  • Pitch for airspeed, power for altitude?

Got into a discussion with a DPE after a checkride and he brought up one of the most argued concepts to aviation, specially general aviation. He says that pitch for altitude and power for airspeed is more correct, I tend to agree depending on the phase of flight- in cruise, to me, it's obvious that power increases airspeed and pitch will control altitude. During the landing phase especially, I lean towards the old rhetoric that it's pitch for as, power for alt...but he says that it's opposite even in that phase. I was just curious how you all feel about this?

  • Do Flight Academies Pass Bad Pilots Through?

This was something that I have wondered for a while. There is a Part 141 school that is training foreign students, obviously passing them through giving them their certificate, who I feel cannot fly a plane worth a hoot. Since my local airport is about 50 miles away, many will solo here and land, many of the pilots enter the pattern wrong (although there is no set standard, just the 45 to downwind recommendation, it is still strongly suggested to be used by students who enter a G airport), they land pretty bad, and the seem confused often. I didn't know if it's just me or if these supposed flight academies are more or less "pilot mills" that will pass unworthy though? I went through Part 61 and never felt the need to go though Part 141, it sounded cool, but after a discussion with some of colleagues, it seems it wasn't so good of a choice.

  • Why Do People Put A Price On The Lives Of Loved Ones?

I see it all the time and I find it downright evil that someone will stoop low enough to sue someone for monetary compensation due to a wrongful death of a loved one.

Is there a price of grief? If so, how do you determine how much your troubles are worth?

By suing for the death of a loved one, are you not putting a price tag on the person's life? I thought life was priceless? How do you justify getting money for the life of others?

For those of you how disagree with this practice, why do you think that it is wrong to sue for anther's life? Do you think that it belittles the dead? Does it mean that the love was shallow and was only based on a dollar amount?

Does money heal wounds? Or is there a monetary amount in your head that you believe that you can forget about another human being?

Or is there more to it?

  • Can side slipping an aircraft cause a cross controlled stall?

I know the answer would be "yes" that if you exceed the angle of attack, but I was having this conversation earlier with a man that swears that side slipping (rolling the wing into the wind while keeping the nose on center line) is a very hazardous maneuver and that it should never be done in any aircraft. This man is a veteran pilot, has several more hours than I, but I have side slipped just because I can on a calm day, I never seen an issue with it as long as their airspeed is good and the a/c is in a nose down attitude. If I hear airfoil separation, I will add in power and pitch down further, but I never seen the concern for a cross controlled stall. He even says that rolling an aircraft to one side to get a good view to terrain under the aircraft poses a stall hazard as well, but I have never noticed a risk involved with a nose level attitude and decent airspeed.

Don't mistake me folks, but I got tired of looking through materials to get this answer. I know what a cross controlled stall is, which is usually a mistake done by pilots who overshoot on base and correct using uncoordinated inputs. I just never thought that putting the aircraft into a properly used and tried and true method of cross-wind landing an aircraft will pose an immediate threat.

Fill me in, maybe I missed something folks. I am currently sticking with my guns and disagreeing with his statements, but then again- aviation has has some crazy occurrences.

  • How to accurately shoot a SP101 Revolver?

I just recently purchased a Ruger SP101 snub nose 357 Magnum revolver and I have been having considerable trouble in maintaining accuracy of this pistol.

I own a S&W airweight .38 special and I have considerable experience with .45 LC and .454 Cas, and I have produced great results the first time around, but the SP101 seems to be giving me a run of trouble at accuracy at 7 yrds. Every time I shoot the pistol, it wants to shoot high; even when I lower the nose it still wants to shoot above the target. I have never had this problem with 50 rounds and not be able to gain some form of accuracy along the way. I thought it might have been because of the 357 cartridge, so I shot .38spcl through it and the gun still shoots high for my liking. I even bought some high quality rounds and I am still not seeing any difference.

Someone told me to buy Houge grips for it and see if that works, but the gun is not performing any better.

Anyone experience this or know of any suggestions?

  • Why is rap such a terrible genre?

Rap is ruining our airwaves and it doesn't seem to be coming to a stop at any point in the near future.

It is nothing but degradation of women, exaltation of lives of crime, poverty, promisciousness, drugs, and laziness. It is disturbing that the nations youngsters are allowed to hear this stuff on public radio stations.

On top of it all, to add insult to injury- rap "artists" are sub-par performers; there are numerous videos proving that a rapper cannot rap unless they are in a studio behind a microphone that has enhanced vocals along with the robot voice. During concerts, they have their synthesized mundane beat playing in the back groud, along with their own vocals; so they can put a microphone close to their mouth and appear as if they are singing.

Rap music has gotten out of hand; it is almost harassment to scan the radio stations and hear "I can make your bed rock" or "birthday sex" every other station, when it is an unwelcome gesture for me. Personally, this genre needs to be censored to protect the minds of our younger citizens, we do not need young boys thinking they can tell a girl a line from a lavish rap song and get away without being slapped with a harassment suit.

Do you think that rap music should be censored on the airwaves in order to prevent the escalation of the absurd lines and lyrics from causing the minds of our younger generations to be poisoned with the belief that drugs, promisciousness, violence, materialism, excessive cursing anti-authoritativeness, laziness, demeaning behaviors towards women, and drugs is acceptable and thought highly upon?

Can they not make a decent song or play real instruments instead of reusing the same computerized snare drum beat and "hey, hey, hey" in the background?

  • Someone Breaks Into Your House...?

Someone breaks into your dwelling, even with many states having Castle Laws and Retreat Laws enacted, would you open fire anyway without giving them any warning? Why or Why do you not believe they deserve to be warned before firing upon them?
