I am the Mother of two beautiful girls, 18 and 9 years old. I am a cancer survivor, living in Georgia. I grew up on a dairy farm in Michigan, spent 7 years in the military, and now I am the Office Manager at a propane company, so my girls call me "Queen of the Hill." I love the outdoors, and often do things like going hiking, since it is something that is fun and can do for free!
Divorced and paying my bills; need help.?
Basically, I got screwed in my divorce... he got everything, and I got the dog and the bills. Now, I still can barely afford groceries... Because I pay my child-support and my bills first. I consider my financial obligations to be important, and because of that, I don't qualify for any help with food stamps, medical, energy assistance.... Apparently, I make too much money. More than 1/2 my paycheck goes to my kids every month, tho! I tried to get a lawyer, but I live in a different state, and can't afford one, let alone the time off (or the travel costs) associated with fighting for my own rights. Are there any places that can actually help people in my situation? I try to do right by paying for bills, and can't afford to actually live. If I didn't have a boyfriend, I'd be living on the streets, because I can't afford rent or anything else necessary to just survive.
By the way, I live in Georgia, just north of Atlanta, if that matters. I'm just looking for some help with food or gas money, or even some clothes to wear to work. Mine were "new" several years ago, when I bought them from Goodwill. I can't even afford to shop at WalMart for a new shirt right now.
There are people out there that literally REFUSE to work for a living, and they're rewarded by our system because the government cuts them a check each month. I don't think it's a lot, but a lot of those people could do something to try to support themselves. I am doing that, and can still barely make ends meet. Because I'm actually trying, I don't qualify for any help.
Anyone have suggestions?

2 AnswersLaw & Ethics1 decade agoFavorite home-made candy recipe for the Holidays?
Let's share some recipes! I love making Candied Walnuts:
1 cup sugar
1 tsp vanilla
1/2 - 1 tsp cinnamon
1/4 tsp salt
6 tbsp milk
5-6 cups walnuts, halves
Put sugar, vanilla, cinnamon, salt and milk in a sauce pan and bring to a boil. Reduce heat slightly and continue to stir at a low boil for 1 minute.
Place walnuts in a large bowl. Slowly pour sugar mixture over the nuts. Stir until the walnuts are completely covered and mixture begins to "sugar".
Place on a sheet of wax paper and allow to dry and harden fully. If stored in an air-tight container, the walnuts should last a good long while.
What is yours?
3 AnswersCooking & Recipes1 decade agoWhy would NASA lie about life on the moon?
There are so many "conspiracy theorists" out there that say NASA lies about what is or is not on the moon. They even say NASA lies about saying we actually walked on the moon.
I can see NASA saying we walked there first, to beat the other countries, I guess... But why lie, saying that there was never life there, yet other people swear there was. One question posted a pic, saying it was a piece of wood. I looked at the pic, and it could be a piece of wood, or it could be layers of rock sticking out of the ground.
Basically, WHY would NASA lie about whether there was or was not life on the Moon? I don't see any reason for it.

This is basically an opportunity to get a new start on life! I'm looking forward to it, but I'd like to learn more about the area!
What is there to do there? How is the economy looking in that area? Any other useful information that would be helpful in moving to a new area is appreciated!
Thanks in advance!!

2 AnswersPregnancy1 decade agoHow do I explain this to my kids?
I left my husband about a year ago, and the divorce was final in February.
Because of economical reasons, I am moving 6 hours away (drive time)in a couple of weeks. My older daughter is a teenager, so she's more understanding.
My younger daughter is 7, and will not take this news well at all! How can I help break the news to her easier and help her understand why I have to go? She will still be able to visit on school holidays and long weekends. It's an inexpensive, quick flight! She just won't see me as often as she used to.
Help! I don't want to break her heart, and seeing her in pain kills me!!!
11 AnswersParenting1 decade agoI need some Christmas ideas?!?
I am SO broke this year (got paid today, and already don't have any money!), but I have 2 daughters. I want to do something fun and memorable, that won't cost much. Maybe start a new tradition, since their Dad and I divorced this year... just something new, that would be even better than spending tons of money on gifts. I will still get them each a stocking full of goodies, but the idea is that I won't spend much. I need some ideas, tho!
6 AnswersChristmas1 decade agoMedical Insurance question?
Alright, I'm in a bit of a bind, and completely confused. As far as medical insurance goes, I went from my parent's to the military, and then to being a military dependent. In February, I got a divorce, and have been struggling with medical ever since. I will give a bit of a history, and maybe someone could give me some input!
I had breast cancer, but was diagnosed Cancer Free in January 2008. Because of that, I still have check ups every few months, along with having my port catheter flushed very 6 weeks. The only surgery that I have left (that I know of) is having the port removed from my chest.
That being said, I only make about $9/hr, along working as a bartender on the weekends. I have had to pay my ex $500/month in child support. Please don't start a discussion on the ins and outs of my divorce settlement. That is NOT why I am posting this.
I need someone to basically explain how Medical insurance works (hmo, ppo, etc) and what type of coverage would be best for me... low income, with a need to see the doctor on a regular basis, covering mammograms and other tests, and good prescription coverage...
Is there any type of government help I'd qualify for? I wouldn't know where to begin.

3 AnswersDiet & Fitness1 decade agoNeed legal advice... ?
This is probably going to get a little long... I'll try to keep it as simple as possible.
Basically, I got a divorce in February from a man I was with for 13 years. He supported us, so I never had any "real" jobs... just bartending, etc. What I made was just for extra spending cash. When I left him (long story, but I had good reason), I just wanted OUT and he got EVERYTHING! I didn't have a lawyer, and no money for one, and had no idea where to go for help or advice.
So basically, I make about $200 a week at one job and about $300 a week at another... just trying to make ends meet (and still not doing a good job of it).
He has custody of our 2 children and I'm paying him $500/month, even though he makes over $50,000 a year. I don't mind paying money for my children, because I firmly believe that they deserve the best, no matter what. But at the cost of my not being able to buy groceries for myself and working 80+ hours a week for very little pay? They're going to shut off my electricity in a few days because I haven't been able to pay it in 3 months! Rent is coming due, and I only have about $300 saved up towards the $777 that I owe, after I pay my child support! I can't even afford gas in my car to drive to see my kids!
Is there something that I can do to get the custody situation readjusted to better suit my income? (I'd love to have custody of my girls, but definately can't afford a custody battle with him.)
I'm open to suggestions and advice of any agencies I can get in contact with to help me. I'm desparate at this point, because in my apartments, if your electric is shut off, you have 3 days to get it turned back on before they give you an eviction notice. Then where will I go? I'll be living out of my car in a parking lot somewhere!
