also, I have a shotgun reloader that someone gave me, it's a MEC Jr. 600, can someone explain how to reload shotgun shells with this reloader while keeping in mind that I have no idea what each part of the reloader is called, or really what I'm doing, at all? It didn't come with instructions. Thanks
