  • External Hard Drive Data Not Viewable On My Mac?

I'm a bit new to Macs, but I have a Macbook Pro and a 500 GB external hard drive. I originally got the hard drive when I had my windows laptop, and most of the data was put on the hard drive using that laptop.

The file system is NTFS - I also have another external hard drive with a FAT32 file system that I can read without any problems.

At first I was able to view the data with no problem, but not write to the hard drive. Then I installed 'NTFS for Mac' and I was able to read and write to the hard drive with no problem. Then all of a sudden, the data became 'unviewaable' or invisible.

The hard drive still shows up, and I can click on it to open it up. Once I open it, it shows the accurate amount of free space, and I can 'Get Info' and still see the amount of files and free space etc, but I can't see any of the data. On my iMac, all of the information shows up.

I can still write to the hard drive. I created a new folder, and as soon as I created it, it disappeared. When I tried to create another folder with the same name, I couldn't because the other one was already created - so the data is definitely there, I just can't see it.

Does anyone know of anything I can do?

  • 2000 Escalade will not shift from park?

I'm having a lot of trouble shifting from park. Once I've shifted, everything works just fine.

I'll get in the car and start it up, then when I go to shift - it won't.

I'm pressing the brake pedal down as far as it'll go, and I'm pulling on the shifter pretty hard. It almost feels like I'm going to break it.

This is from parking on level ground. I know about using the e-brake on inclines - that isn't the problem. After sitting in the car for a while - sometimes a few seconds, sometimes 20 minutes - it will magically shift with no problem.

Anyone have any ideas? I'd like to try and either fix it myself or get a quick fix that I can use until I can take it to the shop.

  • 2000 Escalade Steering Wheel Wobbling?

I have a 2000 Escalade, and the steering wheel and the whole car wobbles/shakes whenever I'm driving between 40 - 50 mph (lightly) or whenever I'm in a situation where I need to brake hard between 40 - 50 mph (heavy)

I've taken it to make sure the wheels are balanced (2 different shops) and they are. Also, the rotors aren't warped and the brakes are fine (even though the fact that it wobbles while driving means it isn't the brakes).

I've taken it to about 5 places so far, and they all act like they can't figure out what the problem is. Does anyone here have an idea?

  • Left Rear Blinker is Out - 2000 Escalade?

My left (drivers side) blinker is out.

It isn't the bulb or the fuse or the circuit board (inside the tail lamp assembly for anyone unfamiliar with this generation of GM trucks). All other blinkers work. I tested the wires and there isn't any voltage going to the bulb for some reason. The dash indicator light flashes really fast like the bulb is blown.

I know I'm probably going to have to trace wiring to see if there is a short or something somewhere, but I was hoping someone on here could tell me where to look first.

  • Any CCNA people out there?

I'm in the last of 4 classes - NET 226, and I must admit that I'm struggling. I take my final/skills based assessment Monday. We've been given a practice configuration for Packet Tracer, and I'm having a bit of trouble with two of the routers.

There are 3 routers total, each with a switch attached and a PC attached to the switch. One of the switches also has a web server.

Each router is connected with a serial connection. Two have EIGRP enabled with PPP/CHAP on the link between them. Those networks are good.

The router with the web server is the 'ISP' router. It's connected to the middle router serially through Frame Relay.

The networks are good everywhere except for the fact that I cannot ping accross the ISP router (I can ping across the Frame Relay Link) and I cannot get a ping across the router attached to the other side of the Frame Relay link when pinging from the ISP router.

Across the Frame Relay link, all I can do is ping the actual serial interfaces.

    SOMEONE PLEASE HELP!!!

  • I have a 2000 Escalade with 24" Rims - brake and suspension upgrade?

I just put the rims on, and I want to upgrade to better brakes and a stiffer suspension.

So far, for brakes I'm going with drilled and slotted rotors up front with steel lines and ceramic pads. Will that do?

I'd like to convert the rear drums to disc, but without spending 2-3k. Since there's probably no such thing as performance drums, does anyone know of anything I could do to improve braking in the rear?

Also, whenever I hit a bump hard, the tires hit the wheel well. There aren't any springs up front - just shocks. Would replacing those shocks with stiffer shocks fix that problem?

Does anyone know of any other suspension 'fixes' that would give me a stiffer suspension?

  • Can Anyone Help Me Make My Car Into A Hotspot?

I'm taking a road trip, and with the way everyone's addicted to web access nowadays, I thought it would be cool if I surprised everyone with web access as we hit the road. That way, 1 person could be using a laptop to surf, another could be playing PS2 (I have one in the car) on the web, and another could be playing PSP on the web, etc, etc.

I'm pretty familiar with basic computer networking, but I haven't heard of any products that I could use to do this. If I get one of those wireless access cards from a cell phone company, then I'll only be able to connect a laptop to the web. All the routers I've seen need an Ethernet connection to the web.

Is there a router that can use a USB port for a web connection? Or does anyone know of a way to make a computer act as a router so that other wireless devices can access the web?

If money and time weren't objects I'm sure this would be possible, but I'm trying to keep this under a couple hundred bucks and be able to install this fairly quickly

  • Can't get the fuel filter off - HELP!?

Bought my car a year ago - now about 14k miles later I wanted to replace the fuel filter. I bought the car from up north (NYC) and I live in the south (NC). When i got under the car I noticed that the bolts on the fuel line that connect to the filter were rusted. No problem (I thought - I've used PB blaster in these kinds of incidences before) No luck!

I couldn't get it off, and I took it to Jiffy Lube and they couldn't get it off either.

I took it to Pep Boys and I was going to have them cut the fuel line and filter off and install a junction so that a new one could be installed. No luck - the side where the fuel tank is doesn't have enough 'line' to cut and install a junction.

The manager at Pep Boys said that I may be able to get a 'tip' from a northern mechanic since they deal with this kind of thing on a regular basis.

Any 'tricks of the trade' anyone can let me in on?

  • How many miles..........?

All the bikers out there, I have a few mileage questions....

How many miles in your opinion before you're no longer considered a 'beginner' or 'newbie'?

How many miles do you get from on a tank of gas?

How many miles an hour have you driven? (the fastest)

How many miles do you put on a bike in a day/month/year?

How many miles is the longest one way/round trip you've taken?

How many miles have you put on a bike in a day?

How many miles before you 'know' a bike?

When buying a used bike, how many miles (per year) is low/good-average/high?

How many miles will you travel for a good mechanic?

  • I have a hard time shifting into first when riding - HELP!?

    I have a '92 Katana 750

When I'm riding and I need to shift into first to start from a stop, I have trouble. I even sit at the stop light or stop sign kicking down on the shifter, and sometimes it'll go and sometimes it won't. I also have a bit of trouble getting into neutral, but from what I've been reading, so do a whole lot of other people.

Is this problem something as simple as adjusting a cable? or will I need to take it in to a shop?

If possible I'd really like to avoid taking it to a shop. I just got done having a bad experience with a shop (guy took 3 weeks to replace an alternator)

    Any help is appreciated!

  • My Motorcycle Dies After It Gets Hot?

I'm a newbie. I just bought my 1st bike - '92 Suzuki Katana 750 - from a mechanic who was selling it for someone else.

I taught myself to ride. I watched a lot of videos, read a lot of books and manuals (the local MSF class was booked for months), found a big parking lot, hopped on and started going.

As I gain experience I've noticed a problem. After I've been riding for about 20 mins, the engine will stall whenever I come to a stop, and then will not start again until I sit for a few minutes to let it cool off (whether it's in neutral or 1st) If I don't have to stop, then the bike will continue running with no problems, but as soon as I come to a stop, the bike stalls and I can't start again (in neutral or 1st with clutch in and throttle fully open) but only after I've been riding and the bike gets hot.

Does the type of gas matter? The mechanic cleaned the carbs before I picked it up.

I'm not a mechanic but I'm mechanically inclined - anyone know of anything I could do to fix this?

  • Is it possible to create playlists (folders) inside of Ipod playlists?

I have a 60 GB ipod, and I have created several playlists. A lot of my playlists are by artist name. For some artists I have every song/album they've made, and that can get to be quite a bit (for artists that have like 10 albums for example)

Is there a way I can create 'sub' playlists inside of existing playlists so that maybe I could have one main playlist for the artist, and then a sub-playlist for each of their albums?

  • My web browsers will not display certain images - HELP!!?

I've tried with both Firefox AND Internet Explorer, and when trying to view certain pics on certain sites, the pics will not show. Some will and some will not. For example, on certain sites powered by vBulletin some images will not show up. It seems to mostly be pictures that regular users upload, and not most pictures that are 'website loaded'. It's pretty annoying. Does anyone know about some settings I can check on my computer to fix this?

    Any help is appreciated.

  • One of my dogs licks the other dog's penis almost obsessively - HELP!!?

I have two dogs - a Bullmastiff and an American Bulldog. Both of which are just over a year old. The Bullmastiff has established himself as the 'Alpha Male', which I don't mind. However, the Bullmastiff licks the A. Bulldog's penis almost obsessively. I constantly have to tell him to stop (they are both boy dogs) The A. Bulldog doesn't seem to mind, but I do.

I know there are going to be a few ******* that find this to be funny and give crappy answers, but if there is anyone that could explain why he's doing this and what I can do to stop it, it would be greatly appreciated.

  • where is my blower motor resistor located?

    I have a 2000 Escalade

I asked a question before about the heater only working on high, and it was suggested by a few people that the blower motor resistor is probably bad.

My next question - Where is that resistor located?

Around me, only the dealer has that part (for 22 fricken dollars - sounds like a bit much for a resistor), and they aren't willing to help people with anything that would keep money out of they're pockets.

I also asked a question about the rear air only blowing cold air, and I was told that maybe the main control unit has gone bad. Anyone know what this is and where it's located?

(I'm pretty good when it comes to being mechanically inclined, I just don't have as much experience with as many parts and peices as professional mechanics)

  • 2000 Cadillac Escalade - heater fan only blows when turned on high?

The heat works and the AC does as well, but the fan will only blow when turned on high. This goes for the windshield defroster as well.

Also, the rear AC controls will only blow cold air whether the front is set to hot or cold - is that normal? was the rear only equipped with AC and not heat? or is there something wrong there as well?

  • 2000 Cadillac Escalade - I smell anitfreeze but there's no leak?

After driving, when I get out of the car, I smell antifreeze (coolant)

The level is where it should be (when hot and cold) and there are no leaks under the car, on the radiator or in the engine bay.

    should I be worried?
