  • Trying to find the words to an old Chinese song from Taiwan?

I met a guy last night who had lived and worked in Taiwan in the early 60s. At that time, he had a driver who had asked to learn the U.S. national anthem. In return, he was taught a song which the driver told him was the national anthem of Taiwan.

He (this American guy that I met) sang the song for me as he remembered it and it's not the current anthem, we're both sure of that. I also doubt it was an official anthem in the past - at least not according to Google. It seems to be a patriotic song of the time. I didn't recognize many of the words but it seemed to say something like ”们的大陆” and I think it talked about going back to the mainland, but I can't be sure. He said it also spoke of Kruschev and Mao. Does anyone know of a song like this? I was just really curious about what the words might be.

Thanks in advance for your help!

  • I'm trying to copy and paste some data into a spreadsheet. How do I do it?

Actually, I just realized why it may not be working. The original data is in columns, but it's not officially in cells - just tabbed. I'm using OpenOffice. I first tried to "convert text to table" in OfficeWriter, but it only made rows. It didn't separate the columns. Grrrr!

The data I need to copy and paste is in 6 tabbed columns and 3000 rows. Ideally I would be able to make it into a Calc (OpenOffice) spreadsheet. Help! Any ideas?

  • How does a spreadsheet or table sort Chinese characters?

Let's say I had cells on a spreadsheet or table that contained Chinese characters. Would I be able to sort them in some kind of order equivalent to "alphabetical order"? I use OpenOffice. I bet they don't have this feature. How would I get this and how would it sort if I had it? By stroke count? Radical? What?

    Thanks for your help.

  • How would you answer this interview question about ELL students?

"What's the most effective way to teach ELL students?"

What's an easy way to answer that? I know how I do it, but I'm looking for a good interview answer.

    Thanks!

  • Has anyone taken any of these Chinese proficiency tests?

--American Council on the Teaching of Foreign Language - Chinese (ACTFL) - U.S.

    --Test of Proficiency-Huayu (Taiwan)

--Hanyu Shuiping Kaoshi (HSK) - China

If so, which one did you take? Please answer the following questions about it if you can:

    1. What did you think of the writing portion?

2 Are you able to type Chinese during the test or do you have to hand-write an essay?

    3. How are you tested for the speaking and listening portion?

    4. How would you suggest studying for the test?

    Can anyone compare them?

    Thanks for your help!

  • If you are an English teacher teaching at a PUBLIC school in Taiwan, please answer this question.?

How did you get your job? Did you go through an agency or did you deal with the school directly? Were you already in Taiwan? What kind of teaching license do you have? Do you like the job? I'm especially interested in elementary positions, but anyone working in a Taiwan public school is welcome to answer. (That includes Chinese-speaking teachers).

    I appreciate your answer!

**Note: Please, no notes about private school teaching. I've been there done that and I know the score. Thanks!**

  • What do you think of this translation? (Chinese-English)?

You say you still love loneliness

But in fact you are afraid I've seen through you

You are afraid of the ship we are on

    Drifting away from the shore

Up to this point there is no solution

    (I don't know!)

I really hope for your lead

no matter how difficult it may be

Gradually weakening love is not love

I want to forget you, but it's impossible

    Longing tears at my heart

Eternally hoping for what never comes

    Why did you choose two?

Wanting to hear you say you love me

Once said, the wind scatters the words

Standing at both extremes is just as bad

The only answer is to love just one.

    Thanks!

(A machine translation won't help, by the way)

  • Why do people procrastinate?

When I have something to do I procrastinate. When it's really important I procrastinate more. Although sometimes I get things done when I'm procrastinate (not the thing I'm supposed to be doing though).

Lately, I answer a lot of Yahoo questions when I have a deadline. Jeez.

    Anyway, why?
