  • The shoot of my orchid is brown at the tip, is it dying?

I have this phalaenopsis orchid, I got it when it was in flower and a few weeks ago it stopped flowering. All fine and well, but since then, the tip of the shoot has gone all brown and shrivelled. But it's not brittle, I can bend it and it doesn't snap off. Is it dying? What should I do? Does it need watered more? At the moment I'm watering it once a week by sitting the pot in water overnight, then draining it in the morning. I bought some baby bio orchid food and gave it some of that last night, not sure if it'll work yet... I want it to live and flower more so any advice would be much appreciated :)

  • Questions about how to look after my orchid (phalaenopsis)?

I bought an orchid a few days ago, and I asked the shopkeeper some questions about how to care for it, but when she explained, she seemed to assume I already knew some things about keeping plants, I don't know a thing about how to care for them, so she left me with questions!

I've been watering it every three days in the evening, leaving it overnight, and then draining the excess water in the morning, to stop its roots from rotting. I've been keeping it in my bedroom, which is usually quite warm because I spend most of my time in here, and fairly humid because it's small, sealed off and I do a lot of breathing in here! And I'm keeping it about a metre away from the window, where there is ambient sunlight, but the sun isn't directly cast onto it. I was also told to feed it once a month with half-strength house plant fertiliser.

    My questions are, though -

    1. When it isn't flowering, do I still water and feed it with the same regularity? Does is still need to be at the same temperature and light levels?

    2. When it isn't flowering, should I cut the tip off to encourage is to grow more flowers?

    Thanks in advance :)

  • Can anyone be good at yoga or do you need a certain body?

I watched an amazing video today on BBC News Online of people doing incredible yoga positions. Like they did one where their body was folded at the hips, and their stomach, chest and head were lying flat against their legs. If I try to do that, I can hardly even touch my toes for more than a few seconds!

My question is, can any able-bodied person get that proficient at yoga if they just persevere and practice? Or do you have to have a certain natural flexibility?

(In case it matters, I'm 18, female, about 5'4 and a little over 8 stone - so, skinny. I'm fairly fit, but don't have great muscle strength at the moment.)

  • Is it possible to have dual citizenship for saudi arabia and britain?

I tried to find this out by reading the dual citizenship article on wikipedia, but it got very convoluted, so I'm hoping to find someone who just knows. If someone has a father who is a british citizen, married to his mother, who is a national of saudi arabia, is it possible for him to be a citizen of both countries? In case it's relevant - he was born in saudi arabia, lived there for a couple of years, then lived in Britain for a few years, then moved back to saudi arabia and stayed there.

  • Statistics/info about people being executed by their state authorities for same-sex sexual activity?

I've been searching online for a few hours now for some recent examples of LGB people being executed by their state authorities... Turns out, despite the fact that human rights experts are saying that "more than 4,000 gay men and lesbians have been executed in Iran since the Ayatollahs seized power there in 1979", any actual examples are very difficult to come by. If anybody has any specific examples from the last few years, that would be great. The more recent the better. Not just in Iran, but in any of the countries where people are still being executed for homosexual behaviour. I need some specifics fairly quickly, though, so any information would be great, I'm not too fussy at this point! I can only assume I must be looking in the wrong places...

(For anyone who's wondering - This is for a flyer I'm producing for my university's LGBT welfare organisation, promoting a very worthy campaign called Love Without Borders, which you can read more about here if anyone is interested - http://www.nus.org.uk/en/Campaigns/LGBT/Love-witho...

  • Book of diagnostic criteria for psychological disorders?

I'm currently studying psychology at A level and will be doing a degree in it next year, so I'm dong some reading to prepare myself for the degree course... I was thinking that a good one to have would be a book of diagnostic criteria, but the thing is, I don't know what the official book is in the UK. I've heard of the DSM, but I'm led to believe that is the American version, is that correct? What is the British equivalent, and what's the latest version that will be useful for an undergraduate? Thanks very much in advance =)

  • What on earth is going on with Russia??

Ok, a little facetious, but bear with me :P I just don't understand the political climate there and how it relates to ours. Just every now and again I see a story popping up in the news basically amounting to "Russia has done something weird". O_o

Like, a while ago, they sent ten gerbils into space for 12 days. Then, a few days later, I hear that the government announced baby conception day or something and decided to give people prizes if they had babies nine months from then.

And they sent some planes into Scotland, and Scotland just said "Oh, go home", so they did!

And then, they decided to just claim the Arctic seabed. This takes the biscuit really. WHAT are they going to DO with the Arctic seabed? What possible use does that have for them?!

And this is all in the space of maybe ten days? It's like they've collectively come down with some form of dementia and are just wandering around in a vaguely confused manner. I'd be very grateful if something could clear this up for me!

  • In which museums or art galleries in England can I see some masks?

I'm not fussy really, I just need to see some masks for my art A level project. North or especially Northeast England would be most appreciated, but any ideas you have really, I can get on a train. :P Any sorts of masks or disguises from any culture, modern of antique, would be appreciated, but especially where there is a collection from a certain culture, by a certain artist, or based around a certain theme. Thanks in advance!

  • What would happen if we had three moons?

Anything you can be bothered to write about, please! Tides, eclipses, anything that would be different from how we are with just one moon. Thank you very much :)

  • What would happen if the orbit of the Earth around the sun was circular?

Ok, I have another hypothetical orbit-related question, I do apologise, heh. Assuming all other factors were the same, what would happen if the orbit of the Earth around the sun was circular rather than elliptical? Thanks!

  • What would happen if the world was on an 180 angle to its orbit of the Sun?

Ok, to clarify... The imaginary line between the north and south pole around which the world turns is, obviously, directly vertical (that is, at a right angle to its path of orbit around the Sun, if you visualise one of those solar system map things that you see in science textbooks etc).

What would happen if it was in fact 'vertical', so that when it orbited, all areas of the planet would be at a constant distance from the Sun at different times of year? Would seasons be eliminated? Would the equinox effect be eliminated? Would anything else happen?

Thanks very much if you can help me with this =)

  • If I am given an offer by Oxbridge, do I have to go?

    Well, it's like this... My grades are at AAAB at the moment, hopefully will leave with AAAA after A2. I wasn't going to apply to Oxbridge, simply because I find it completely intimidating and I'm not sure if I'd fit there, being from one of the least reputable state schools that exists... however, I was uncomfortable with the fact that I didn't want to apply because I was scared, so I'm going to apply mostly to prove to myself that I can. I'm not confident at all about being given and offer, but in the hypothetical situation that I am... Do I have to accept it? It's just that I really want to prove I'm not scared to do it and see if I'm capable of doing it, but I'm not sure if I actually want to go... xD;

  • Volunteer Charity Work in North-east England?

I'm looking for volunteer work I can do for charities in the North East of England. I'm in full-time education, but am willing to spend weekends and/or time after school doing volunteer work. There are a couple of problems though - I'm not 18 yet, only 17, I have a feeling that might be a limiting factor. Also, in autumn 2008 I'll be moving away to go to university, so it needs to be a position that either I can leave at that point, or continue from a different part of England. Does anybody have any ideas for charities or specific volunteer work I could do? Thank you!

  • Laura Greenwood the actress?

A talented, graceful and beautiful actress - but unfortunately nearly unheard of! She's been in Prime Suspect, Walk Away and I Stumble, V for Vendetta, and the Brothers Grimm. Does anybody have any other information about her? Does anybody have an address I can send fanmail to? I can hardly find anything about her on the Internet.

  • What was the attitude towards incest around the 14th century?

What would people think at the time if a brother and a sister from a fairly affluent family had a kid during/around the 14th century? Would this be very unusual?

  • About applying for Durham University (in the UK) and the various colleges?

Ok, so I'm currently doing my A levels and thinking about which uni to apply to for my psychology degree. I'm expecting AAA or at least AAB in biology, psychology and English lit, with similarly graded AS levels in religious studies, art, and various other qualifications as supplements. I also have my A-grade maths GCSE and other such necessary psychology things. :)

I'm wondering about applying to Durham as probably my first choice, and I would like to know more about it. Specifically, what is the difference between the colleges? I would like more info about these so I know which I will be happiest in, and which will be best for a psychology student. Anything else you would like to tell me about Durham uni (especially about the psychology they do there) would be very much appreciated. Thank you!

  • The music on BBC 1's Five Days?

There is a beautiful song that keeps playing in the current BBC One series Five Days... Sung by a female vocalist (reminds me of Emiliana Torrini - similar sound to her voice in Gollum's Song from the Lord of the Rings soundtrack, if anybody knows it), but the lyrics are foreign so I can't search them to find out what the song is! So, can anybody who's watching the series identify it?

Or, if you're in Britain and watching TV tonight (Feb 01) between 9-10PM, perhaps you could try switching over to BBC 1 during a advert break and see if you catch the song I mean?

If anybody can provide me with the name of the artist and song, I would be very very grateful! Thank you!

  • Heaven and Hell in Medieval art?

For an art project on 'fear' I'm doing a modern-day variation of medieval art where heaven and hell is represented - in my paintings, rather than saints, celebrities and the like will wear the haloes, while images of starvation and aids will be in hell. I'm sorry if any Christian people think this is blaspemous or whatever, but that's really not the point I'm making - the idea of the project is to highlight the mindset of many people nowadays and how shallow the ideals of much of the world has become while real problems await the apparently condemned millions.

Anyway, what I need from anybody who knows this well are some medieval artists and pieces that show the traditional murals featuring heaven, hell, purgatory, earth, or all of them, in any way that might be useful to me. It would be especailly great if I can look at it on the Internet, look at it in a book, or especially if they are in Northern England so I can visit them. Many many thanks and eternal gratitude in advance!

  • How do you pronounce "Tahmores"?

How do you pronounce the boy's name "Tahmores"?

Also, the final word as it were on the meaning of the name would be great... most sites I go to seem to say it means "wild dog" or something along those lines. Does anybody who's in the know want to confirm that? =)
