Reporting Plagiarism?
My good friend is writing a research article for a girl he's completely in-love with (who's obviously using him). She is going to get all the credit and the article will be submitted to a top journal. He's been writing her papers for years (even got her into medical school and taken some of her exams). He says she doesn't even ask anymore; just tells him to do it. He feels guilty for doing it but says he can't help himself because he "needs to do it for her." Her CV now is very impressive and I'm now convinced most of it was totally his own work, not hers. I know her name and her boss; he almost finished her paper for her. I don't have any other solid evidence besides the fact that he tells me everything he's doing (he won't let me report her) and a few other close friends knows as well (none of us approves). The only story I have is that he tells me he writes all her papers from scratch to finish. He even showed me all the drafts that he's written for her (under her name). But I can't obtain any of it (I think it's illegal if I try).
He writes and edits incredibly well and I'm sure he'll propel her up there in the academic/work life. But she's clearly using this guy and I really need to figure out what to do for my friend. If nothing happens, her huge CV will def get her into high places. Should I anonymously report to her boss, her boss' boss, etc? What do I do about possible repercussions when he finds out something bad happened to her because of me (he already knows I have the fiercest stance against what he's doing)?
I want to do the right thing, esp since I've been burned too many times by people with unfair advantages in the past. But this is a totally new situation where it's my good friend who is doing it for some girl he loves, knows does not love him back, and is...perhaps out of his freaking mind!
2 AnswersHigher Education (University +)9 years agoCan graduate students row competitively?
I am going to be a graduate student (PhD road) at a school different from my UG instituation, going from a state school to an Ivy. During my UG, I rowed my last 3 years as part of the university rowing club. Would I be able/eligible to walk-on the Ivy rowing team? I know they follow the NCAA eligibility rules but I noticed there are no grad students on their rosters.
So, can a grad who rowed his final 3 UG years continue competitive rowing at a new university? If so, how much longer?
(Personal note: This seems dumb since Men's rowing isn't even officially NCAA.)
1 AnswerWater Sports1 decade agoBiology Ph.D Candidate Dissertation (Thesis)?
I noticed that just about all biology PhD programs say that by the time your dissertation defense comes around, you should have at least 1 first-authored published work. I'm confused. I thought a dissertation was, by itself, publishable work. In the previous case, how broad IS a PhD dissertation supposed to be? Is the thesis technically the culmination of many publishable works thrown together into the RESULTS section of the thesis?
(Also, almost all non-dissertation publications I've read contained multiple different experiments that were done to prove a point. This further confuses me as to the difference between a PhD thesis and just a regular publication.)
RECAP: What is the difference between a biology PhD thesis and a "regular" publication [esp. in terms of topic/hypothesis(es) broadness]?

4 AnswersWater Sports1 decade agoRowing Ivy as a Biology Graduate Student?
I was just wondering if it's even possible to row (as a walk-on) at an Ivy league school as a PhD biology graduate student? I know I'd probably be spending almost my entire graduate life in the lab, but maybe there's still time for competitive rowing?
I've been rowing as an UG for 3 years and I can't imagine not rowing after graduation!
1 AnswerWater Sports1 decade agoGetting an early interview-invite from a prestigious graduate program?
I applied to an Ivy grad program just last week and immediately received a call today (today was the app. deadline) for an interview appointment. Nervous as heck, but besides that, how should I take the "early(?)" invite? Does this mean I'm likely in (provided I do nothing idiotic)? Does this mean I'm 50-75% done with all this admissions stuff?
2 AnswersHigher Education (University +)1 decade agoHow can you best remove the tape residue from wooden and rubber oars?
I've been rowing for 2 years now and can't seem to stop my hands from developing really really bad hand blisters. So to remedy this annoying problem, I've been taping the important parts of my hand. Problem is, the sticky part of the tape gets stuck on the oar, spreads over it, and makes it even more likely that I would hold my oar incorrectly (being even stickier)!
So, how can I best remove the sticky tape from my rubber oar after rowing? Removing for wooden oars too?
3 AnswersWater Sports1 decade agoBump on front leg while Running?
I've been running for about 4 years now, fresh out of my teens now, and everytime that I run for an extended amount of period on some hard surface like concrete, some bump appears on the front part (opposite side of the calf) of my left leg only. It's small and I thought it was a weird lymph node or something. Everytime it makes its appearance, my left leg stiffens up and feels like a heavy boulder. Anyone have ideas on what it is and what to do about it? Thanks.
