  • My girlfriend shows many of the signs and symptoms of anemia, but blood tests come back negative?

    Her signs and symptoms:

    1) Extreme chronic fatigue - she sleeps roughly 12 hours per day, but isn't capable of doing much for any of the day outside maybe three hours or so, sometimes not even that. We're talking too tired to even watch a movie or read here.

    2) Shortness of Breath - She has had asthma symptoms for approximately two weeks. She does not normally have this response to allergyns in the area. She has never been diagnosed with asthma, but she does not think she's ever been tested for it.

    3) Enlarged, sensitive spleen - Her spleen was enlarged enough one night to actually see a distention in her abdomen in the area of her spleen.

    4) Lightheadedness, especially when standing

She HAS seen a doctor about this. In fact, she sees a doctor regularly. She is a fibromyalgia patient and thus requires a lot of medical visits.

She has had blood tests for anemia, including but not limited to a CBC. They came back negative, but her symptoms were much more mild then.

My question: Is this possible? For the bloodtests to show a false negative? If not, what other conditions could cause these symptoms? I'm an army medic, which doesn't make me an expert in things like these, but I know a little about what questions to ask and I live with her so I can see her symptoms regularly, and they are worrisome.

She's headed back to the doctor on Monday morning, and for the first time I'll be coming with her to help her with asking questions and articulating her symptoms (she's very shy.) I'll do my homework on any answers I get here and you might very well help me is asking the questions that will get her the treatment she needs.

    Thanks in advance.

NOTE: On fibro - her doctors are starting to think they may have misdiagnosed her as she is not responding to treatments for it.

  • setup(random numbers).exe virus. What is this and how do I get rid of it?

Here's the problem: A pop up window opens quickly after I boot my laptop. It is requesting permission from a program that is called "setup(string of random numbers).exe.

Of course I never give permission for the program to run, but if I cancel the pop up or use "end task" in task manager, a new version of the program with a different string of random numbers pops up.

I have a full version of Malware Bytes, and it cannot detect a problem. I ran Spybot Search and Detroy, and it also cannot detect a problem.

The virus writes a file in user/app data/local/temp. I have started in safe mode and deleted all these files, and they repopulate as soon as I reboot the computer.

I've searched extensively online for more information on this virus, but it appears to be unnamed and unsolved. Does anyone have better information than this? What do I have and how do I get rid of it???

  • where would I find a listing of legit schools that offer online degrees?

By legit I mean a real college. A state college or university, or respected private college. Nothing like DeVry or University of Phoenix or any other tech school. I'm in the military and I move constantly so actually taking traditional classes is impractical for me, but I want to earn my bachelors.

  • Transferring from Army Reserve to National Guard?

I have two friends who want to transfer from Army Reserve to the California National Guard so they can take up ADSW positions here. They are both good at their jobs and have spotless records. Do any of you have any experience with this sort of thing?

  • How should I learn guitar scales?

I want to expand what I can do with the guitar, and I need to learn scales that I can take up and down the neck. I can read tabs so finding the scales online isn't hard BUT I'm completely overwhelmed. I don't know which scales to learn first, or a way to practice to help them stick. What is a good way to learn scales? Where do I start?

  • I need some good songs for acousitc guitar from standard tuning?

I'm an intermediate level guitarist (by this I mean I can play all open chords well, E and A shape barre chords, and figure out some basic single note pieces. I don't know scales well though, at least not yet.)

I'm looking for fun songs to play that will help me get better.

Some recent songs I've been working on:

    Hotel California - Eagles

    Gallows Pole - Zeppelin

Burn One Down - Ben Harper

Yellow Ledbetter (too hard for now) - Peral Jam

    Nutshell - Alice in Chains

    Creep - Radiohead

    Green Eyes - Cold Play

Just give me a list of three or five of the best you can think of. I've been playing a ton lately so I'll probably try them all.

    Thanks in advance!

  • How can you possibly say all arts are equal?

How can you say that all arts, Tai Chi, Praying Mantis Kung Fu, Aikido, MMA, Brazilian Jiu Jitsu, etc, are all equally effective systems?

To be effective, a method must have experimentation and observation, just like any science.

Full contact provides that experimentation. Video provides ample chance for observation.

Speaking of which, MMA contests like the UFC have proven time and time again which techniques and which strategies work.

And before you launch into a speech about the differences between the UFC and a "real fight" (which often exists in some weird fantasy world) let me say right now that I have been a police officer and am currently a martial arts instructor for the military. I KNOW what a real fight looks like. It looks a lot more like the UFC than it does any "traditional" martial arts class I've seen.

I just don't understand the mentality involved in the "all arts are equal" philosophy.

I'd love it if I got answers from both the "all arts are equal" folks and the "90% of traditional arts are bullshit" camp.

Let me have it. Ten points to the best argument, no matter if I agree with you or not.

  • Dream about house hunting with roommates?

I had a dream the other night that I was going house hunting with some new roomates I have. We were looking at huge, gorgeous houses and the dream felt very happy and upbeat.

Context: I just moved in with these roommates less than a month ago, but we're all getting along really well. Both roommates are women in their 20s, I am a guy in my 30s. We all enjoy each others company and spend about 90% of our time at home just hanging out in the living room, watching movies, listening to music or just talking.

I told them about the dream and they wanted to know what it meant. I have no idea. Do any of you?

  • How long will the army continue to use the M4? Voice your opinion for ten points.?

I actually don't give a flying **** about how long the army will use the M4, but if you're as tired as me of seeing this question here is the game: Tell me exactly what you think of me for asking this question. Vent. Best rant gets ten points.

  • My niece is vomiting blood and on her way to the hospital, but she also has blood in her tears?

She is six years old and my sister in law tells me she has blood in her tears and threw up what she estimates as a cup of bright red blood earlier in the day. She has a low grade fever and lethargy. She called me because I'm an EMT, I just told her to bring the poor kid to the ER.

Gastroenteritis is my guess for all the symptoms except for the blood in the tears. I can't find ANYTHING that suggests that as being co-morbid with any kind of stomach related condition. Anyone here seen anything like that before?

Note: I don't think its heavy bleeding from the eyes, and might only be the first few tears. Maybe dehydration or irritation of the eyes caused by her illness?

Note 2: She's already on her way (probably at) the ER, so this is just informational. She's already getting the care she needs. But from a medical standpoint I'm like "WTF?"

  • When filling out your OCONUS dream sheet, what is the best place to be stationed in Europe?

Im 68W (medic) transferring National Guard to active army. I'm looking to get stationed in Europe, where should I request? Italy? Germany? Can you request a specific base and if so which one should I request?

  • Has anyone on here ever successfully transferred from the National Guard to active duty? How did that work?

After about 20 months in and 10 months out here civilian side, I have decided to make a career out of the military. I'm an E-4 68W and currently working AGR. But I don't know that it will last and I want to make the switch to active duty. I'm a bit on the fence as to where to go next. I'm thinking about either trying to pass selection for SF and go 18D, or finishing my degree and going OCS. If I go OCS I'd loose the medical side of my job though (my degree would be in Criminal Justice, anything medical would mean starting over from scratch on the BS) and I like the medical stuff. I also like the combat side though, so 18D seems a decent fit.

But what I want from you guys is just your experiences either first or second hand about moving from guard to AD. Any tips? I've heard it's tough to do.

  • What type of release do I need for this ADSW work?

I'm in the CA ARNG and I'm looking to do a one year tour at Ft. Benning with their warrior training program (I'd be a medic for them.)

I need a release from my unit... but what kind of release? I thought it was a conditional release, but I guess that's not the right terminology. Does anyone know the answer to this? Gotta know what I'm asking for before I can approach my unit with it.

  • What do you think about the BK and DQ getting taken out of Afghanistan?

Burger King, Pizza Hut, and Dairy Queen have been removed from the major bases in Aghanistan, along with first run movies. This is part of General McChrystal's philosophy that "this is a war zone, not an amusement park." General McChrystal is also a fan of soldiers driving around in non-armored vehicles and even wants them to take their body armor off as "Afghan's do not wear body armor." (I'm dead serious, look it up.)

There are things I like about McChrystal. The man was special forces, and a Ranger. His "insurgent math" (10 insurgents + kill 2 of them = 20 insurgents) is just the reality of what we face over there. I think his hardcore-ness will be an inspiration to some (probably already hardcore) guys. I think others use stuff like a cholesterol laden whopper as an important emotional link to home. But what do you think?

  • how will I do in basic training?

I leave for Ft Benning on Monday. I've spent the last few months getting in shape, and on a 1-1-1 test I'm at 45 push ups, 50 sit ups, and a 7.5 mile. Wish I could run faster but I just haven't built up that much yet.

    Excited and nervous! particular concerns:

    1) I'm too old for this #$@! I'm 35.

    2) My back hurts like crazy if I have to stand in formation for hours (like we do at RSP. Though RSP is very disorganized.)

    3) I'm totally addicted to caffine, and I'll be withdrawling at reception. Makes me irritable as hell. Hopefully I don't haul off and kill a Drill Sgt.

Any war stories? pep talks? Talk me up here, people.

Have we become such bad parents in our fast food, TV addicted, play date restricted, over working life style that we our ruining our childrens lives by just letting them get fat right in front of our eyes?

And no, moms and dads, just because YOU are fat doesn't mean that you have to spend more time making sure that your child feels beautiful anyway. It means you have a legitimate problem as a parent and you need to be a better role model by controlling your diet, and GETTING OUTSIDE to live an active lifestyle. If you don't, why would your kids?

What are your thoughts on the root of this problem? And how do we fix it?

  • Ladies! How do I look awesome tomorrow night?

Going out with three girls (woot!) to San Francisco for a night on the town. The ladies are all dressed up and Im expected to wear a suit. Luckily, I look good in a suit. We're going to jazz clubs primarily, and my suit is black. I'm tall and athletic, caucasian with light brown hair. What color shirt and tie should I buy and should I wear a vest? Pictures of example ensembles are appreciated since I have an average sense of style for a striaght guy (ie - not much.)
