I have 32 years experience with firearms and the outdoors in Montana. Guns are my top hobby. I enjoy fishing, hiking, hunting, and paintballing as well.

  • Which would you choose between these milsurps?

I have found a buyer for my Remington xr100 in 204 Ruger (very nice little rifle) and plan on buying yet another milsurp for my collection. I have limited it to three choices. I'm leaning toward the Romanian PSL. I worry that being a ak variant, it may be listed if a awb comes across the line. I love the cheap ammo (7.62x54 light ball) and the fact that it has a scope mount. I know that the barrel heats up quick, but I'm ok with that (I'm not going to mow the yard with it). Second choice is the Hakim. I'm not sure why I'm drawn to the Hakim, but they intrigue me. Last choice, M1 Garand. I will buy a Garand, but personally I'm not worried too much about prices spiking in the next year. Plus, the M1 is not likely to make any potential ban. Plus surplus 30-06 ammo is more expensive and tougher to find than 7.62x54. I will order a Garand in about a year when I sell my house if I don't purchase one now. All three three have powerful cartridges, and I'm sure I would love any of the three. Which would you choose and why. Do you have any experience with any of the three? Please help me make up my mind.

  • Why do you own firearms?

I'm always amazed by how many people are criticized for wanting a 44 mag in Y/A because it's too big for self defense, even though they never mentioned in their question anything about self defense. Maybe they want it for hunting, or collecting, or just to have. I own several firearms. Some for hunting (gotta love that Browning 338 win mag, not to mention too many others to list), some target rifles (220 swift that'll shoot through the same hole all day, among others), a few hand-me-downs from relatives (these are special guns to me that I would never let go), some just for the heck of it (my 416 rigby comes to mind), a few milsurps (the beginning of an ever increasing collection) and even a handgun I conned my wife into buying me instead of a wedding ring (Ruger Super Redhawk 454 Casull in case you are wondering). I have never bought a gun with the intention of having to use it to defend my family, but I have a few that could be pressed into service if the need arose (12 gauge Benelli Nova and a Springfield XD40 Tactical come to mind). So my question to you, why do you own firearms? Is it a collecting thing, hunting, defense, plinking, target shooting, just because it is your right, or any other reason (like we really need a reason).

  • What is your favorite milsurp rifle?

Ok, this one is just for fun. What milsurps do you own, which is your favorite, and why? You must own more than one to have a legitimate opinion. What will be your next purchase. I own 3: Swiss k31, Yugo m48, and Mosin Nagant 91/30. My favorite is the Yugo, accurate as heck, fun to shoot. My wife loves the k31, but the stock is a little short for me. Plus it likes to spit the brass in your face if you lower the gun from your shoulder to work the action (I know you are supposed to work it on your shoulder, but if you don't, watch your eyes and teeth). She can shoot about 3/4" groups with the open sights (no wonder she likes it). The mosin is fun, but not as refined as the Yugo. I don't like the shape of the stock, but it shoots very well. My next purchase, I hope will be the Yugo sks, just because I don't have a shtf gun yet. I would also like to order a cz82. I would love a Garand, but they are a little pricey for me right now. Still waiting for my c&r ffl application. If you know anyone at the atf, tell them to quit dragging their feet.

  • has any one here ever built a browning 1919?

I've been seeing lots of the kits for sale. You need to buy a side plate to build one semi auto. Just out of curiosity, has anyone done it. How complicated was it. What was the hardest part of the build. Would you do it over again. They aren't very practical for anything, but they would draw some attention at the range. I know this has nothing to do with hunting, but the hunting section seems to be a catch all for firearms questions. I have no intentions of ever building one, just curious.

  • How do I remove the bolt on a Winchester 67a.?

It is a little single shot 22 with the pull back plunger/hammer on the back. My 65 year old father got it on his 8th birthday. He gave it to me when I turned 6. I have a 5 year old son that is really looking forward to the day that it becomes his. The problem is no one knows how to remove the bolt. I have tried holding the trigger. I can't seem to find a release anywhere. Any thoughts? We've always kept it cleaned and oiled as best we can with the bolt in it. My son and I were out shooting this weekend, and when I was cleaning guns after getting back, I thought maybe one of you would have an idea. Thanks for any answers and help.

  • m1 garand or springfield m1a?

Funds are a little short right now, so I don't have immediate plans for either one, but I will be selling my home in 12 long months and plan on purchasing both a m1a and at least one m1 garand (can't beat the cmp). So which do you feel is the better rifle and why? I love the history and caliber of the garand, but the m1a has detachable mags with a little more firepower. Don't try to peddle your plastic poodle shooters here. No AR for me!!!

  • Question about ffl03 c&r?

I applied online over two weeks ago for the application. How long are the forms supposed to take to get here? How long does it take to get the license after I send in the forms? Should I reapply, maybe by phone? One guy I know said his license took over 5 months to get after he sent in his forms. Just getting impatient and looking for advice.

  • Importation ban on firearms?

I know this question has probably been asked a hundred times, but I am waiting for my c&r ffl, and I was recently told that our beloved president banned the import of milsurps into the country. I was under the impression that he had tried, but the import ban had been overturned. Seems crazy that he would try to ban the import of mausers or nagants. Can't imagine they are on the top of a criminal's wishlist. I just wish gun laws had to make sense before they could be passed. Any info on this import ban would be appreciated.

  • C&R ffl03 holders only?

I recently requested my packet from the atf. I have been bitten pretty hard by the milsurp bug. What are some good sites to order C&R guns from? I am looking for any advice or recommendations you guys have. J&G, Century, Samco are they any good, or have you had bad experiences with any of them. What are the good sites I haven't found yet. Also, have any of you bought the Steyr m95 carbines. Do you like it. That'll probably be my first purchase on my ffl. That or another k31, or a vz24, or a cz82, or maybe a k98. Good thing it will take a few weeks to get the paper work straightened out, it'll give me a chance to make up my mind. I'm counting on you DJ, don't let me down.

  • Help, I've got the milsurp bug?

I just bought a Yugo M48 Mauser. Anything special I should know about these. The stock and bluing are great, but it did have a little pitting in the bore under a ton of cosmoline. Hopefully it will shoot ok. The numbers match on the bolt and receiver. The stock and floorplate have matching numbers as well, but different from the bolt and receiver. Is this normal? What kind of accuracy do you guys get with your M48's? I've heard they shoot about the best of all the Mausers, probably won't hold a candle to my K31, though. What is the cure for the milsurp bug. I was feeling out the paper work on the Mauser, and I was still eye balling a half a dozen other milsurps on the rack. Is there a cure for this addiction (I think a M1 Garand might cure it, but my wife's not so sure)?

  • Transferring games from wii to wii.?

I have downloaded several games onto my wii. I have saved them onto a sd card. Is it possible to upload these games onto a different wii. We tried, and we just got a warning that the games could only be played on the wii that was used to purchase them. Is there anyway around this.

  • Does anyone own a Ruger Mini 14 Target?

I am playing around with the idea of trading off my Remington xr100 in 204 Ruger for a Ruger mini 14 target rifle. Does anyone have any actual experience with one. Does it have the same level of reliability that the mini 14 is famous for, or did they tighten the chamber and lose some of that. What kind of groups are you getting. Is it true that they like the 60-69 grain bullets the best (I know that will vary depending on the rifle, but what's your experience.) Any thoughts or advice.

  • Ok lets hear your best story regarding m1 thumb.?

I've never owned a m1, but I've seen pictures of the mashed thumbs. I've even heard of it happening with sks's and even the occasional mini. Well, make me laugh for 10 points.

  • what do you consider must have milsurps?

I own several guns (my wife might even say several too many), but recently got my first milsurp. It is a walnut stocked swiss k31 that is just gorgeous and shoots like a dream, made in 1942, all numbers match. So my question is, what do you consider must have milsurps. I'm thinking an m1 garand, a mosin nagant (simply because of the price), maybe a springfield 1903, you gotta love the swiss k31, and maybe even the steyr 1895. What am I missing. What do you think of my list.

  • serial numbers on guns?

I have heard repeatedly not to post a full serial number of a gun publicly. Why is that. What could it possibly be used for.

  • Have you seen this yet?

Now tell me that isn't the neatest 10/22 kit you've ever seen. Wish I'd seen this before I shelled out $900 on the piece of crap that Kahr is selling for a Tommy gun.

  • Eat your hearts out............?

Ok, this is not so much a question as just an opportunity to brag. Today I got a Swiss k31 in 7.5x55 swiss. Its got a very nice walnut stock, all numbers match, the bluing is great, and the bore is in a class by itself. I've been looking for a k31 for about a year now, and well, you nagant lovers can keep your russians (I know the nagants are good guns too, and I'll probably end up grabbing one of those too, but they are no swiss). Does anyone have any experience with these? Any advice or pointers would be appreciated. I had hoped to scope and bipod it, but I almost hate to do that to this quality of surplus gun. I have seen the no drill scope mounts, but I don't know if I'll do that or not. Can I find a spare magazine?

  • Why does everyone hate the desert eagles?

I know they aren't for everyone, but my brother just bought one in the 50 ae. It is a very nice gun. It is expensive, heavy, and a poor choice for self defense, but it seems to work perfectly for what he wanted. His has not had a jam yet, and most problems can be tied back to improper stance, or a bad mag. Any pistol can jam if it is limp wristed, it just happens more easily with a 50 ae because of the heavy springs. He bought the desert eagle because he wanted a big bore handgun for protection against bears when hiking and maybe even deer hunting, and he personally doesn't like revolvers. Me, I love my Super Redhawk 454 Casull, but I do have to admit that Desert Eagle is a very nice pistol. Not to mention it is much easier to shoot than my 454 Casull. It does not kick near as much as I had expected; it is much more pleasant than my 454. So why do people rag on those hand cannons. Like I said, they aren't for everyone, but they do have their place.

  • problems with new kahr tommy gun?

Last November my wife bought me a auto ordnance 1927a1 deluxe (the new kahr semi auto tommy gun). It jammed about every third round. It was the first time I've ever returned a gun to a manufacturer for warranty work. Maybe I'm just lucky. Anyways, they returned it about six weeks later, with a new mag; they said the first one was defective. Ok, next trip to the range, it shot one mag just fine, but then next time, the mag kept coming unlatched, resulting in a jam, nearly every shot. It shoots great with the drum mag, which locks into the gun differently. It will work with the stick mag if I use my thumb to put pressure on the magazine release to keep the mag from releasing. I'm not stupid, and have shot and owned several semi auto's. This is definitely a manufacturing defect, not ammo problem (shooting 230 grain hardball from several manufactures to rule out ammo), and the gun is meticulously cleaned and oiled, and I've tried a few different mags. So, I sent it back to the company again. I've got my fingers crossed, but my question is what are my options. If the gun is returned and still doesn't work right, what are my options. I know there is a guy in colorado that speciallizes in getting the new tommy's to run right, but I paid $900 for the gun, and I hate to pay several hundred more just to get it to work. Has anyone else had problems with these guns. I know that I've read several reviews online from people that are having the same problems I'm having. I'm just looking for advice on the best way to go forward from here.

  • What's the best deer rifle?

Let me see if I understand this. This question gets asked about three times every day. About 13 people recommend the 270. About 13 recommend the 30-06 (incidently all 13 get 13 thumbs down from the 270 fans). 5 recommend the 308, 7mm08, or 260. 3 say you're stupid if you ever shoot anything bigger than a 243. 1 says he would only use a 17 hmr. And some 8 year old kid swears he killed one with an airsoft. Oh, almost forgot the wiseguy that recommends the 50 bmg. Did I forget anyone? I just get really sick of seeing the same question posted every 5 questions. Any thoughts?
