5 AnswersDogs1 decade agoI have a 18 m. old Border Collie keeps having paw problems?
He runs agility (just in training 1x week), Soccer on grass/concrete 2x daily and frisbee (on grass) and he swims daily, he wears down his nails till they bleed and/or splits the nails, the agility obstacles (like the table) have a rough texture and he digs in on his toes. I have had to wash the contacts at training sometimes for the blood spots and around the pool as he runs around and jumps in... He doesn't seem to care he is so driven.
After a $250 at the vet this time for two split nails, this one I couldn't get the bleeding to stop and it was very bloody...I am thinking boots for Agility but don't see others in trials with this...how are others dealing with this? His nails are very very short, I couldn't think of trying to go even shorter...any suggestions on the best booties or ???
and I live in a warm climate so breathable booties?
4 AnswersDogs1 decade agoWell socialized from puppyhood till to 1yr. old border collie still has leash aggression, and getting worse?
Starting at 8wks old this dog has been so socialized in classes multi-dog family, dog parks, play dates, but at eight weeks displayed if I didn't allow him to go up to a dog to greet he would act out, as soon as he was off leash he would be submissive & playful, now 1yr old he has been in obedience classes non-stop, agility and work with him almost daily on socialization, trainer is saying be more stern, been using pinch collar to correct, now add people to the list of aggressions, he will sit & stay perfect very close to a dog, when I come back to pick up leash lunge at that very dog, and he earlier played with off leash and last night bit me as I tried to hold him back from a lunge in class, I am so frustrated, Trainer says for me to be more stronger/harsh but I am correcting with all my strength with the pinch collar, while it makes the dog mad he will not stop, any insight ? Tried distraction and he will look at me but go back to a lunge. He is not trying to dominate me and note at the park off leash he obeys like an angel. happy to have anyone throw a frisbee and if happy if another dog wants to take the frisbee or ball will just run along with them.
7 AnswersDogs1 decade agoBorder Collie, standing in line at agility will try to herd dog at front, when it takes off for its turn, help?
tried standing away from group and coming in when it's our turn and also distracting him when dog at front is about to take off, but still dog will go nuts trying to go get the dog...trainer says to be more aggressive, and I tried that and with pinch collar and dog just becomes aggressively nuts, ran out of ideas, food is really irrelevant to him.
Any ideas? I would appreciate it
