  • Why do we owe China money?

Excuse my ignorance, but it's still not clear to me. The weight of the reasoning seems to fall on us consumers who are buying things made in China, as if we should buy American so as to offset the U.S deficit with China. The trade between the two countries has hovered at a 5 to 1 exchange ratio, although the amount being traded annually has increased 3 fold. So even though we buy their stuff 5 times more than they buy ours, we still are selling them 3 more times stuff today than we did 10 years ago; from 16.3 to 70 billion today.

My question is: if I pay $200 cash for an HD dvd player at Walmart, who pays $80 a piece for them since they bought a boat load of them, don't they send China's share to China? I pay Walmart, Walmart pays the Chinese manufacturer. Done deal right? Walmart doesn't say, "Hey, I pay you later. Put it on my tab." Do they?

So what U.S. debt is China financing? Is it the U.S. government that's borrowing? For what? We pay plenty of taxes, is it not enough?

Why are the consumers made to feel responsible for this debt?
