My husband and I have three gorgeous children. Our oldest, Noah, is 4 1/2, Jenna is 2, and James is will be eight months soon :) Now we're expecting number four! Our god daughter has downs syndrome, and she's come to live with us recently. We may be busy, but we love our life :)
What do you think of these names for a little girl?
One of my close friends just found out she is having a little girl! She already has a two year old daughter Lyra Sorrel. Here is her list of possible names so far:
Laryn Marissa
Hannabelle Pheobe
Lucianna Avril
Claudia Everly
Iris Evangeline
To be perfectly honest the names are a bit too unusual for my taste, but these are what my friend likes, and she wants some other opinions. What do you think of them? Which would you choose? Please, don't change any of them. If you don't like them just don't bother to answer.
11 AnswersBaby Names9 years agoMy dog hates my baby, what should I do?
A year and a half ago my now seven year old cocker spaniel Emma had a litter of puppies. We kept one, and named her Sparrow. When Sparrow was a month old, I gave birth to our fourth child, James. I was worried about how Emma and Sparrow would react, but they were both brilliant with the new baby. Three months ago, I had another son, Owen. We weren't all too worried about the dogs, but from almost the moment we brought Owen home, we could tell something was up with Emma. She barked and growled at him, and instead of warming up to him, has only gotten worse. I'm afraid to let him out of my sight for an instant.
People have suggested that she might be trying to protect her puppy from the stranger, but I don't think that's so, because she never acted that way to James. I have four other children, one with Downs Syndrome, so I really don't have the time to be constantly watching her and making sure she doesn't hurt him. I'm afraid that one of these days I'm going to be distracted for too long. Why is this happening? Emma's always been so great with the kids, and I really don't know what to do.
12 AnswersDogs9 years agoWould you read this book based on my description?
I know I've asked this already, but I didn't get many answers. It took me a long time to think of this so thoughts are much appreciated.
In the country called Bethany, there are four cities. The king rules over them all, and the king's four brothers each have a district that they lord over. The smallest city is home to the youngest brother, who is yet to be named. He married a 'native' woman, Cariss -- natives were the original people to inhabit the land, they used to practice things that are now considered witch craft.-- Cariss had two children with her husband, the oldest a boy, and then a few years later, a girl, Alberta, which is where the story begins. Alberta is 13 at the time the story begins, and feels out of place in the city, which she figures is due to her native blood. She longs for adventure, but shoves away the feelings and pretends that she is perfectly happy. Eventually, she starts to believe that, too. Until the day when she overhears two older teenagers talking about a revolution. She confronts them, and they decide that she isn't safe to leave running about with that information, so they offer that she could come with them. She agrees (her immaturity is her downfall)
The revolution is based out of an old boarding school in another city's farmlands, and is focused on teenagers and children, trying to get them to use their minds instead of just doing as they are told. Renaldo, the leader of the revolution, hopes that they will eventually dethrone the king, but in a peaceful way. Unfortunately, Renaldo is becoming more than a little stir crazy living in that old boarding school, housing stray children and runaways, and never seeing other adults. He does what I think many people would do, and begins to fancy 19 year old Bernadette. She is urged by the others to appease him, so that he can stay better focused on leading them. So, Bernadette becomes Renaldo's personal lover, and, understandably, grows more and more unstable as the months and years go by.
Unbeknownst to any character, except for Cariss, the king isn't the one making oppressive laws. Something is controlling him, and is posing as his daughter. The thing, which remains unnamed, consumes the souls of people who are chosen at birth, but only after they are 'done.' The thing can appear any age it wants to, despite being immortal, as long as it has souls. At the time, the thing is called Jinny, and is pretending to be the princess. Cariss knows that Jinny's next victim is Alberta, and has put a protective charm around her daughter. But the charm is only effective while Alberta remains in her city. So as soon as Alberta leaves to join the revolution, Jinny can finally get to her, and does. She pretends to be just another run away, and 'joins' the revolution as well.
The king, hearing about the revolution, calls some of the members to court to discuss their grievances. Jinny sees this as her chance, and causes the guards and other members of the court to go mad, and begin attacking each other. Marco, one of the minor characters who is part of the revolution, is killed. Bernadette, having loved Marco even through her time with Renaldo, is heartbroken. Just as Jinny is about to take in Alberta's soul, Bernadette steps in and begs to be taken instead, to save her from the terrible things she has been forced to live with with Renaldo. Thus, The thing is appeased, Alberta returns home to her family, and Bernadette lives on within what used to be Jinny.
Obviously it will be written better. Thanks.

When Cassia was young, people thought she was normal. We all did, really. There was nothing out of the ordinary about her. She learned to walk about the same time that other kids did, and she met almost all of the other developmental milestones as well. The only thing she missed was talking. We figured she would just take another month, at most. But she didn't even show signs of trying. Besides her cry, we realized we had never heard her voice. She didn't shriek when she was happy, or make noises at all for that matter. We wish that we'd caught this earlier, but the truth is, we didn't. Cassia was silent. Eventually, she outgrew her loud cry. After that, we litteraly never heard her again.
Doctors were baffled. Cassia was completely normal except for that one, major quirk. She had several, rather intrusive, tests done, until eventually we decided to stop. The tests brought no information forth, and they upset our little girl. It took time, but we got used to our daughter's wordless ways. As she grew older, she stopped needing to communicate at all. When she was hungry, she would get a snack, without a word. If she wanted anything she couldn't reach, she would get a chair and get it herself. For a child, she was extremely self sufficient.
Cassia was seven when our second child was born. It's hard to admit, but the reason we waited so long was our fear. No matter how much we loved Cassia, we couldn't bring ourselves to have another baby if they would have the same problem. Doctors assured us this wouldn't happen, and soon Nadia was brought into the world. She was just the opposite of her elder sister, and talked before she even knew how to walk on her own. Her first word was a monumentus occasion, and her second even more so. At four, when she was speaking very fluently, we began to harbor a secret regret about Cassia. If she had been like Nadia, how much easier our life would be. We loved Cassia as she was, and it was this love drove our secret wish. How could she ever have a happy, meaningful life if she never shared herself with the world?

22 AnswersBaby Names10 years agoMy child with downs syndrome exhibits autistic tendencies, is this normal?
My five year old girl with downs syndrome likes to flap her arms and hum. All the time. It has been brought to my attention that this is very common for a child with autism. Does this mean anything? I'm absolutely positive that she has downs syndrome, but is it possible that she has autism as well, or is just this a strange coincidence?
2 AnswersSpecial Education10 years agoIs it appropriate to let this continue?
Please excuse my ignorance, but I'm new at this...
My god daughter Ireland recently moved in with me because her parents couldn't care for her. She has Downs Syndrome, and she is 5 years old.
Ireland likes to sit on the ground and flap her arms around like crazy, while humming. It's become sort of a regular thing in our house, but my question is, it okay for me to allow her to do this in public? I know if I personally saw a child with Downs Syndrome do this, I would be perfectly fine with it, but is it considered socially acceptable by most people?
She also still wears diapers, and I avoid changing her in public because I feel like it may be uncomfortable for other women in the rest room. If I'm in a handy cap bathroom, can I change her?
Thank you so much.
7 AnswersParenting10 years agoMy husband wants to take my family to Disney World, is it a good idea?
My husband really wants to take our children to Disney World for Christmas Vacation. We have a five year old, Ireland, who has severe Downs syndrome. Our two year old most likely has Celiac's Disease (Can't have gluten) I have Celiacs Disease, and we have a baby who will be about a year when we would go. We also have a 4 year old, and I'm pregnant. My husband's brother and his family are going, but they only have two children who are 6 and 5. I feel like going with them would be really stressful for me. I would have to take care of Ireland and my 1 and 2 year old while everyone else went on rides, and I'd have to bring all of the food for my daughter and I. All of this, and I'll be five months pregnant at the time. My life is just to complicated right now, but my husband swears it won't be too hard.
Any suggestiong to make it easier, or should we even go?
8 AnswersToddler & Preschooler10 years agoHow can I get my 2 year old to eat?
My little girl recently turned 2, and when we brought her to a physical, her doctor said she is underweight. My husband and I are trying to get her to eat more, but she eats about a third of her portion and then complains of a stomach ache. We tried giving her bigger portions to trick her into eating more of it, but she still only eats about as much as usually. We made a "Clean Plate" sticker chart, which the older children love, but she has never gotten a sticker. Even when we give her food she likes, such as pizza or mac and cheese, she just complains her stomach hurts. Has this happened to anyone before? I don't understand whats wrong, and I'm scared that she's loosing to much weight. She's very small for her age already. Please help me.
14 AnswersToddler & Preschooler10 years agoHow do I explain this to my son?
I have three children, and my oldest is 4 /12. His favorite people in the world are his "Aunt and Uncle" who are really just my best friend, Lila, and her husband. The problem is, Lila is sending her 5 year old daughter, Ireland, to live with my family. Ireland has Downs Syndrome, and while Lila is a good mother to her other child, she can't handle Ireland's special needs. I'm a special education teacher, so the courts decided I'd be better equipped to raise her. She's my goddaughter, so I've always been slightly prepared for this to happen, but now that it's come down to it, I don't know how to tell my son without ruining the respect he has for Lila and her husband. He is very much in the 'why' phase right now, and I don't know how to explain. Please help.
3 AnswersToddler & Preschooler10 years agoFinal Decision, for now! What do you think?
I've decided on the names for my baby. If he is a boy, he'll be Owen Alexander, and a girl, Caroline Cheryl. Cheryl is after my late grandmother, so don't please don't say you hate it, even if you do. However, it you think it goes terribly with Caroline, you can say.
