21 year old vegan from New Zealand. I'm vegan for ethical reasons primarily but also acknowledge the health and environmental advantages of my lifestyle. I'm an abolitionist and believe that encouraging the use of more "humane" animal products (such as free range, CAK etc) only re-inforces the idea that animal exploitation is ok and makes it more profitable for the companies involved. "Kinder, gentler" exploitation is not the answer and, if anything, only encourages more animal use. http://veganfreaks.net/animalemancipation.pdf I'm a Zoology honours student whose passions include evolution, animal behaviour/sociobiology, genetics and environmental protection. I'm also interested in human nutrition, fitness, feminism, sexuality and gender.

  • Trapped on an island: natural hair advice needed!?

I know this is in the wrong section but I'm hoping to find a few people sympathetic to may cause here (rather than in "beauty and style"!). Yes I'm steriotyping, sorry :)

In a few weeks I will be heading off to a remote island for 3 months. The facilities are pretty basic: shelter, bed, and a long trek to drinkable water.

I'm not predicting much of a problem with personal hygiene as there is always the sea to rinse myself off in.

While this lack of washing doesn't phase me in the slightest, I will eventually return to civilization, and I have started to wonder what effect going 3 months without shampoo will have on my hair. I've always wanted to wean myself off shampoo but was scared of the greasy stage.

I've haven't used harsh shampoos for years now (just a natural one with a few essential oils), my hair is very, very short (~2cm), and it was rather curly before I chopped it off all those years ago.

I've heard that the best way to get gorgeous natural hair is to rinse only (water) and brush daily. Is the brushing part required/recommended for curly hair? I used to never brush my hair when it was long because it just turned into one giant frizz!!

Also, as I will be washing in the sea, any advice on how the salt water will effect this "naturalizing" experiment? Should I try to keep my hair out of the water?? That possibly means no rinsing as I'm not sure there are streams on the island and drinking water is for drinking only (obviously).

Any advice/comments from people who have experimented with/still have natural unwashed hair.

    Cheers!

  • What do negative Fis values mean?

I have analysed three separate populations and gained the following values:

    -0.647058824 -0.030674847 -0.018912746

I know that Fis values can be negative but I can not find any information on what this means about the degree of inbreeding (or outbreeding) of the corresponding populations.

Any help or links that I can trawl through would be appreciated. Neither my course notes, textbook or trusty google have been able to enlighten me!!

    Cheers in advance :D

  • NZ brands of vegan beer, wine, cider?

Does anyone know some common New Zealand brands of beer, wine, cider that are vegan-friendly?

I have only drunk spirits since becoming vegan (a while ago now) and will continue to do so until I can confirm which beers etc are "safe".

I'm mostly concerned with cider (*sigh* it's been a while my friend!). The makers of "harvest", "wild cider", and "bulmers" are not replying to my emails!

Also, does anyone know the regulations about labelling wine (red in particular). I often check bottles: some say refined using fish or egg products but others don't mention anything! I avoid these as well as I assume they still use animal products but just don't mention it explicitly.

Any help appreciated!!! Have tried searching the internet myself but all the websites I've found only refer to US/UK brands. Little ol' NZ seems to be forgotten :)

  • Original Brothers Grimm movie?

Does anyone know the name of an old black and white movie about the Brothers Grimm??

I can't remember much about the movie other than one of the brothers was played by a german actor and was "uptight", and there was a bookstore involved somehow.

    Any help much appreciated :D

  • Standard number of microsatelites used in forensic analysis?

I'm looking into the genetic analysis of the Romanov family. One of the criticisms of the original analysis is the small number of microsatellites used; however, I have no idea what the standard of modern forensics is. Any help/links appreciated, thanks :)
