  • Starbucks barista employment: post-interview callback?

I interviewed at Starbucks on a Saturday. I was told "welcome aboard", but that I must go through a background check which would take 3-4 days. The supervisor said he/she would call me back after the results are in so that I can begin work. It is now the following Friday, and I have not yet received a call. I called in today and was told that my hiring supervisor was not there. Any thoughts? Should I continue to assume that I have this job, or is it time for me to start looking again?

  • If I win a $1 million jackpot right now, how do I make that grow?

I know nothing about how money, banking, interest, etc. works. So I'm just curious how people manage money in this type of situation.

  • Answer this question if you know NOTHING about classical music.?

You know basically nothing about classical music. But maybe you've heard of Mozart or Beethoven before. If a friend asks you to attend a symphony concert with him/her, would you go? It costs $20 by the way.

  • What is the past tense of "to cancel"?

Is it spelled canceled or cancelled? I typed both into Microsoft Word and neither is marked as spelled incorrectly. I also checked Webster's dictionary, and both spellings seem to be accepted. What do y'all think?

  • Constitutional? Healthcare versus Education?

So...the healthcare bill was recently ruled unconstitutional by the supreme court because of the provision that essentially requires everyone to have healthcare. Sounds reasonable enough; the government shouldn't force its people to do anything. But what about education? I'm not sure about the exact details of the rest of the country, but in Georgia, children ages 6-16 are REQUIRED to be enrolled in a public school, private school, or be home-schooled. Why is THAT not considered unconstitutional? It is mandating education the same way the healthcare bill mandates health insurance, isn't it?

  • Is it a good idea to ask out someone I've already known for a while?

I've known this girl for a little under a year already. We're friends and talk and see each other routinely and such (I'm a sophmore in college right now, as is she.), but is it a little late to ask her on a date?

  • What is a good beginner tennis racquet?

    Hi all.

I'm in college and am planning to take a beginning tennis class next semester. We have to provide our own tennis racquets, and I'm wondering what is a reasonable one for a beginner, having never played tennis before.

    Thanks.

  • Should all prison sentences be indefinite?

We hear about so many cases in which convicts get sentences to 150 years in prison, which seems unreasonable and simply ridiculous. Then there are life sentences, whatever that is supposed to mean. Then we have Casey Anthony who gets sentenced to 4 years, which, in reality, turns out to be a week. But let's focus on those who are in prison for too long. What happens? Overcrowding. Some people who have been sentenced 10+ years in prison for some crime such as trespassing or theft or tax fraud may already be reformed but is stuck for another 7 years. What if we were to make all prison sentences indefinite. Each inmate undergoes routine interviews and tests to determine whether a release is appropriate. Then cases like Casey Anthony (one extreme) and those sentenced to 400 years (the other extreme) can be eliminated.

  • Population control? One-child policy? Two-child policy?

As we know, China has implemented a one-child policy in an effort to control its population. I just read an article that between now and 2050, its population will remain fairly close to 1.3 billion with little change. On the other hand, India will surpass China, and the global population in 2050 will be around 9.4 billion. If the entire world were to establish a one-child policy, then if we look at China's results, it would prevent the world from overpopulating. But we also see negative side effects of the one-child policy. Parents prefer boys over girls, and this would create a gender imbalance. With only one child in the family, the parents will spoil them into little brats. What about a two child policy? This would give parents the opportunity to have one boy and one girl, yet it still helps keep the world from overpopulating. It is of course controversial in matters of human rights, but do you think it is worth it?

  • Why do multivitamins contain relatively little calcium?

When I look at the nutrition label for a given multivitamin, say Men's One-A-Day, it usually has 100% daily amount for just about everything (Vitamin B6, B12, C, Zinc, etc.). But for calcium, the amount is usually more like 30%. Why is that?

  • Girl problem...any advice?

I'm a freshman guy in college, and there's this girl I've known for about a month. Excellent personality, and I would totally ask her out. The only problem is she's already in a long-distance relationship. I think she likes me as a person and friend, but every now and then she seems a bit uncomfortable, which I can understand. I've invited her to come to a concert with me and some other friends. For now, I don't expect for us to be anything more than just good friends, but how can I make that clear to her without her feeling awkward? I don't want to have to say, "Don't worry I'm not hitting on you...". Thanks for your help.

  • What does it mean when she says "I love you"?

A girl and I have been best friends for four years (ever since 9th grade; now we're seniors). She knows that I have (or had) feelings for her, and she is dating someone else right now. We have gotten over two major fights, but in both cases we eventually found our ways back to each other. In my yearbook she wrote "P.S. I love you, I miss you already, Best Friends Forever". She has never told me "I love you" like that before although she has come close. She told me not to look at her face while I read it because she would blush. To what extent could she mean it, or could she just be trying to make me feel better?
