To what degree do you believe your given name has influenced who you are?
Do you believe people would treat you differently if your name were Jack as opposed to Ted, for example, or Sarah as compared with Mary? How much does a name define who we are? I think it's safe to say that some names (e.g. Adolph, Osama) are so infamous that they stereotype everyone else who bears that name.
People whom I've met briefly and then not seen again for days or weeks have mistakenly called me Michael, but I have two cousins named Michael and they look nothing alike nor anything like me. My name is T------. Also, while I have a Spanish surname, it's NOT Martinez, yet I've been called "Mr. Martinez" more than I can remember. For the record, my last name begins with an "H" and ends with a "z." I cannot explain this occurrence, but it's happened so often that I've come to expect it when meeting people.

Today is my birthday, but when I looked into the bathroom mirror this morning I didn't see the man I am but the boy I wish to be. I think aging is often about perception. On my daily run this afternoon, a young woman in a car called out to me for directions. She said, "Excuse me, sir, can you tell me how to get to Wadsworth?" I ran alongside her for a while and told her what she had to do to get where she wanted to go. As she sped away I thought, did she call me "sir" simply to be polite or because she perceived me to be so much older than she is. I'm a kid at heart and I think it's that attitude that keeps me young. I don't think I look my age but I sometimes wonder how old people, especially young people, think I am.
