Advice for a Christmas Palm (Veitchia Merrillii) in California?
I just purchased this tree and I cannot wait to plant it. However, I am getting mixed reviews on how well they do outdoors in California (Zone 10) and if they need full sun all the time, or do well in partial shade. Any advice on how to make sure my palm lasts as long as possible and grows healthy? I really appreciate it.
Garden & Landscape12 months agoBest flooring for hot outdoor patio?
I live in California, where my patio is in direct sunlight year-round. I currently have concrete which doesn't get too hot under my feet, but I want to make the flooring really nice with a tile of some sort.
I've tried porcelain and slate; both get impossibly hot in the sun.. I don't like the look or options for travertine, and ripping up the concrete to put in new, tile-stenciled concrete isn't an option. What material can I look at that doesn't absorb so much heat in 80-100 degree weather? (My dog lays out on the patio most of the day)
3 AnswersDecorating & Remodeling1 year agoHow many years of Management Experience should be on a resume?
I have been a manager for 2 years at my company, and I am considering moving to a new city soon. I am just curious how many years of management experience shows a strong background for new manager roles? (FYI, this is the only management experience on my resume).
8 AnswersOther - Careers & Employment2 years agoHomeowners Insurace? Amica vs. Lemonade?
I am purchasing my first condo and I am looking into Homeowners Insurance now. I have found Lemonade and Amica as my top two choices mainly because the customer service and reputation of Amica is so nationally agreed upon it seems, and Lemonade has excellent reviews and great rates, as well.
I wanted advice on either of these two insurances.. obviously cost is a concern, but I'm curious which one is better in your opinion (whatever that means to you). Thanks!
2 AnswersRenting & Real Estate2 years agoWhat are these Nevada mountains called?
I have been searching and searching for the name these mountains go by, and when I Google La Madre Mountains and Red Rock Canyon (which seems to be the peaks next to these), I can never find good photos of the side I want.
I see the mountains in Summerlin, NV, and am looking to get a great photo of these to frame. Any ideas of where to find a professional photo of these peaks?
3 AnswersEarth Sciences & Geology4 years agoBuying property out of state?
I have a plan to buy a house in Las Vegas next year, but I live in California. I would want to use the house as a rental while I am not there, but I am also a first-time home buyer. I understand lenders will likely turn away from a first time homeowner if I don't intend on actually living in the house full time, but I am sure it is possible.
I do not intend on relocating there, but I do visit often enough where having a house out there would be worth the investment.
Anyone know if this is a doable plan? I am new to all of this, so any advice would be appreciated. Thank you!
6 AnswersRenting & Real Estate4 years agoNoisy chewing co-worker who can't be corrected?
She eats about 17 snacks a day and 2 meals at her desk which touches my desk. I have asked her numerous times very politely to be more mindful of how she is chewing, and she accuses me of being too sensitive and becomes pissed at me for being annoyed...? I have no idea how to handle it anymore, and I can't change where I'm sitting.
8 AnswersEtiquette4 years agoLessening the traffic infraction amount in court?
Yesterday I was pulled over for failure to stop at a stop sign at an empty residential intersection. I roll-stopped at about 1-2 miles an hour. The cop was super cool and said it's his responsibility to cite me given it was afternoon time on a Saturday in a neighborhood.
I just looked online for what it will cost, and it is near $300!!! Is there a way to lessen this ridiculous amount for this minor infraction? How do I do it?? That's insane. (I live in CA if that's important)

6 AnswersLaw & Ethics4 years agoIs there any way out of a minor traffic infraction (CA)?
I made a roll stop at a stop sign today and received a citation for an infraction.. From the little information I ve found, this ticket will be near or exceed $300!!! I can t swallow that amount at all, as that s practically what I get paid in a week and more than a 3rd of my rent. Is there any way out of paying this? I won t win pleaing no contest.
6 AnswersLaw & Ethics4 years agoManager said I'll get paid for an 8 hour day, but I didn't?
Saturday morning comes around and I get a call asking if I would mind coming in for about 2 hours to work on something and told me I would get paid for a full 8 hour day.
The thing is, I am hourly, and know I only get paid for the time that I'm clocked in for, and I don't think she knows that... when I get my next paycheck, can I bring it to the boss and say I was supposed to get paid for an 8 hour day as my manager stated? Or else I would not have come in on my 1 day off for $25...
5 AnswersLaw & Ethics4 years agoAria or Mirage Buffet - Vegas?
I have been doing some research on the buffets on the strip and I have narrowed it down to 2: Aria's dinner buffet, or Cravings at The Mirage (dinner). However, the reviews on both are either raving or bashing.. any personal opinions?
NOTE: I don't eat seafood in case that's the reason why Aria's is rated so much higher. A great prime rib and/or bbq ribs would win me over
3 AnswersLas Vegas5 years agoHow can tenants fight rent increase together?
Yesterday I received a notice stating that my rent will be increased by $50 a month ($600 more a year), and I saw one of my other neighbors has also received an increase notice. I can't stand it, and I want to protest this.
I live in a 6-unit building, so there's few of us here, all of which (besides me) have been living here for years. I am going on year 2.
How do I do this? What do I do to band the building together to "protest" this increase? None of us would actually move out and I don't think the landlord would care tbh, so is a petition a way to go? Phone calls?
Renting & Real Estate5 years agoFeeling like life cannot get back on track?
I am 28 and worlds away (in a positive way) from where I was a few years ago in terms of how the standard of "successful" is defined. However, I feel like I am so far behind in a way. I haven t dated in God knows how long, I will never be able to retire with the job/pay I have, and I am still unbelievably unfocused on what I want out of life.
I DO have an ok job in the crappy job market of Los Angeles, I am healthy, and have plenty leftover every month after rent and bills. For some reason, I am still not completely happy and I don t know what to do. I don t know what career path i want, and I haven t been creative in probably 6 years because of how expensive it is to pursue and how it feels like there s no value to those projects...
any advice when you feel off track like this?
3 AnswersMental Health5 years agoCan I rush a GIARDIA test?
My brother's dog tested positive for giardia about a month ago, did his 7 day meds, and hasn't had much if any symptoms since. They failed the get the follow up test done in time for my dog to be staying with them, so I was wondering if it's at all possible to bring the stool sample to the vet and get a rushed test (ideally the same day). Advice??
1 AnswerDogs5 years agoHow to speak up at work to get the experience I signed up for?
I have been at my current job for 4 months, and when I first started, I was assigned to a manager with the types of projects that were amazing, really motivating, and growth-enabling. 2 weeks in, a new person starts, so I was pushed onto a manager who has no projects like that and only runs logistics of the property we work on. A bunch of new projects have come in, and of course, my manager and I got nothing besides 1 of them with a terrible, jerk-filled team (these words coming from my boss), and will only work on weekends (giving me the weekend shift every week).
I am known in my office for my patience and positive attitude, but I want my bosses to know I am unhappy and want to be challenged in a way I can grow from. This set up I have now, although I have been doing it for 3 months, is somewhat left field, and I have been told several times that things won't change until next year. I waited a long time and have worked really hard to get to where I am, but I really don't think I want to waste another year doing something that means nothing. Nothing will change if I voice my concern in the near future, but I want to speak up.. how should I go about this without being pegged as a complainer or making things awkward?
2 AnswersOther - Careers & Employment5 years agoFemale coworker being verbally abusive?
Ok, not abusive, but certainly a ***** sometimes. I work in an office of 13 including me, and she sometimes speaks to others like their 4 years old and calls everybody "special" (meaning stupid and incompetent). She called me a dumbas$ today which really pissed me off. This is totally a gender issue because obviously I need to just sit back and let her treat the new guy and me like this seeing as it would cause a severe stir if I said it right back to her, being a guy.
Not sure what I can do about this instead of just sit back and let it happen because she's a girl.
2 AnswersSingles & Dating5 years agoGroomsmen in different states; TUX RENTALS??
My brother and I live in California, but the other groomsmen for his wedding in June live in Illinois and Georgia. In order for all of us to get the same tuxes, do I have to pick a national chain like Men's Warehouse? I've just heard they are pretty expensive, but I honestly don't know of any other big chains. What else is out there??? Thanks!
6 AnswersWeddings5 years agoHow to respond when new boss asks if I like my job?
I just started a great job a couple weeks ago and loved it. Today, I was assigned a different manager to assist for the next year or so, and I absolutely hate it: my duties, this manager, and anything really that deals with this new department. I knew what this department entailed before I started, so that s why I know it is not going to grow on me. I am very unhappy, and I know I can t really tell my new manager that.
Tomorrow we are going on a run to handle one of the department s issues, and I know I will be asked how am I liking the job so far.. I LOVED it to death up until this week because of this change, and now I am dreading going into work every day instead of being pumped and excited with my previous assigned department. How do I handle this question?
1 AnswerOther - Careers & Employment5 years agoIs it possible to go kayaking in South Lake Tahoe in March?
I am planning a trip to South Lake Tahoe this March, and one of the main activities I want to go there is to kayak (yes, in a dive/surf/body suit). However, I can only seem to find a couple kayaking rental companies up there, and neither of them offer kayaking for that month. Is it even possible to kayak that time of year without bringing your own gear?
