  • Expert help with computer please!! Laptop hardware problems?

    it's a 4-month old dell Studio 1535

Laptop won't start correctly, keyboard and touchpad don't wok correctly, hotkeys at top of keyboard don't light wen pressed.

some keys must be pressed for nearly a second before will process it. touchpad won't work in windows, and keyboard didn't for 10 minutes.

the computer is not hot, but the fan is running at full

i recently installed Ubuntu 8.10 about two weeks ago, and (since i only use Ubuntu now :) ) the problem started after the computer was restored from sleep mode earlier today.

i have tried updating/re-installing the bios (a03), but neither fixed it

    if it helps any, the keys which aren't working correctly are: 4 5 6 7 8 y u p \ h l n m (Num Lock) (Caps Lock)

when the computer is shut off, the power button must be held for about three seconds before the computer will power up,and the normal light cascade of the hotkeys does not run (a feature on new dell laptops)

these abnormalities occur on both windows vista and Ubuntu

  • Change Network computer name in linux?

I'm moderately new to Linux, and recently managed to put Ubuntu on my laptop, and in the process of converting other computers i manage to Ubuntu. the only problem I've had this far is that all of the computers identify as 'ubuntu', and I'd like to change them to something more unique than an IP address.

Does anyone know how to change the computer name? I've been looking, but can't find anything so far
