I am a teacher at a public school in Taichung Taiwan, I have lived here for 5 years. I have experienced many things in my time here, and have grown to see the world in a different light. I love to ride my scooter around the country side and climb the local mountains. I am relatively boring person cause I move to my own beat and do things my own way. I stand by a few creeds that seem to have give me a good look on life~ "Don't worry, Be happy" "Everything in life is transient so don't get hung up on the pointless trivialities" "We are all born with free will, so I will use it to better my world and to live life to my fullest ability" I recently started a blog you can check out http://chububobcat.blogger.com http://chububobcat.spreadshirt.com/

2 AnswersTaiwan3 years agoIs Google permanately blocked in China?
Since like a week and half before the Tienanmen anniversary in June, all services to Google have pretty much stopped dead. Now its August almost and there is still no Google services available in China without the use of a good VPN/Proxy. Access to everything from search to email to Playstore to the Chrome app store is nearly impossible.
Is it official that the State Administration of Radio, Film, and Television (SARFT), which controls the internet, has officially banned Google services?
Or is it a result of the Hong Konger's protests of the white paper released by beijing at the beginning of June, and the march for freedom and occupy central. Which after the central government feels that the events have calmed down the internet will relax and Google will come back?
6 AnswersGoogle7 years agoWhy can't I open any of the apps on my iPad mini?
I used iTunes to back up my iPad so that I could take the pictures off it and remove several apps to regain some space before going traveling. After the backup was completed and I finished everything I added a 2 new movies from my computer. When I tried to open my video player (QQ Player HD) it brought up the launch screen then instantly closed, disappointed since I was no on a plane headed where I was going, I attempted to play temple run, angry birds, fruit ninja all of the 12 games I have with the exception of 3 all instantly jump back to the springboard. While playing around with it I found that 90% of my apps all crash instantly.
Before I backed up the iPad they all worked after none of them work. I have tried various methods to get it back into working condition but all have failed.
Yes, my iPad is jailbroken so that I can use a PPoE connection to get online using my wifi at home since it doesn't support a router. Other than that the only mod I have on my iPad is allowing 6 apps instead of 5 on the spring board tray at the bottom.
All of my apps except for cydia are legit downloaded from iTunes apps.

1 AnswerKorea8 years agopositive reward system for classroom management in preschool?
I am currently teaching a class of 12 4 y.o. kids and for 30 mins a day we have English circle time where they have to learn certain topics for the day. However, when ever it comes to English class they are well to put it politely a bunch of monkeys running around with their tails on fire. I have tried a lot of different methods to get them to settle down and to pay attention in the class but its not working out. I am looking into different positive reward systems for classroom management but I am having trouble setting up an effective plan that also has the possibility to evolve or change depending on how the children react to it, so that I am not throwing out an idea completely and returning with something new which isn't good for keeping the rhythm of the class discipline.
I have traveled to many different places and have lots of play money from those places so I was thinking of using the play money as a method to buy a treat at the end of the week if they are good, since it worked for my 5th 6th grade classes, even my high school students used this method but with different parameters for earning the money. However, for preschoolers this seems like too much, so I was going to change the money to smiley faces, sad faces, and gold stars. Where something like 5 smileys= 1 gold star 1 star equals one candy or treat 5 stars earns something else, and a sad face negates a smiley thus losing a point. However, to make this system work I am running into either self created paradoxes or actual paradox where a child who is exceptional earns smileys too quickly and other students are slower or even going backwards (because there are too many wild card kids) by earning sad faces. Since I want this to be a positive reward system where everyone gains something but at the same time has to realize that by receiving the negative sad smiley they are misbehaving and need to correct their behavior. I am not sure what to do when I have a student who is going negative consistently either because they find it funny or because they are mad that they are going negative and get stuck in a downward spiral.
I thought about adding an additional level for those who are excelling too quickly, but this seems to make it more convoluted than it needs to be, and would be confusing for the children. Basically I want to give them points for sitting quietly, paying attention, answering properly, and being active in the class and not being a wild monkey with his tail on fire, while using the sad smileys to show that sitting backwards in the chair, running up to me to hit me (not sure why), running up to me to ask a question, leaving without asking to go to the toilet, playing with each other (sometimes the just start randomly kissing each other, or playing with each others hair, etc), or shouting unwantedly.
Does any one have any suggestions on how to pull this off or have some experience in pulling this kind of system off with such young children?

4 AnswersJapan8 years agoMy android phone doesn't have debugging mode what to do?
I just bought a new ZTE U880E phone (it a China Mobile version) and I want to root the phone because it doesn't have Google Play (android market) or anything really... I found a program to help root it, but I can't access the debugging menu because it's not under the developers list.
I went to Settings > Applications > Development > and all that is listed is Stay awake and Allow Mock Locations.
Is there another way to root my phone or to find a way to enable the debugging mode?
3 AnswersCell Phones & Plans9 years agoIF the US lost its ability to be the leading world power who could replace US?
!!!!!!!!!!I am not trying to stir up troll flaming wars, or spread American nationalistic pride, this is a actual question.!!!!!!!!!!!
In an event where an ignorant individual is placed in to the presidential seat in the US causes the American geopolitical economic and military might to drop to a where it is no longer in the capacity to maintain its lead in the world stage, which nation would have the ability to ascend to the same level.
I know that a lot of people will claim China is the next power and I admit that the PRC has the ability to assert its military might (its already attempting it and has demonstrated it in the past), and has the potential to be a financial/economic power house.
However, the US does a lot more than just flexing military might, and throwing money around. There is whole area of support, diplomacy, and security that other nations gain from the presence of the US on the global stage.
Which nations have the capacity to show up every time there is a disaster anywhere in the world, to send food around the world, to fund the United Nations, and give support to those nations like Canada (sorry canada) who's military presence is weak, and all the while giving a voice to the smaller nations like Vietnam, Philippines, Bermuda, etc. when there is a dispute between them and others, or fund the war on illegal arms, drugs, and the myriad of other things it supports & funds?
You have to admit that the US leaves some REALLY big shoes to fill as leading superpower, which nation(s) have the ability to reach this level?

4 AnswersBuying & Selling9 years agoMy Dell N5010 is randomly shutting off for no reason, can you help me?
I bought a DELL N5010 last year in June, and never really had issues with it until around December last year. It suddenly developed a case of automatic forced shutdown. I would be watching a movie, playing a game, or something like that and suddenly with no warning it would shut off with no option to stop it. However it will start right back up if I turn it on like nothing happened.
Its basically a forced shut down, the screen goes black and 10-15 seconds later its is completely off.
I have taken it to a computer shop to see what they can do for me, and when it came back it had other small issues along with a message saying that DELL support here in Taiwan can't do anything with it because I don't have an international warranty.
I am running widows 7 ultimate ed. on a Seagate 7200.4rpm 500GB HDD powered by intel i3 core with 2GB RAM, if anyone can help me or point me in a good direction to find out why this happens please do for my sanity's sake.

3 AnswersTaiwan9 years agoRenting scooters in Taiwan?
Does anyone know where to rent a scooter in Jhongli? I got a friend flying in for a month and just going to be in Chungli from 24-28 but would like to get around. Also any info for Hualian about renting a scooter, we're both going over there for a holiday next week and would like to rent a pair of bikes?
I know most train stations have a rental center near them but not being familiar with either city and my friend not wanting to come down to Taichung, we're kind of at a loss as to where to go.
Thanks~ as always serious answers are appreciated 100 times over saying something at random with no beneficial value.
1 AnswerTaiwan9 years agoHainan Air over weight baggage question~ Flight from Guangzhou to Taipei?
I'm making a one way flight from Guangzhou to Taipei in a week, and I was told by Hainan air the name only permitted 44 pounds or 20 kilos of combined stowed luggage for the flight and one carry bag. Problem is that in total I have for bags, two suitcases (when I arrived in China weighed in at something like 35 kilos) one duffel bag and my laptop (which for obvious reasons will not be checked regardless Hainan's desires).
Since they have such ridiculously low weight limit between China and Taiwan I'm looking at having to pay extra limit excess baggage weight, but their website doesn't offer the fees for flights between China and Taiwan they only have fees U.S. and Canada. Does anyone have experience with Hainan airlines that knows anything about carrying over week items in their fees?
Otherwise I am looking at mailing something to Taiwan and I don't have much faith in the delivery times off the China Post. Mailed something back to the US (just a small 2kg box with some gifts from my gf) and it took a month to get there even using express airmail. I thought about using FedEx but this service is way too expensive. For just one suitcase it would cost 600 U.S. dollars. This is not a viable option because my ticket only cost 150 U.S. dollars.

I have a friend who keeps inviting me to Xi'an and I have some free time coming so I was thinking of going, but I have no idea about how to get there. I read that the bus takes like 2 days and that people say its not very safe for foreigners so I might want to look into that....haha.
Does anyone have experience or knowlege about the costs and various transit methods to get to XiAn from Guangzhou?
3 AnswersChina9 years agohow to edit my wordpress blog from China?
I have know that either Wordpress has been blocked or it has been crippled by throttling the bandwidth to it down to a point where no browser can open it since late October. But I also know that a lot of people are still updating their blogs from within China. So how does one go about doing this.
I can't even do it by proxy~ so there has to be another way.
Before I could use my iPhone Wordpress app and upload that way but now that is even broke. It will update its self and everything but I can't upload.
I can read wordpress blogs sometimes~ but often they are blocked, and until last week I was able to open my own site but now its down.
Anyone know anyway to do this?
2 AnswersChina9 years agoWhat other jobs are foreigners permitted carry out in Taiwan other than teaching English?
Having lived in Taiwan for so long and loving the school that I was in I never really paid attention to the talk about other jobs that people did other than tutoring, or editing work. I have heard some people with wives that work here and there doing this and that... but again I never really listened to well.
So aside from Teaching, what jobs are available to foreign residents of Taiwan?
Like office work, restaurants, cafe's , whatever. I am not talking about the crappy labor work that the Filipino workers get saddled with or doing house work like the Malaysian women (not being racist just stating a fact).
Rather some white collar jobs or service industry jobs. Well I am sure if you work in the service industry you need fluent Chinese... but anyway whats out there and how do people find these jobs? Does anyone know?
I earnestly curious about this because I have heard so much talk about these kind of jobs but never really knew how people got them or who offers them or where to look for them.
Earnest answer please and don't mention picking up a newspaper and looking in the classifieds unless you have a serious specific job that is current and easily found.
3 AnswersTaiwan9 years agoWhat to do in Hong Kong during Christmas?
I am going to Hong Kong for 3 days from Dec 23-25th and looking for things to do.
I have been to HK many times but I don't know what to do during the Christmas season to make it more entertaining than just wondering around looking in stores and etc.
So far we have gone to Lantau Is, Victoria Peak, Po Lin Monastery, Stanley Market, rode around on the harbor, shopped until it became annoying. I really can't think of anything else to do.
Also, does anyone know any good KTVs a few friends from Japan are coming to visit on Dec,23 and asked to go to karaoking, any suggestions?
4 AnswersChina9 years agoHow to get a copy of your own criminal record report?
I am in China now, and I found a company that I would like to work in. However, in order to get a working visa I need to present a copy of my Criminal Record report, but I have no idea how to do this while in China. The company told me that they are not sure how to obtain one from the US, and that I should do it.
I have never had to do this before since American companies do it on their own, and my school in Taiwan was able to get the report on their own.
Does anyone know how to do this? I am from Ohio, if this makes a difference.
