  • What is the probability of a particular sperm fertilising a particular egg during conception?

What I'm really asking is, "What is the probability of being 'me'?"

Out of all the sperm in my father's ejaculate and of all the ova from my mother's ovaries (hmmm let me just take a moment to clear my head of that imagery!) what is the probability that a particular pair of those gametes would meet?

  • What's that near the moon?

I'm in the UK - London to be more precise - and have spotted a very bright point near the moon between 7 and 8 o'clock if the moon were a clock face.

I'm guessing its a star, so no points for those who answer "star," but which one?

  • Would a lymph gland swell up because of multiple insect bites?

I got loads of insect bites around my left shoulder and now I have a small lump where my neck becomes the shoulder. Slightly sore when touched. Have a feeling it's a swollen lymph gland (had one before) which means I'm fighting an infection. Would the insect bites be enough to cause that kind of swelling?

  • What feature does a worm have in common with a horse?

This is a primary school (Key stage 1) question and embarrassingly I can''t answer this! What on earth is the answer? I guess it's a taxonomy question.

  • Typically, how long before reaching the shops are cut flowers harvested?

Let's say I buy a bouquet of carnations from M & S. When were they still in the ground?

  • What are your favourite movies about teamwork?

    My family has a saying:

"When it breaks down, everyone has to get out of the car and push."

What films, for you, exemplify this 'gung ho' attitude?

  • Deep voice, nineties, humming in the chorus... what song is this?

There was a song back in the nineties that I used to love ~ I guess it came out around the same time as The Connells' "74-75".

The singer had a very deep voice and the song was made up of stories about various people. I think one of them was about a girl who disappeared (I may be wrong).

Anyway, the line leading up to the chorus was something like, "Couldn't quite explain it/ it doesn't really ma...tter"

Then it went, "Hmm hmmm hmm hmmm" or "hey hey hey hey".

    What song is that?

  • Oh dear, what to buy....?

    Okay, here's the deal:

It's my 16 year old cousin's birthday in about 2 weeks. He is your typical moody teenage lad, and does sports studies at college.

The family want to get him interested in arts and culture, in order to broaden his interests, and in fact he was really quite a good artist before he chucked it all in.

We're hoping to use a birthday present to rekindle his interest in arts and culture, but what do we get him?

  • Jiminy Cricket and Scrooge McDuck both wore them...?

...but can you think of any other animal-based cartoon characters than also wore top hats?

I thought perhaps Top Cat - but it's not really a Top Hat, more of a fedora.

I have vague recollections of an animated series of Around The World In 80 Days, where one of the characters might have worn one.

Strange question, I know, but hope you can help.

  • I feel stupid even asking but...?

...when travel insurers talk about "single trip insurance policy", what does that *actually* cover?

The reason I ask is that I am going abroad, but before I get to my final destination I stop-over in another country overnight. Since they are part of the same holiday, are they covered by a single-trip policy or not?

Furthermore ~ just to make me sound even more stupid ~ does a single-trip policy cover both outbound and in-bound flights?

PS. Despite my ignorance (I am a certified fool), I do understand that policies vary between insurers, but in general, their terminology must remain constant, right?

  • For those who have trained fruit trees and shrubs......?

    Hi,

I've been reading up about training shrubs and fruit trees and some books recommend 'cracking' or 'brotting' branches ie. breaking, but not severing branches, so that when the crack heals over, the branch is in the desired position.

But how long does it take for the branches to heal, for example if the branches in question are half an inch in diameter?

  • Who was that dancer with Saira Khan last night?

On BBC2's "Saira Khan's Pakistan Adventure (episode 2)," Saira interviewed a 'khattak' dancer, who had been previously banned from dancing.

It was a very emotional interview and an emotional programme overall.

But, what was the dancer's name?

  • What wine will go with this menu?

    Starter: Salad with dressed-crab

    Main: Roast Chicken with Rosemary

    Dessert: Blueberry muffins

Would a white wine work? I usually like a good Riesling,

but I don't know anything about matching wines to food so I don't know how that would go.

  • Umbrella, ella, ella, ella?

Write the chorus of a song which uses the name of an everyday, household item then repeats parts of the word over and over.

eg. # I don't wear clothes from Primark,

Unless I go out after dark,

You can tell that I'm in style,

Just look at my Mobile, obile, ile, ile...#

OK, so mine's a poor attempt.

But, yours could make you huge amounts of money if it sells well.

  • Which London Event Should I Visit?

I'm in London on Sunday with friends. What should we go to see?

Option 1) 'Royal Academy's Summer Exhibition' ~ a massive collection of contemporary art.

Option 2) "The Ghost Train" ~ A gory, self-guided tour around the Old Operating Theatre Museum.

Option 3) "The Colours Of Our Lives" ~ Art by the child survivors of the Boxing Day Tsunami.

Option 4) "London Ratha Yatra" ~ The Festival of Chariots from Hyde Park to Trafalgar Square.

I think all of them would be good.

    But, which would YOU choose?
