  • 500GB hard drive at 7200rpm vs 640GB hard drive at 5400rpm, for same price.?

I'm looking to get an HP laptop, which qualifies for a free HD upgrade from the 500 to 640GB one. I am gaining 140GB of storage space, but losing 1800rpm. Assuming that all other specs are the same, which one would you recommend? Also how much of a performance difference/ battery life difference are the two speeds really? If this helps, my laptop has 6GB of DDR3 RAM and an AMD Phenom II X4 N930 quad core CPU and 512MB graphics card.

  • Avira heuristics set to high but log says medium?

I have Avira Antivir Personal Edition (free) 9, and I have set the heuristics to high for both the scans and the guard, plus I have macrovirus heuristics on, but when I do a full system scan, the heuristics go back to medium, although all other scans keep heuristics at high. Any ideas?

  • What are some free firewalls for 64 bit Vista?

I know that Comodo has a 64 bit version, but I feel it alerts you way too much and although I'm OK with that, my family is very bad with computers and never know what to do when 30 alerts pop up when trying to install a program.

  • Is the Malwarebytes' I have 32 bit?

I just got a new Dell Inspiron 537 with Windows Vista Home Premium 64 bit, and I also downloaded the newest version of Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware (1.38). This version is 64bit native. I got it from here http://download.cnet.com/Malwarebytes-Anti-Malware... It runs smoothly and very fast, but that's what is concerning me. It runs a quick scan in under 3 minutes most of the time. Does that mean that it is only scanning 32 bit files or something, which would explain why it is so quick, or is it just because the computer is new and is fast (Core 2 Duo and 4GB RAM)? Also in task manager it says mbam.exe *32. Does this mean that I am running the 32 bit version? Also does this mean that it is skipping over most files or am I OK? If I do indeed have the 32 bit version, how do I get the 64 bit one? I assumed that the download would automatically get the 64 bit one?

    Thanks.

  • Where is the best place to get a new Desktop PC?

I'm looking for a PC (not Mac or Linux), so in everyone's opinion, where is the best place (online or store) to buy a good PC in terms of price, reputability, satisfaction, selection and price. I am buying one, not building one.

Currently I'm looking at Newegg.com, Amazon.com, Best Buy store and Walmart.

  • Help! McAfee is Self Destructing?

Hi I have McAfee Internet Security and just today the icon in the system tray for updating was taking forever. So I clicked on the security status and it turned red, with everything saying that I am not protected and that action is required for every single thing. When I click fix, it says that it can't be fixed because one or more problems require my response. In the box that says your problems, it says that some of the components are missing, and to please reinstall McAfee Security Center. So I tried using the McAfee Virtual Technician, and it said that it encountered a fatal error (the technition that is) and 2 seconds later a popup from McAfee comes up saying that it blocked the Puper trojan. I assumed that it was a false positive and checked quarantine (restore). In it there were over 10 viruses which McAfee claimed to be trojans and they were all from today. Looking at them, 4 are .dll from System32 and 3 are .dll from Firefox. All the others were McAfee files. So I restored everything, confident that these were false positives. After restoring the files, McAfee turned green and said that I was protected. After this I updated to see what was wrong, and sure enough McAfee prevented all updates and flagged all of them as trojans and now the security is red again. Does anyone have any idea how to either fix the problem, know why this is happening or know wtf caused this stuff? And please don't say remove McAfee and get a free one, because I'm going to get Avira in 6 months when this runs out. So basically its quarantining its own files and destroying itself, plus firefox, and I fear that it might cause a BSOD if it is removing system files. Could it possibly be a terrible update patch?

  • Firefox Add-on Dangerous?

On one of our computers I was looking up our Ad-ons and saw the usual WOT, Adblock Plus, IE Tab etc, but one caught my attention. It was just called Extension 1.27. I thought that it was strange, but didn't uninstall it, since I figured it would be a Java thing or a MS Network Assistant, since those are added without your consent anyway. So I left it, and for the past 2 days a new window will randomly popup from itsabove.com.videos. So I uninstalled this add-on, ran antivirus and antispyware scans (which all found nothing) and the pop ups stopped. My question is first of all, wtf is this add-on, and how did it get on? Was it dangerous? Why can't I find anything on Google if it comes up as a recommended search when I only type "ex" in

  • Confusing but good Hard Drive problem?

I have Vista Home Premium on my 1.5 year old Toshiba Laptop with a 147GB HDD after formatting. Before the Service Pack 2 Upgrade which I did last night, my HDD said that it had 87GB free, which I thought was very low, seeing as I only have 10GB of pictures, no music (which is on my desktop) and I use CCleaner for temporary files. Today however, the HDD in the Computer menu says 102GB free, 15GB more! This is more around where I thought my HDD space would be. Does anyone have any idea why that much was changed? Did it uninstall SP1 which was 15GB, or did it fix an error in which the HDD stated its free space incorrectly?

  • 32 bit Vista max memory question?

I know that with the 32 bit Vista Home Premium, which is what I have, the maximum memory it can use is 4GB. I also know that this includes RAM (I have 2GB of RAM) and Graphics Memory (I have 256MB). So the total is 2.256GB of memory. My question is if there is any other thing which counts towards this 4GB of maximum memory? Also does virtual memory from the HDD count? And what about Readyboost since I am using a 2GB SD card for Readyboost? If neither of these count, and the total memory is just RAM + GPU memory than I might upgrade either my graphics card or RAM.

  • Do computers have a max amount of graphics memory accepted?

I am wondering if I install a 1GB graphics card, will this be too much for a 3 yr old computer running on XP to handle? If it is too much, would the computer only recognize like 512MB or whatever, or would the graphics card be rendered unusable?

  • Yahoo Answers not from where I live?

Whenever I log into Yahoo Answers, the logo in the upper left hand corner of the screen says Yahoo Answers UK & Ireland, yet I am from New York. I checked my account settings, and my town, state and country are all right (US in UK). Does anyone know why it thinks I'm from the UK?

  • PC graphics card bad problem?

I just opened up our 2.5 year old HP Pavilion desktop to clean out all the dust since it was clogging the fans and was running hot and loud. However, when I put the PC back together, I turned it on, and the monitor didn't show any image. The VGA monitor was already on, so when I turned on the PC, the monitor didn't show anything, and then went to sleep saying no input signal first. At first I thought that the monitor might be messed up, so I tried the monitor on my other computer and it worked fine. Just to be sure, I tried my other VGA monitor on my HP desktop, and sure enough, the other monitor didn't work on it, yet both monitors worked fine on my other computer.

So next, I played around with the VGA cord, plugging it into the back of the computer in different ways and harder or not as far in, then hooking it up while the computer was running and then before I turned it on. Nothing worked. Also the VGA input is attached to the motherboard, so I can't take it out and put it back in.

Any suggestions or people who have had the same problem and fixed it? I really don't want to spend money on a graphics card.

    Thanks,

    James

  • Should I disable Defense+ on Comodo Firewall?

The Network Defense protects as a normal firewall does, but I feel that the Defense+ portion has way too many alerts when I do just about anything. As I've used it, the alerts have steadily decreased but its still annoying. Also it has auto blocked things from good programs like Avira, Super Antispyware and Malwarebytes. Is it blocking functions of these programs which it shouldn't be? Also how do I prevent it from ever blocking good processes like these antivirus/malware? And is Defense+ a very important part of the firewall, or is the traditional part of the firewall (Network Defense) enough? Also is there a way to prevent it from popping up so often and randomly blocking stuff?

  • Suspected Anti-virus False Positive?

Our Norton subscription just ran out a month ago so we switched to Avira Antivir Personal. Its detection rates blow Norton's out of the water. However, when I did a full system scan with our external hard drive which we used to back up our computer while with Norton, It detected 22 Viruses and Unwanted programs and put them in quarantine. After a week and confirming that they were legit malware, I removed 21 of the malware from quarantine. However I currently am keeping one piece of suspected malware from the external HD which is a Program file from my other computer also backed up on the same external HD. I think its a false positive but I'm not positive and don't want to delete a good file, but want it out of quarantine. Avira says it's the TR/ATRAPS.Gen Trojan. Here is the file name and location....

    F:/Seagate Backup/AUSSIE/C/Program Files/Dell Media Experience/CLAlbumArt.dll

I've already sent it to Avira as a suspected file, but does this seem like a good file or a virus? If so what course of action do you recommend? Thanks

  • Lawn mower problem with pull cord?

Hi I have a push Craftsman lawn mower from 4 to 6 years ago, and when I pull the cord to start it, about 1 in every 4 times, the mower will yank it back. This doesn't seem problematic, but I've had to learn to pull the cord with my hand and arm, instead of using my shoulder as well to turn and get more power. My brother uses his shoulders to aide in starting the mower, and when the mower yanks it back, it pulls his shoulder forward, and can throw out his arm. Now he is too scared to start it and has to rely on me to start it every time which is a pain. I don't have the problem of throwing out or potentially hurting my shoulder cause when I pull it using only my hand and arm, and the mower jolts the cord back, my arm just makes a punching motion instead of a whole arm and shoulder turning motion.

  • Sending False Positive to Avira?

I have Avira AntiVir, and after scanning an external HD with a couple hundred GB of data, it found 22 viruses, but also found a false positive. If I submit it to Avira as a suspected FP will they automatically fix the FP problem, and if so, will it get taken out of quarantine?

    Thanks
