  • Using Media Center and XBOX 360 as Comcast (HD?) DVR?

I currently have a PC running Windows 7 Ultimate, a USB TV tuner card (NTSC decoder), and an XBOX 360 that can be used as a Media Center Extender.

I will soon be signing up for Comcast cable and a DVR is a must-have. However, Comcast charges a monthly fee for its "DVR Service" and an additional monthly fee to rent the actual DVR hardware. My question is: can I bypass both of those fees by using my PC as a DVR? (Or just the rental fee?)

I understand that the TV tuner card will most likely only be able to receive the basic/local channels if I just plug it into the wall. Therefore, I think I will have to use the set-top box provided by Comcast and attach to TV tuner card to THAT instead. Can I buy an IR blaster that will allow my computer to control the set-top box automatically? Then, I'll use my XBOX as a Media Center extender and control everything through the XBOX. (I don't want to have to even touch the computer.)

Will this work? Does anyone have experience with this? What about HD content? Can the HD content be sent from the set-top box to the TV tuner card in composite (yellow RCA), S-Video, or NTSC (coax) format?

What about other options like DishNetwork or DirecTV?
