What to feed dog with upset stomach? - No boiled meats or rice, please?
We've been to the vet today. He's normally on Orijen 6Fish or Innova Evo Red Meat.
Our regular vet is out till Monday, so another vet saw us when we took him in. The vet prescribed him antibiotics, said we should fast him for 24 hrs and then cook him a meal of boiled chicken and rice for 4 days.
The problem is he's sensitive to chicken, and we never give him any grains in his food.
I told the vet that he can't have chicken, so he said just boil any meat to render the fat out and mix it with rice to give him.
The temp vet we saw today doesn't agree with raw feeding (which we do time to time). Our regular vet would give us better info, but he won't be in till Monday.
The temp vet also said to just feed the dog the regular volume of meat and rice as dog food, but from experience from feeding raw, that's not accurate as raw food has a lot more water weight and so a person should feed anywhere from app. 2% to 3% of the dog's body weight in raw food.
Any other suggestions?
17 AnswersDogs1 decade agoQuestion about pet shops?
I know what people say about petshops and buying cats or dogs from them. I was recently visiting my childhood home and there was a petshop that I remember from when I was younger (almost 15 years ago) that was still there when I visited. It's not a chain pet shop.
Anyway, the pet shop there had pets there for sale, but the weird thing about it was that it was for SUPER low.. I mean like, adoption-rate prices. They had grown cats selling for $30. They weren't carrying too many animals. Just the 4 cats that I saw and 2 dogs.
I didn't have the chance to ask, but I'm wondering if some pet stores offer store space to help animals find homes? There's no way they're making a profit off selling pets for $30.. none of them were purebred, and they were all being marked as mutts, not the more 'fashionable' names pet stores sometimes give mutts..
Staff were clearly on hand taking care of the animals, too.
13 AnswersDogs1 decade agoDoes doing this make my dogs think I'm psycho?
We have a very young puppy and a senior dog. The senior dog really doesn't need many corrections, as he really isn't naughty at all. But our puppy is 23 weeks and she is a ball of energy, always getting herself disciplined or said 'NO' to.
The problem is I feel like when I say NO to our younger dog, our older dog looks at me like I've gone crazy, because he thinks I'm talking to him.. and he isn't doing anything.
When I tell my younger dog to 'sit', our older dog attempt to sit as well (though I know its hard for him to because of arthritis - on prescription meds to manage).. so I'll tell him 'no, no, not you.. don't sit'..
Will this make my old dog insecure? Or would it really not matter?
10 AnswersDogs1 decade agoPicky, fussy, stubborn pup and food...?
We have a miniature pinscher who is currently 23wks old. She weighs about 5.5lbs currently. We have her on a primarily raw diet though at times we also do give her kibble (innova). She does great on both, no soft stools, great hair, eyes, teeth, etc.
The problem is she is ridiculously picky. We never feed her food prepared for a human - ever - yet when we put down her food at times she will eat it, and at times completely ignore it.. as in she will not even take 1 bite.
For a while when she was smaller, we would just free-feed her a preportioned amount of food. If we put down her food at 10AM, she would eventually finish by 10PM. .. or sometimes not at all.
Now, it's becoming very inconvenient for us to free-feed her (we are fostering other dogs) and so we would like her to eat when she gets her food. I know the whole.. put the food down, pick it up in 20 minutes rule. I did that, and for 2 days she did not eat even one bite and on the end of the 2nd day she was VERY
6 AnswersDogs1 decade agoEmergency male foster and resident male dog..?
Due to some unforeseen circumstances, I've currently taken in a male foster. He seems to be around 1.5 years old, a cocker spaniel and dachshund mix. He's very quiet and obedient, already house trained.
The problem is that I currently own two other dogs, an 11 year old male doberman pinscher and a 23 week old female miniature pinscher. While the pup gets along with the our foster, our male dog (who IS fixed) seems to hate him.
While the our male dog sometimes disciplines our pup when she's too annoying or bites too hard, I can understand that. However, it seems that he is just unexplainably aggressive towards the foster. I can understand the hostility between 2 male dogs and territorial issues and if the foster is challenging our male dog. However, the foster is a very submissive, calm dog and most of the time he's not even doing ANYTHING except just walking by our male dog who will bare his teeth, growl, and attempt to bite him.

8 AnswersDogs1 decade agoAbout a beloved pet's death?
This is maybe a morbid question, but one that I've been thinking about for a while.
Some, or maybe, most, people have had experiences with a pet dying or a pet being put down. When a pet is put down for any reason like sickness, suffering, etc, the owner and the pet is at the vets' at an appointed time and the pet is put down. In that event, the vet will obviously help you out with dealing with the body of the deceased.
What I fear is the event in which my beloved geriatric dog dies of natural causes in my house. What do I do at that point? Please don't say bury him in the backyard. My parents moved away a while ago and the house and yard in which he grew up in belongs to another owner. Currently we live in an apartment with no yard.
I don't necessarily expect my dog to die anytime soon, but he is a large breed dog reaching 11 years of age. Nothing is acutely wrong with him - blood test are all excellent, teeth, eyes, ears, checked by the vet and said to be excellent.
15 AnswersDogs1 decade agoPoll: About dogs, do you ever correct people when...?
they say something so ridiculous?
Example: Today my boyfriend and I were at the vet and 2 ladies were there with their dogs. They were talking to each other and to the receptionist. One of the ladies had a nice looking pekingese, but she was complaining about that she had paid "extra" because it was to be a "teacup" one maxing out at 5lbs (it was about 10lbs...) and that she was upset about it.. to this, the other lady she was talking to said that she expected the same of her maltese.. she also said she paid extra for her "Teacup" maltese but it had grown up "regular" and she seemed displeased. A 5lb pekingnese?!
Either the receptionist didn't know any better, or she was just trying not to say anything but she was nodding like she understood their situation and conflict..
Personally, I felt like telling them the facts about runt dogs but on the other hand I felt like they weren't people who were going to be reasoned with.
Have you ever had such a situation happen to you?
16 AnswersDogs1 decade agoDo car dealerships do this?
Well, here's the situation. My boyfriend and I were going to buy a car (in cash) today at the local Nissan dealership. The problem is that although we've completed all the paperwork and just had to go in and give them the check, today when we checked our bank account, a money transfer we were expecting (Been more than a week, too) did not go through yet. The problem is that the dealership had lent us a car to get around between the time we turned in our trade-in car and when we were going to come back with the check to pick up our new car.
The contract we signed on the borrowed car was 5 days. Tomorrow is five days. So either way, tomorrow we have to go and hand in the car even if we cannot pick up the new car as the check cannot clear until a later date. Do you think it's possible to write a check to the dealership and just tell them to not cash it until a certain date? We had the money re-transferred and we have a solid date as to transaction completion now.
Of course, we
3 AnswersBuying & Selling1 decade agoRephrasing the question: Old, large-breed dog, cold weather, and clothes..?
I had previously asked this question, and got several responses. I thought I'd ask again with more details, because it probably was partially at least my fault I didn't get any helpful responses.
Anyway, we have a 10 year old doberman pinscher. He's oversized for his breed (not to conformation), but it's not like we specifically shopped for an oversized dog. His sire is an AKC CH sire, to conformation, and so is his dam. He's just the way he is and we still love him to bits. He weighs 115lbs but he's not overweight in the least both by just LOOKING at him and also because the vet has told us so. We are actually supposed to help him pack on a few pounds because he's been losing weight recently and you can see the bumps of his spine and again also because the vet (2 different ones, one at the University of Pennsylvania's veterinary school) have told us so.
Due to his weight and his age, he has a bit of arthritis. He is already on prescription medication to manage it, and he's
9 AnswersDogs1 decade agoWhere can I found PRACTICAL clothes for our dogs?
I'm not talking about the novelty little t-shirts or whatever for toy breeds. I need to find a large winter coat (something like a pony blanket, maybe?) and a water-proof coat for our 115lb doberman pinscher. In the winter and in the rain his old age means his joints bothers him when we're out, and his fur (being a doberman) is short to begin with.
We also need to find the same for our small breed miniature pinscher. Her single coat makes her very very cold when she gets wet and she cries when it's too cold out.
Anyone have any suggestions? Don't say petsmart. They only carry novelty clothes for small dogs.
11 AnswersDogs1 decade agoDo you find it incredibly rude when...?
Do you find it very rude when you're out walking your dog, and people come up to you and pet your dog without permission and ask how much it costed?
I feel funny whenever somebody ask me how much our dog/s costed. I feel like my dogs have suddenly become street hookers with a set value! And I also have no idea what to answer. Do I just answer the price it cost, or do I also lump in all the vet bills, food costs, etc? I feel like most of the people who ask me this are just asking because they feel like our puppy is "cute" - and also refer to her as the wrong breed - a chihuahua instead of a miniature pinscher. By that, I'm insinuating that they want to get a dog for all the wrong reasons!
Has anyone had similar experiences? What have you answered?
17 AnswersDogs1 decade agoIntroducing dogs? Not younger puppy to older dog but vice versa?
Everyone always posts questions about introducing a younger dog to an older dog, and the answer always has to keep in mind the older dog's position in the house as the only dog and the house being it's property.
But our situation is the other way around. We have a very young dog (16 wks) that we are bringing a 9year old doberman home to. The doberman is my dog, we've raised him since he was 8wks old. For various circumstances, he had been living at my sister's place. We just got our new puppy about 6 weeks ago and she has never met my first dog. Tomorrow, my older sister is driving my doberman over to live with us.
Is anything different in the way you should introduce the dogs? I don't think that our puppy has a sense of territory yet. She doesn't bark when other people are outside yet, and doesn't really seem to have a sense of property yet either.
To top it off, my sister is on her way to attending a race (she's a professional athlete) and so she's dropping off one of her
5 AnswersDogs1 decade agoHow common is it..?
that there are huge, gigantic variations in a single breed?
What I mean to say is, on the AKC page it lists the height variation of a breed of dog. For our miniature pinscher, the normal shoulder height is about 10 to 12.5 inches at full weight.
She's 16 weeks old now, and recently we took her to the park to let her meet some other dogs and people. At the park, we saw a chihuahua. Now, right now, our miniature pinscher is a little under 5lbs, with her full weight being around 9-10lbs. I had thought that a chihuahua's regular weight at adulthood was under 6lbs ideally, so I assumed that the size she is right now would be the size of a regular chihuahua.
Well, the chihuahua we saw at the park was huge! It was maybe twice as big, if not more, as our miniature pinscher! I was shocked. This dog wasn't fat.. it was just BIG.. and the owner insisted it was a full-breed chihuahua..
I know there are variations, obviously, but how common is it to have variations like this?
5 AnswersDogs1 decade agoI want to breed my dog, I just got it and it's 2 mths old.. when can I..?
Okay, no.
How many times have you seen a question header like that and clicked on it expecting a joke? Like sometimes there are questions here that joke around with ridiculous contexts and what not.
How many times has it happened that not only was it not a joke, but it was for real? And terrible?
For example, how many times have you clicked on a question asking about "breading dogs" expecting to answer with "with panko and/or italian bread crumbs" and it's a serious question?
What is the most egregrious question you've ever seen on here that you thought was a joke, but wasn't?
9 AnswersDogs1 decade agoIf a breeder will ship dogs, does it automatically...?
Make them terrible breeders? I've seen several statements throughout this forum where people assume that if a breeder ships dogs, they are byb's, irresponsible, or just out for the money.
What does everyone think? I myself don't believe this is the case. I've been to competitions (just as an audience member) and plenty of the people there who own dogs with great pedigrees, testing, CH bloodlines, responsible amount of litters, experience in breeding and showing (one lady I met has been in it for 30plus years..) ship their dogs.
Anyone have experience or thoughts on this? Shipping a dog of course doesn't mean that a potential owner is not screened.
14 AnswersDogs1 decade agoFacial sunscreen question..?
A lot of products I see on the market in the US for facial sunscreen is only a SPF 15.
Is a SPF 15 sunscreen even useful? I heard that you should at least wear a SPF30 when out in the sun. Is there a reason a lot of products are only spf 15? Is there something wrong/bad side affects of products higher than that?
Whenever I travel overseas, I always buy a bunch of this facial sunscreen from Japan. It's like a milky lotion and it has an spf of 50.
I'm kind of a skin care fanatic, and I'm just wondering why it is that facial sunscreen usually doesn't have high SPF as opposed to body sun screen.. at least the cosmetic ones that I have seen especially for faces.
2 AnswersOther - Skin & Body1 decade agoWhat are the ways a dog's bark is expressed in different languages?
I decided to put this in the dog's section just to see how different a dog's bark varies across languages.
For example, in English people say a dog sounds like "woof, woof"..
In Japanese, we say it's more like "won" or, if it's whining, "kyun"..
What are some of the ways a dog's bark is expressed in the languages you know?
3 AnswersDogs1 decade agoIs this counter-intuitive?
My boyfriend and I got a miniature pinscher puppy recently. She's 14 weeks old now, and I've been training her since she was 10 weeks old. When we are home and she is out of her crate, she is basically house-broken. I wouldn't trust to leave her out while we are gone yet though. Also, I've been working with her to come, sit, and lay down. I also discipline her when she misbehaves, chews things she shouldn't, bites, tries to jump on the furniture, etc. In my mind, I'm more of the "strict" parent out of the two of us. The boyfriend (this is his first dog, but not mines) doesn't know too much about teaching dogs or anything, so for the most part he's becoming a playmate to her.
He feeds her and plays with her but generally leaves everything else to me (which I don't mind).
My question is, it seems that our puppy prefers to be with more more often than she prefers to be with my boyfriend, even though I'm the "mean" one always setting rules for her. Do dogs like discipline?
9 AnswersDogs1 decade agoTo other japanese speakers..?
How often, if ever, do you try to practice with kanji in words that are generally typed/written now only/mostly in hiragana?
Can you even write the ones now written mostly in hiragana, in kanji anymore? Or can you just recognize them as being 'about right' when you can pick it from a list (like, when typing it on a computer?)
I'm talking about such words like.. ありがとう 。。有難う
or ’ご' for honorific like 御馳走 ?
if you write a paragraph only in haragana, it might see a litlte elementary. but if you wrote a whole paragraph using the kanji where there are kanji equivalents, do you think some people would have trouble reading it?
I feel bad when I start to forget how to write characters exactly. I don't hand write so much anymore, but recently I started to take a calligraphy class in the university and so I've been thinking about this recently. Please let me know how you have done!
