Hi, as a beginner (never fished before) i plan to start with spinning reels as it is clear to me that those are the best way to start, and their design removes many particularities which occur in other types of reel, now which spinning reel should i use? my current choices are 'Shimano Socorro' and 'Okuma Avenger'; both are graphite and range about 50-60$, they list their load from 8 to 12 lbs, and 20 lbs max drag (i believe). I plan to do my fishing from the water side (shore) of fresh water, and though is not the plan, the idea is also to be prepared for all conditions (boat or salt water). Socorro is described as a salt water all purpose reel; does not seem very popular since at least in amazon, it does not appear on the autocomplete, but being salt water specified, i believe it should last for a while (moreover in fresh water), and it seems like a general purpose reel, suited enough for my interest. The avenger is listed as a 'baitfeeder', which according to what i have read, is a double drag system (front and back). I understand the back drag is to control the bait, so it is not as strong as the front drag, and i plan to use metal or plastic lures (no live bait), but i may get another use for the two levels of drag. Aluminum reels seem to be over 100$, which is more than i intend to spend as an entry level, so if everything goes well and i get the hang of it i may upgrade to a stradic ci4 and a 'cedros', which is aluminum (once i know how to use it at least). does anybody have any suggestions or comments about these choices for an entry level?

hi, i want to start fishing on my own, i don't plan to go with somebody else who has experience, so everybody i make will be mainly because i assume it or because i have previously read it somewhere (that's the plan so far), so i was reading stuff and browsing 'reels' on amazon, and there seems to be some brands that according to reviews seem interesting to me (shimano and 'pflueger' or something like that).

According to the search results, there are lots of models ranging from different prices, for example, i noticed some of these models are made in different materials, which justify plenty of the price gaps, nonetheless, besides of the construction material, the range seems too wide, according to model names and prices.

i was browsing the shimano page and there are reels listed in these categories: low profile baitcasting, round baitcasting, conventional, offshore spinning reels, and spinning reels, what does that mean? i though all reels where spinning reels, what does each category mean, and what is a non spinning reel?

from the top of my mind, some of the characteristics are the size of the spool and the gear ratio; i understand that the tangent speed of the spool (or the speed of line retrieval, i don't know if there is a name for it) must be faster than the speed of the fish if i want to reel it faster than the speed it can move, so the ratio of the spool and the gearbox make sense (and that if i want to get larger fishes that move fast, i have to reel fast), i also understand that if i am gonna hold this in my hand, the lighter the better, as long as light does not mean flimsy, plus the number of bearings mean more or less how smooth it can move or reel, what other characteristics are relevant in a fishing reel? how each one affects the reeling process? why so many price differences and why so many models that look the same, even in the same brand?

i was looking at wikipedia and it seems reels are provided with a clutch of some sort to a 'drag disc', or a brake, to slow down or impose force on the movement of the fish.. what i have in mind is to spend the less time possible from the time the fish gets hooked till the time the fish is out of the water (i also plan to cut its throat as soon as it comes out of the water, so it dies at once, instead of suffocating for a long time), would that it be a good policy?

which are the relevant aspects of a fishing reel, and what relation do i have to look at between the fishing reel and the pole?

and at last, can anybody suggest a page with schematics on how to tie the bait (no worms or live bait, just metal hooks) to a fishing line, and how to place a line in a reel? (take into account that i have never fished before, and i am not familiar with this, so i am talking about basics)

hi, could you recommend a good freeware monitor? I have looked in download.com and sourceforge.net and there are many programs there but i am looking for something that does not just tell me outgoing and incoming traffic, but which programs are using thje network, for example, if i am not loading a page but i see there is traffic, i can see which program is causing the trafic

hi, this is a movie about some kids, one of them jewish, in a french school during ww2 period. the jewish kid hides his origin because of obvious reasons. i remember a scene where they (the jewish kid and a friend) get lost in a forest and find a razorback. i also remember a scene where the kids are in the school yard through a celebration and are required to do the nazi hand hail, and the jewish kid just stand there while the other kids do it. the film should be around or older than 20 years. i saw it as a kid and back then i did not enjoy it, it was like those books you have to read for school that you only read them because you have to, but i want to see it now, though i dont remember the name. i dont remember if i saw it in spanish or in french with subtitles. the title has probably the word 'kids' or 'children' in the name, any pointers?

they mention something about drawing an oval with string, tacks & a stick. i was wondering how to draw an oval with those materials, i think we could use the definition of oval (set of points for which the sum of the distance from focal points remain constant), so if i tie the string to two tacks (focal points), all the points i can draw with the string pulled belong to the oval. is this how it would be? what is the stick for?

this is a 'which linux distro is better' question, and though it may seem this way, it is not intended to start a flaming war.

background: i have a laptop that i recently formatted because suddenly it lost all performance, so i reformatted it (win xp) and left only the programs/games i though i was going to use. yet, though i have not used it yet for documents or for real use (so it must not be fragmented yet), it is running very slow again, so i guess i will install the programs in another device and leave this one just to make experiments and leave the programs i use the most only. so, why not experiment a little with linux? i plan to leave a part with linux and another part with win xp. so if i'm gonna place linux there, i would like to know which one. i have used linux before (as an user, not as admin), but i have not cared about distros and stuff yet, and frankly, they all look the same to me. there are some things out there, so for example, knoppix, im gonna install it in the device (no live boot), so no advantage here. right now 'ubuntu' is in vogue (by things like beryl), but to my interest beryl is a thing that looks pretty and keeps you amazed by three months, then you get used to it and you just need to access all you can in the fastest way, so it does not bother me, but neither i would consider it as an advantage. which reasons are there to choose or not choose any particular distro of linux, and what are the real differences?

hi, recently i had to reformat a device running xp. i listen to music in this device with 'itunes', from my library mostly by ripping my own cds. in power configuration i have set it to turn off monitor after 5 minutes of no use (monitor only, no hard drive). its been many times it freezes when ripping cds or listening music in the library, and i think it happens right when it turns off monitor. has anyone else a similar config (itunes running on xp, turn off monitor -not just screensaver, but turn off in power management configuration- after a timeout)? how does it behave in your device? (i want to know if there is something else that may be wrong, or this situation happens with most people)

hi, recently i formatted a pc, before i formatted it when i placed a cd in the drive it would not execute autorun by default, since i reformatted all settings are gone, and i don't remember if i changed something so it does not auto run in the previous setting, so how do i turn off this option?

Cómo están. mi inquietud es, hoy en día los portátiles han bajado considerablemente de precio, costando casi la tercera parte o menos de lo que costaban hace nada; pero casi todos vienen con windows, y cada vez que windows saca una nueva versión, todos los equipos hasta ese momento quedan obsoletos. un portátil, a diferencia de un desktop, no se puede actualizar abriéndolo y cambiandole las tripas, de manera que, o se vende como obsoleto, o se usa para otra cosa. me gustaría saber quiénes han instalado linux, bsd, solaris o alguno que no use tantos recursos en un computador que deja de ser 'el principal', cuando ya no corre bien la nueva versión de windows, sólo por ver en qué consiste eso de linux, o mirar de qué se trata o cómo se come eso, y si lo han hecho, cómo les ha ido con la nueva experiencia

digamos que me gustan las carreras, pero no me llama la atención que sea a media noche, y no tanto por cuestión de la policía, pero sí me daría embarrada que alguien se atravesara y me lo llevara por delante, ya que no tengo cómo responder por la vida de otra persona, ni tendría forma de reponerla. hay alguna forma o algún sitio, que digamos simplemente llamar a un amigo y decirle quiubo, a tal hora nos vemos, y poder correr LEGALMENTE, y SIN QUE NADIE SE ATRAVIESE, y sin que sea en un evento programado (es decir no un evento en el autódromo ni nada que toque con semanas de anticipación) ni nada por el estilo, sino simplemente que ahí está para cuando uno quiera? la idea es que tenga curvas para ambos lados
