Searching for name of Vietnam veteran movie?
I'm looking for a movie.
The main character is a black guy, but I don't THINK it was played by Morgan Freeman or Samuel L. Jackson. It wasn't Denzel Washington or Will Smith or Forest Whittaker or Laurence Fishburne.
The main character is a Vietnam veteran living in the middle of nowhere, and he's visited kind of randomly by an old friend (who I believe is white; he was a very minor character), and his young (9-12-ish) Amerasian daughter. The father leaves (I think he was dying of cancer if memory serves), leaving the main character to raise the kid (who he didn't want around in the first place).
I believe it takes place in California, and there are a lot of other veterans in the area living a kind of survivalist life, who don't talk to anyone at all if they can avoid it.
One of the others is a (definitely white) completely crazy dude who was struck non-verbal after the war.
For some reason which I've since forgotten, they're all out in the woods and there's some confusion, and the crazy white dude shoots (and kills) the little girl.
Does anyone know what movie this was?
