  • Why is it not possible to prosecute posthumously?

Why does the British Criminal Justice System not permit the posthumous prosecution of criminals. They can be pardoned posthumously, but not prosecuted.

If the Crown Prosecution Service is of the view that they would have prosecuted (ie, in the public interest and sufficient evidence etc) had the perpetrator still been alive, why is no prosecution allowed? (I understand that they cannot defend themselves, but surely mechanisms can be put in place to handle that that?)

Surely, people are pardoned to set a record books right, on the flip side, we should prosecute if they are dead for the same reason, to record in history that they have wronged.

Alternatively, if posthumous prosecution is not an option, then should we cease pardoning people posthumously?

  • Do I need to complete a tax UK rreturn form?

I live in the UK and pay Income Tax and National Insurance, deducted at source by my employers through the PAYE system. In addition, I have company car, for which additional Income Tax is deducted through the PAYE system.

I do not have a company fuel card/credit card and my employers do not provide for private use, I record my business miles each month and my employers pay a rate per mile (as published by HMRC) of 19p/mile, this is paid each month, in arrears as expensese.

Due to the mileage that I cover, the total annual amount of these mileage expenses exceeds GBP4,000, should I therefore need to complete an annual tax return.

    Thanks in advance,

  • How to address a Knight of the Realm, Sir Firstname or Sir Surname?

I have to visit a home of a Knight of the Real in England, I will not disclose his name, but for arguments sake, we will call him John Smith, there is chance I will meet the person himself or at least advise someone that I am here to carry out job xyz for him.

My question therefore is; do I say Sir John or Sir Smith? I am there on a professional basis and have not met or corresponded with the person myself at any time previously.

  • Why diagnose Aspergers?

Hi, I live in the UK.

I am in my mid 30's. My brother is dating a girl who's son has been diagnosed with Aspergers, and he has since wondered on more than one occasion if I have Aspergers to a much less degree.

I live with my girlfriend of six years, hold down a job with a salary package of around £25,000, so any Aspergers I have is presumably slight, is therefore any benefit to me in being tested, and what does the test involve? Can it be treated, if so what is the treatment?

Brother also mentioned that I may also qualify for the lowest rate of disability living allowance, can anyone comment on this, please.

    Thank you in advance!

  • Are there 4mm plugs on wharfedale diamond 9.0 speakers?

Pretty much as the question suggests, I have some £18/metre speaker cable that were used with old speakers, the 4mm banana plugs are good and soldered to the cable. To make things worse, the cable is flat rigid copper ribbon style and will not be suitable for being wrapped around binding posts, and I do not want to take the 4mm plugs off the cables, so I would like to know if the above speakers have 4mm sockets at the rear?

    Thanks in advance!

  • Mail order error? Goods delivered that I did not order/pay for?

A well known UK mail order company have sent about £60 worth of products to my address.

I did not order and have never ordered from this company previously, I have simply requested a catalogue in the past.

Last Friday the goods were left on my door step, addressed to me. Upon opening the package, I was confused as the invoice stated that the account had been paid with visa card, but not my card (only last 4 digits on invoice).

I called the company twice the next day and after establishing the surname of the card holder and it was no-one I know, requested that they collect the items. They then advised that they were just two of six packages. They asked me to take them to their trade counter, but I told them I was not doing that, they will have to collect the goods.

They were due for collection yesterday, and so far have not been collected.

I don't want these items, but damned if I am going to waste much more time for them to sort it out. When can i claim ownership of the items?

  • Open Source Equivalent of Nero (for Windows)?

My Dell PC came bundled with Roxio, which quite frankly is rubbish. When I try to use it says another user is using the application. However, when I switch user, the other user is not using the application. I have used Nero previously and preferred it to Roxio. Can anyone recommend a decent Open Source equivalent application so that will allow me to rip from CDA to mp3, rather than WMA format and also allow me to burn from MP3 to CDA, and to MP3 CD.

    Thanks in advance.

  • Open Source defect/bug tracking?

I am on secondment to my company IT team, responsible for defect triage and admin of a web based bug tracking dB, Bug Host Pro (www.bughost.com), while this is effective & easy to manage for the most of the time, it is costly (approx GBP400/month).

I am keen in the use of Open Source where possible, my employers are not. I am sure that there are plenty of open source defect tracking applications out there, can anyone recommend something that has similiar functionality to BH. We are need to allow external parties access to the system and would prefer a web based application with minimal installation work. Any tips would be helpfull, I would like to use my own webspace to create an example and then write my proposal, I can write the business paper, but need assistance installing the application on a web page.

Thanks in advance of any advice offered.

  • Belkin F5D7230uk4 with Virgin Cable Broadband?

I have just purchased a Belkin F5D7230uk4 cable broadband wireless router.

I am running Windows 98SE and when running through the "Easy Set Up" routine that is bundled on the disc, it gets to the point where it tries to establish the presence of the router then says there is a problem.

The modem is powered up, the on the router panel, the modem led is blinking, the power light is on, the port that the ethernet cable to my pc network card is lit up. Yet when I type the IP address stated in the manual into a browser to manually configure the router, 192.168.2.1 but the browser does not find the router.

Can anyone offer a solution, or a idiots guide to setting up the router with Virgin Cable Broadband and Windows 98SE.

    Thanks in advance.

I have Virgin + cable box, which comes with a 160gb HDD. There is an option to copy from the HDD to DVD or VCR, not wanting to us a VCR as the idea is ancient technology, can I use the DVD writer on my pc to copy programmes, and if so how is the best way to do it... The cable box has a USB output at the rear and RJ45 network port, which is quicker and do I need any particular software on my PC, (I am running Win98SE).

  • Broadband Speeds?

I have a Virgin cable broad band service (formerly Telewest). The service I have signed up for is up to 20Mb speed. I live in a suburb of Bristol (UK), not out in the sticks, the cable box I believe is about 20 feet from my gate, so I believe, it is co-axial cable to there, then fibre-optic. There are various websites that claim to be able to test the speed of your service, but they seem to return different results, even when run immediately after each other.

    For example:

    http://www.top10-broadband.co.uk/speedtest

Says Download of 5.39Mb and Upload of 0.68Mb

    http://www.ip-adress.com/speedtest/

Says Download of 2.0Mb and Upload of 0.70Mb

The upload is similar, but why is there such a discrepancy on Download and what tips can you offer on Improving this and is it worth complaining to my ISP about the slow speeds, compared to what my tariff is supposed to provide?
