Would it be logically sound to replace Euclid's 4th Right Angle Axiom with the axiom "All straight angles are equal."?
I'm thinking what is the difference between saying two different pairs of right angles are equal and two different straight angles are equal. If the straight angles are equal then why won't the derived right angles be equal?
2 AnswersMathematics1 year agoShould people not be calling 1/x the “inverse of x” but the “reciprocal of x”?
People use the "inverse" term to refer to the "reverse" of functions.
First, using this definition would not “inverse of x” actually mean x?
Second, if that’s true, are people being intellectually “lazy” when they say "the inverse of x" when they actually mean the "reciprocal” of x?
Thirdly, if that’s also true, then should we also not be saying “the inverse squared law” because that actually means x^(1/2)?
I would greatly appreciate clarification and possible affirmation on this issue.
Thanks in advance.

4 AnswersMathematics1 decade agoComparing Euclid's first and second axioms?
Here is Euclid's first and second axiom.
1. Let the following be postulated: to draw a straight line from any point to any point.
2. To produce [extend] a finite straight line continuously in a straight line.
Why doesn't axiom 2 follow from axiom 1.
A finite straight line ends with two points. According to axiom 1 those two points define a unique straight line. Why do you need axiom 2 to tell you that, why can't you just assume it.
If my question is not clear let me know.

We haven't been getting strawberries like we used to. We are getting some new plants and were wondering whether we should just replace them all.

I think the lawn mower was not winterised. I've narrored it down to the fact that the gas tank seems to no longer be vented. When the cap is not tight it runs fine. There is no vent in the cap or above the gas line level. Do they have some new way of venting gas tanks for enviromental reasons or something.

1 AnswerBirds1 decade agoMaximum Bets at casino craps table?
When they say the maximum bet is say $5000, would I be able to, for example, put it all on a single roll for boxcars. Or does $5000 refer to the total of several simultaneous bets and there may be a limit to the amount you can put on one of those single rolls.
2 AnswersGambling1 decade agoTranslate a couple German phrases?
A guy in a forum used a couple of German phrases and I need (want) to know what he said. Could you help me. (The two of us are no longer on talking terms.)
First he said "So it is most important to always remember one thing: Kleine Brötchen backen!" I Googled the phase and got.."to eat humble pie", it that accurate. because later he wrote...
"Kleine Brötchen backen": Don't carry something too far.
"Den Ball flach halten" can also explain what I want.
What does "Den Ball flach halten" mean.
Thanks

1 AnswerOther - Internet1 decade agoQuantum Mechanics question concerning Schrödinger’s cat…?
Concerning Schrödinger’s cat…
On what grounds do physicist reject, out of hand, the idea that the cat is neither dead NOR alive” but don’t reject out of hand the idea that the electron is neither spinning up nor spinning down.
I’m not asking about the different theories involving the “collapse of the way function” I’ve got some books that discuss that.
I’m asking why are they willing to accept that the state of a electron can be undetermined but not the state of a cat that is in total isolation from the rest of the universe.
After all, the cat is simply a biological machine.
