  • Can I calculate the density of water from Temperature only?

I need to create a cross-section based on a current cross-section which has Isotherms on it. I'm currently thinking I need to decide which direction the sea-surface slope is and thereby sketching in my Isobars. I need to draw on the Isopycnals (density) so am I correct in thinking if the Isotherms slope upwards to the right, the sea-surface slopes up to the left (decreasing temp = increasing density) so Isobars slope up to the left and hence the Isopycnals slope up to the right along with the Isotherms?

If I'm on the right lines is it possible to calculate the pressure or density at each point from only the Isotherm values?

  • Why does the energy between the walls infinite potential well have to be zero?

That's it really! I understand what happens and the maths but I can't grasp this little bit, I'm sure it's straightforward. I understand it is zero at the walls for boundary conditions but why MUST it be non-zero in between, i.e. the particle can't be at rest....?

  • Should Council Tax be reduced for Open University students?

Students attending 21 hrs a week at face-to-face universities are exempt from council tax. If in a couple their partner can claim the 25% discount for a single occupancy.

Open University students NORMALLY study part-time (<90pts + <21hrs). Some however study full-time (90pts + >21hrs or 120pts + >30hrs). Many of these full-time students have children and have reduced their working hours to part-time or left employment to improve their employment prospects. Most F2F students have no responsibilities and little outgoings.

Is it fair that the F2F student is entitled to the discount/exemption whilst the OU student is not?

Bear in mind Student Finance pay out a tuition fee loan to OU students to cover their course the same as any other university.

  • How long does it take to investigate a benefit fraud claim?

I've recieved a summons with my partner for an interview under caution. We've both been working and living together since December 2010 with joint claims but because of various things it may look dodgy for the 6 months previously as my partner was all over the place and wasn't living here. At most I'd assume they think we've claimed £7000 between us too much but probably less.

How long have they likely been investigating this? We've just got the letters in June so the period they're looking at must be over 8 months ago, are they likely to have been looking into this for a whole 12 months or is it more likley a retrospective thing starting 6 months ago or less?

I don't understand why they haven't come forward sooner with all this, why wait 6 months there'll be no extra info available!?

  • Does anyone know where I can find the number of commercial flights per day from Naples?

I need to find out how many fly per day on average. I also need to find a map of flight paths if possible, or if not, a list of the airports flown to from/to Naples. It's for a geoscience project so I need an official website/paper to reference any information from.

  • Is it possible for my fiance to learn manners?

An odd question but my family (usually very laid back) really dislike my fiance due to his lack of manners/etiquette. We have very different backgrounds; him a broken home all on benefits living in a council estate in a city, me in a country village with very happy childhood and stable family.

He gets worked up by little pointless things, makes abrupt demands loudly rather than asking nicely, raises his voice or shouts at our daughter when he thinks she's playing us, sits upstairs most of the day when we stay at my mum's... it goes on! I really don't know what to do as my family are very important to me and rarely get upset but this is doing it!

He says they should accept who he is, they don't mind him per se it's his lack of manners, lack of practical help at home, lack of playing with the kids and shouting or raising his voice to them and telling them off too often.

  • I need help with wedding guest list planning, can you help?

I'm getting married this year but am a little stuck on the guest list. It's going to be family and VERY close friends at the ceremony and meal but I would like to invite more people to the reception which I understand is normal.

The thing I'm stuck with is I have several friends I'm close to but can't afford to invite to the main event so I would like to invite them to the reception party. The problem is they live quite a long distance away, I'm talking 100-200 miles away. I'm worried it would be rude to just invite them all that way for the after party... is it normal to end up doing that?

  • What is your opinion on the following results of the UK benefit and housing benefit cap?

Note: The main benefit cap is £500pw (£26,000pa) and will NOT include DLA, Working Tax Credit or War Widows Pension but does include council tax benefit and may include housing benefit. The Housing Benefit cap will also seperately be limited to £400pw maximum.

    OVERALL SUMMARY

If the benefit cap EXCLUDES Housing Benefit the info below basically states the benefit system will pay enough to support a family with up to 6 children living anywhere in the UK except Inner or Central London.

If the benefit cap INCLUDES Housing Benefit the info below basically states the benefit system will only pay enough income to support fully a family with up to 3 children living in a 3 bedroom property.

    SUMMARY

If the £500pw cap EXCLUDES Housing Benefit this will only mean those wishing to remain in Central or Inner London need to pay a substantial rent top up. Those outside these areas will not be affected at all regardless of family size.

If the £500 cap INCLUDES Housing Benefit those with 5 children or more would be required to pay a substantial rent top up from their other benefits in almost all areas of the UK to remain in a 4 bedroom property or accept they need to move to a 3 bedroom property and still most likely pay part of their rent as a top up from their other benefits.

Those with 4 children will need to accept they are unable to live in the more affluent areas of the UK such as Oxford, Cambridge or London or be willing to pay a rent top up from their other benefits.

Those with 3 children will be able to comfortably live in most areas of the UK and recieve full Housing Benefit but would need to pay a rent top up from their other benefits to live in London.

    BREAKDOWN!

£450pw (Single, 18+, 6 Children, Not Working) including CHB, CTC, IS and Council Tax Benefit. It's about £470pw total for a couple.

With 6 children you are entitled to a 4 bedroom house, this has a weekly rent of £300pw (Outer London) or £230pw (Bristol) Local Housing Allowance. This is the max the council will currently pay and is based on an area's average rent.

If the cap INCLUDES housing benefit: Under the above circumstances you could only claim enough Housing Benefit to cover £50pw Housing Benefit for a single person or £30pw for a couple. This means they would not be able to live in a 4 bedroom house unless they covered the rent top up from their other benefits.

A 3 bed house has an LHA of £165pw (Bristol) or £250pw (London), if you have 4 children you get £340pw total benefits which would almost leave enough of the "cap" in total benefit for Housing Benefit to cover a 3 bed house in Bristol but if someone wanted to remain in Outer London, Oxford or other affluent areas of the UK they would need to pay a rent top up of up to £100pw out of they're other benefits.

If you only had 3 children you could easily be entitled to enough HB to cover a 3 bed house in Bristol and anywhere else in the UK including Cambridge/Oxford but if you wanted to live in Outer London you would need to cover rent top up out of your other benefits.

If the cap EXCLUDES housing benefit: By capping UK Housing Benefit to £280pm (1 bed) and £400pm (4+ beds) this will prevent people on low or zero income living in the following areas: Central London (e.g. Westminster), Inner London (out to Richmond/Hendon/Tottenham/Bromley/Wimbledon) and Outer SW London (e.g. Richmond/Kew). There are no other areas which have LHA rates higher than the new limits so no one living outside these areas will be affected by the £500pw benefit cap unless they have at least 7 children.

  • Does the £500pw benefit cap in the UK include housing benefit + council tax benefit?

The cap doesn't include WTC, War Widows Pension or DLA at the moment. Does the £500pw include your housing benefit AND council tax benefit, one or neither?

  • within UK welfare reform, what do you think of the following idea being proposed?

Suggestion: Rather than making “voluntary” work compulsory, increase the pressure to return to paid employment and allocate jobs to job seekers once they have reached 12 months on JSA.

Reason: There are jobs but many people in the UK have little work ethic and find reasons not to apply for them. Often employers take several advertising attempts to fill their vacancies with those who have suitable skills.

Method: A solution to these problems would be to introduce compulsory employment after someone has been on JSA for 12 months (including rapid reclaim periods and periods between claims when out of employment to avoid loopholes). This could be done through a skills analysis upon applying for JSA, the name and skills could then be saved on a national database alongside the locations they would be willing to work (and an area up to 1hr bus ride in each direction). Employers could then submit their vacancies to the jobcentre with the relevant skills selected if they are unable to get suitable uptake from normal advertising and jobcentre applicants. An incentive for employers may be necessary but more research would need to be carried out.

Those who have been on JSA for 12 months or more could be allocated one of these jobs based on their skills. If, when someone reached their 12 month mark, there were no jobs relevant to their skills they could be allocated a no (or low) skilled job. There is no reason to stop looking for better employment whilst working and someone will be more inclined to take a better job once working at a low skilled job.

An important part of this would be the conditionality. This system would only work if those who failed to meet the conditions were actively and aggressively sanctioned and if the skills analysis was done accurately. Examples of sanction conditions could be the following:

    • Refusing the job allocated

    • Failing to turn up to work

    • Dismissed from the position for any reason (not just gross misconduct, if someone fails to arrive on time, meet the dress code etc. following encouragement from the employer they would either be attempting to get dismissed or do not require the income)

    • Leave the position voluntarily for any reason (if the position is allocated within the correct distance and at the correct skill level, i.e. they are capable of doing the job, there should be no reason to leave employment)

  • How much income do you need for a £100k mortgage?

Me and my partner have a combined income of about £20k but we also get tax credits of about £5000 a year. Are we likely to ever be able to afford to buy a house??

  • Business Consultancy/Advice?

Does anyone work as a business consultant either as a small business or on behalf of a larger company?

I'm debating working in the field as I constantly get asked advice and believe the advice I give is good. I'm debating whether small business owners would be interested (and of course interested in paying!) for such advice from someone with experience... what is your opinion?

I'm also not sure where to start as it's one of those businesses that until you have given advice that has been useful you have no reputation to back you up. More ideas?!

  • If a booking goes wrong and is cancelled due to an error on my part, do i legally have to give compensation?

we take bookings in advance with a £50 deposit. if something ever went wrong and a booking was cancelled either at short notice or after the arranged start time would i be legally obliged to offer compensation and if so would it matter if it were in either cash or goods?

So far nothing has happened but i've had a close call! This is not a matter of a "goodwill gesture" to keep decent feedback, more for future reference on the legal side.

  • Can you help with Myspace profile html?

This is my profile: www.myspace.com/polefitnesschampionships and the whole profile is pretty much as I want it except that I would like to do one or both of the following:

    1) widen the other boxes on the left to the same width as the url box

    2) narrow the gap between the general heading (or remove it altogether) by moving the text inside the box further across to the left.

Basically making the interests section less squashed!

Please can anyone help? I'm getting pretty frustrated!

  • Upstaged - can you help us with ideas for guest acts?

We are a pole dancing & fitness school who will hopefully be performing in a glass box in Bristol city centre for the BBC show Upstaged! It is kind of like a Big Brother only for 6 hours and we are competing against another act (could be anything) to entertain the public.

I am currently trying to think of ideas for possible types of act that we could invite into the box to help keep the audience entertained but also interact with us.

For example... A badger was in the box the other day (don't ask!) and he invited a yoga teacher he knew in for an hour to do some yoga with him. Ideas please and sensible ones are appreciated as i'm sure some stupid answers will come too due to the nature of our act! Thank you. xxx

If possible I would like to change that box into a blank box like the About Me section as at the moment the headings indent all the text making it squahsed and the headings are not applicabe to what is on there.

Can anyone help at all please? I do not want to change or simply remove the headings as that seems to still leave the text indented. Thanks!

  • Publisher 2003 Printer Driver Error?

I bought a new printer (Lexmark though I've read it happens with other makes too) and have Publisher 2003 on my pc. The printer works fine on test and printing from any other program but when I try to print from Publisher the message "Cannot load the printer driver" pops up.

When I go to print from the drop-down menu it won't let me into the settings either, I click on it but nothing happens.

Does anyone have any ideas how to fix the problem? Thanks!
