  • does anyone have or know where I can find a sewing pattern for a Howie style lab coat?

I'm referring to the double-breasted, buttons across one shoulder and down one side style, most recently made famous by the title character in "Dr. Horrible's Sing-Along Blog". searching the web seems to come up with a lot of sites with folks asking this question, or having all the words in, but no actual patterns.

  • Digital SLR recommendos under $1000? Under $1500?

I'm looking to buy a digital SLR to augment my film SLR camera. My film camera is a Minolta Maxxum 5000i - not high end but not junk. I've got a couple of lenses for the film camera that I'd like to be able to use with the digital as well to avoid buying duplicates (ditto future lenses, I'd like them to go both ways, so to speak.).

    Anyone have first-hand recommendations?

  • Hunting mid-size game with a Crossbow...?

Due to a somewhat serious neck injury which crushed the nerve roots going to my arms (primarily to the left, I'm right-handed), I find myself no longer able to draw a bow of sufficient weight to (cleanly, ethically) hunt mid-sized game (Deer, Turkey, Feral Hogs, etc.). I can legally hunt any of this game in Missouri with a crossbow (though MO state law classifies a crossbow with firearms, since you don't have to hold it drawn.), but I have no experience with them as hunting weapons. I owned one several years ago, but used it exclusively for target shooting, so I am familiar with their characteristics and use.

What I don't know is this - How much crossbow do I need for deer? When I see them advertized I see two traits emphasized; draw weight and arrow speed in FPS. Which is more relevant? I see draw weights from 100 to almost 200 pounds, and arrow speeds from 120 to almost 300FPS (I know that's dependant on arrow weight). Help? What do I need to pay attention to?

Do this year's Rams have bad enough luck to do it?

  • Very dark image looking through viewfinder...?

I have a Minolta Maxxum 5000i camera, a fairly nice all-automatic SLR. I have two lenses, a 35-80mm, and a 70-210mm zoom.. The 35-80 came with the camera new, the 70-210 is a Vivitar lens, labeled "licensed by Minolta", and I've used them both for years.

Yesterday, I pulled the camera out after fairly long storage and I took a couple of test shots with the small lens, life is good, slapped the zoom on and I can't see ****. If I point the lens right at a bright light source I can see the light but it looks like the camera is wearing cheap shades. The image through the viewfinder is VERY dark and grainy. The camera does, however, focus, which implies it can see something. When I try to take a picture, the camera just lights up the "I ain't got enough light" light in the viewfinder and won't open the shutter, even with flash enabled. I've cleaned the lenses, and when I took the lens OFF the camera body and looked through it, it looks fine, bright and clear.

  • "Switch Hitter" question?

Can a batter "Switch sides" during an at-bat? That is to say, take the first pitch as a left handed batter, then before the next pitch switch to batting right handed? Obviously, there are players who can physically do it, so this is a rules question - is it allowed?

It seems to me, if legal, as a way to defeat situational pitching - player in in the on deck circle indicating he'll bat right handed, steps into the box to do so, other team substitutes a left handed pitcher, he throws one pitch (so he can't be substituted again), batter moves to left side...?

Also, I am remembering correctly that a pitcher cannot be replaced mid-at-bat unless injured, right?

  • Why the resurgent interest in 10Ga Shotguns?

There have been a couple of questions recently asking where to get a 10Ga gun, and all of them have had someone asking, in the answers, the obvious question "Why?", so here I am asking it. Why a 10Ga? What do you use that much gun for?

I am not in any way criticizing, I own several guns, including some big guns for no more reason than they can be fun to shoot (Like my 8-1/2" .44 Magnum), but I can't picture situation, hunting, clays, self defense or anything else, that would make someone want to endure the punishment of a 10Ga shotgun....So, 10Ga people - What are you gonna shoot with that thing that makes it worth it?

  • Best 20G Over/Under gun under $1000?

I am looking for an over under double gun in 20 gauge for my girlfriend to shoot skeet. I specifically don't want an auto gun though it may well be suitable, nor do I want anything with plastic furniture...so, first hand experience preferred, what's the best gun under $1000?

  • what should the clearance be between Piston and Cylinder Wall in a V6 Engine?

2000 Ford Mustang, 3.0L V6 engine - I am having a "valve job" done, due to a large oil leak through one of the valve guides. The mechanic who took the heads off (to send them to a machine shop for the actual work) says the Piston to Cylinder clearance is too big, and I should replace the engine - though prior to removing the heads all six cylinders compression tested at 175PSI. He has not yet gotten in there with a feeler gauge and actually measured the gap, but I have told him I'm not buying an engine until he does.
