How much can merchants charge for debit card transactions?
I went to a local burger joint by my house(southern California) and they wanted to charge me $1 for a debit card transaction on a $1 burger! Not having any money on hand and not having enough money in my account to pull out $20 I walked away, but after I had done so I thought I remember reading some where online that the government was reducing the legal amount merchants can charge from 45cents to 35 cents, I know most places nearby do charge 45cents and after I had read that article I noticed all of them charging only 35 cents, so am I making all this up in my mind or is there a legal limit on what merchants can charge for these debit card transactions?
I tried to google it but the only results were very long articles filled with longwinded fancy words that I didn't care to try to decipher.
