  • How to treat apple tree for bull's eye rot?

Last year, I tried to save one of my apple trees by having the bad looking limbs cut out. Unfortunately, it still died. What I did not know is, the tree had a type of canker disease. Now the other two are suffering. Likely, the disease spread by pruning with the same saw. The apples on one tree have the bull's eye rot. Obviously we're not eating these apples. They will be bagged and taken to the dump. In the meantime, I'm not certain what to do to save the tree. Someone suggested spraying the entire tree with diluted bleach. We're talking about 70 years old apple trees that are as tall as they are wide. It will require a lot of bleach. I'm desperate and will try anything. If this is a good idea, should I wait until the trees go dormant?

No apple cobblers, apple pies, apple butter, apple sauce, apple jelly, or apple cider this winter.

  • Restaurant vs a home cooked meal?

I have a friend who is very derogatory when it comes to eating at other people's houses. He says you don't know how people cook in their kitchen. However, he has no problem eating at restaurants with kitchen staffs you never see. I use to work in a restaurant and often read the restaurant inspection reports provided at the health department. One restaurant he patronize often receives critical citations. Recently the citations have been for employees chewing gum in the kitchen, grime and debris around cooking area, and temperatures not a proper level to eliminate bacteria. If I let these reports bother me, I would never eat at a restaurant. I definitely don't eat out every week. I believe that most people will not deliberately offer guest food that is not good. I have an aunt whose food I will not eat any more. Besides the fact that her food always taste bland because she only uses salt/pepper for seasoning, her house is roach infested and I've seen my uncle use a rag he used to wipe his mechanics hands on to clean a pot before putting it on the stove. Since this is what I know, I avoid food out of my aunt's house.

If you invite me to your cookout or dinner, chances are I'm there and not at a restaurant.

What is your preference, would you rather eat at a restaurant or have someone else home cooked meal?

  • Transplanted Dogwood Wilt?

I transplanted a five foot Dogwood tree that was being removed from a construction site. After pruning the damage branches, within two hours the leaves and flowers wilted. I understand the wilting occurred because of damages to the roots. What I'd like to know is this the sign of death or will it survive? What can I do to save it?

  • Did you watch Dirty Jobs with Mike Rowe castrating and docking lambs?

There was nothing interesting on so I settled for Dirty Jobs. I was all into the program until Mike got to the part of castrating, docking ears and tails. One of the lambs held his head back as if to be in great pain. Was it said they don't experience much pain at all? I was clinching my butt as if I could feel the pain. When the guy show how to bring the testes up and grab them with his teeth, I was done. It brought tears to my eyes. I couldn't watch anymore of it. I couldn't watch Mike do it. I can't get over the fact that all of this is done without giving painkillers.

  • Definitions during an interview, when you really don't know?

Among other questions during a state government job interview some give word terminology definition. For example, for an accountant position the question could be something like what is the definition of accounts receivable and accounts payable. Those are easy. The first time I encountered a term that I've heard but I was baffled for not knowing the proper definition. Now I "study" terms before interviews in hope that one of the words will be asked. I was told never to say "I don't know" however to attempt to answer the question. I hated the idea of making up something and sounding rather well stupid.

  • Love the Lincoln MKX but like the Lexus RX?

I like the Lincoln MKX, it has everything that I want. My brother, however, suggest that I get the Lexus RX, he has the hybrid. I don't trust the hybrid, so I would look at the non-hybrid version. In either one, I'm looking for a comfortable ride. Which would fit the bill?

  • Thirty year old grapevine need pruning and new support. Is it safe to do it now?

Last year after a storm damaged the supporting fence the old grapevine was on, I depended on a friend to build a trellis for me. Didn't happen. I can't allow it to stay this way another year since the vine has sustained some damage. It is one grapevine with a trunk that is four to five inches thick and 40 to 45 feet long. At the head of the trunk, the part that form the "v", one side is badly damaged and has to be cut. I discovered that a section of damaged side rooted. Therefore, I'm hoping it will survive since it appears to be self-sustaining now. The other end of the "V" is the longest and has many shoots. I was advised to prune before April when the bud start to burst. I live in zone 7. It is safe to cut and propagate before April?

The vine is heavy that I wonder if PVC pipes will provide good long term support. Previously, it was on unsightly rusted metal poles and fencing wires. Wood is out of the question. This will be my breaking fingernails project so it has to be simple to build.

Any advice on how to build a trellis or how to save the grapevine? Thank you.

  • Colonoscopy prep, does it matter what time?

I was prescribed Osmoprep for bowel preparation. I'm on a liquid diet all day. The preparation instruction my doctor gave me says to start the first regimen at 4pm and the last at 9pm. I'm anxious to start earlier. My sister told me her doctor's instruction was to start at 12.

My exam is tomorrow morning, and I'm to stop all intake at midnight. I'm hoping it really doesn't matter what time I start.

Has anyone completed the Osmoprep earlier in the day?

  • what is your opinion of eMusic?

I heard about eMusic for the first time today. What kind of music collect is there? I like music of the days when Isaac Hayes wore a chain-link vest, Rod Stewart was sexy, and Human League were really human.

I don't like the idea of registering to see what type of collection there is.

  • Want another Barn Owl in my area.?

About two years ago, a barn owl found attraction to my car head lights early one morning and landed in the middle of the road as if to block a prey. I was trying not to run off the road into the swamp. When the car stopped he was on the hood. My family use to tease me about it ; they don't realize how upset I am to have lost the owl that had be around here for a long time. Everyone in the neighborhood has has sighting of him. Apparently, he must not have had a family because there hasn't been sighting nor sound of a barn owl since. There is an increase number of small animals like field mice and rabbits. The snakes have been brave to baste in the sun across the road. Obviously the owl kept them under control.

Here in Virginia, the area is woody, and there are tobacco and cattle farmers in the area. I'm curious what usually attracts a barn owl to an area and are they loners. It would be nice to have another one around here.
