  • From the Hockey Headlines #2?

This is from the from the August 1990 issue of "The Hockey News" The first paragraph was by Wayne Gretzky

"He was always the toughest defenceman I played again. I played with him in the Canada Cup and I could tell he would be a great defenceman. Whenever people ask me who the best defenceman in the NHL is, I always say it's ____________"

The following from the same article by Mario Lemiex

"I never got to play him much but when I did he was hard to get by, I don't think I ever scored a goal when he was on the ice, and I remember he knocked me down pretty good once. I know how he feels though. One of the great defencemen for sure. I hope he's not really retiring"

There are other very positive comments in the article by Steve Yzerman and Michel Goulet.

What player are they talking about?

  • From the Hockey Headlines #1?

What player is the subject of this headline (from an East Coast newspaper in the summer of 1986)

"he had some very good years for us, he's a Hall of Famer for sure, but his knee is bad, and we were able to get a solid 3rd line player who we think has 50 point potential, and what should be a good draft pick. I have no doubt that he'll play well there""

  • How much will Niemi sign for?

Dale Tallon told an Ottawa radio station this morning that the Panthers sent Niemi and his agent a contract last Thursday. Tallon cited Niemi's Stanley Cup ring, youth, and his top 5 finish in GAA along with Vokoun's unhappiness as reasons for the decision. Late in the call, he also mentioned that loaning Salak to Swedish club Farjestad last week played a role.

How much do you think the contract is for?

Do you think Niemi and his agent will have a preference for Florida since Tallon was the GM that signed him to his contract in Chicago?

  • What will you be doing in 17 years?

"NHLPA Spokesperson Jonathon Weatherdon told a NYC radio station this morning that the NHLPA has asked an arbitrator to rule on the Kovalchuk deal on the grounds that no specific rule was broken. Agents Anton Thun and Bobby Orr both stated that the NHL has yet to tell agents exactly what rule was broken and neither one of them sees anything wrong with the Kovalchuk deal. An unnamed judge in the province of Ontario (where the arbitration case will be heard) stated that he would love to hear the NHL tell him how they know exactly what Ilya Kovalchuk will be doing in 17 years because unless they can prove he won't be playing - the NHL can't win"

Sounds like the gloves are off.

So, what will you be doing in 17 years? I'll be 66, hopefully retired, and sitting on a houseboat.

  • NBC has it's dream NHL match-up?

Dick Ebersol seems to think so (and says that Canada is a no go for NBC)

Here's a transript of a phone interview that Ebersol did with the Fan 590 in Toronto a couple of days ago

Reporter: How does the NHL's Stanley Cup Finals stack up this year?

Ebersol: Great! Last year we had the best ratings in 36 years featuring the 7th largest hockey market in Detroit and the 21st largest hockey market in Pittsburgh. This year we have the 4th largest hockey market in Chicago and the 6th largest in Philadelphia. Chicago has always been a huge hockey mark for ESPN and NBC so we expect huge rewards this time around.

Reporter: How much would it have hurt if Montreal would have won?

Ebersol: It would have been very tough. The 2006 and 2007 finals were among the lowest rated finals ever. 2006 was a huge money loser for NBC and our sponsors. Our viewers aren't interested in watching Canadian teams play, and ours sponsors aren't interested in selling ad time that will only be watched in one market. That's why we have mandated that the Winter Classic be a showcase for two American teams. If the NHL wants to put a Canadian team in it, we have the right to walk away from the deal and that would trigger a payment from the NHL to NBC Universal. It is my understanding that Canadians watch the Winter Classic religiously so our Canadian broadcast partners haven't complained as far as I know.

Reporter: Do you expect to surpass last year's viewing numbers?

Ebersol: Yes. Both markets this year are larger than Detroit and Chicago is #1 and Philadelphia is #3 in our viewer ratings since the contract started.

    Reporter: Who's #2?

    Ebersol: The Rangers.

  • What do we do with imposters in the Yahoo! Hockey Section?

I noticed that we have another 'scout' from the Blackhawks on board (says a scout for 2 years)

Yet, 2 weeks ago the same person was asking about jobs in hockey because he had just come back from the military

Also, why would a current Blackhawks scout break NHL rules by posting on a public message board (it's in the CBA - check it out)

4 weeks ago he was looking for hockey leagues, you would think someone who scouts leagues would know where to find them

  • Do we still want no touch icing in the NHL?

If there was no touch icing in the NHL.................Washington doesn't tie their game against Chicago. That's why we need to keep the current icing rule the same.

  • Do we need to rethink the International Hockey Hierachy?

Since 1990, there has been 7 tournaments where the best teams have their best NHL players

1991 Canada Cup - Canada beats the USA in teh final

1996 World Cup - USA beats Canada in the final

1998 Olympics - Czech Republic beats Russia in the final

2002 Olympics - Canada beats the USA in the final

2004 World Cup - Canada beats the Czech Republic in the final

2006 Olympics - Sweden beats Finland in the final

2010 Olympics - Canada beats the USA in the final

    7 tournaments - 4 Canada/USA finals

Isn't it time we realize that it's not an accident that the USA makes it this far.....it is fast becoming the norm!

  • What's the deal about rink size?

I've seen some questions here about smaller rinks. I've recently talked to Donna Wilson of VANOC and she said that that GM Place can accomodate both sizes and that they were supposed to build a 2nd rink for UBC to replace Thunderbird Arena that could accomodate both, but halfway through the preparations, the IIHF and IOC changed plans.

    What's the deal?

    http://olympics.thestar.com/2010/article/769827--c...

CBC recently released their numbers for the 2002 game at 3.8MM but according to a friend of mine, that was the number that watched the whole game, not the average.
