Being a teenager and making minimum wage that barely covers my insurance and gas means that I'm practically totally broke at all times. My boyfriend and I have been going out for almost a year now and I wanted to make him something for it since I don't have the money to buy anything for him. I write him tons of letters and notes and have practically made him a scrapbook, so any other ideas?
Any ideas at all will be appreciated. Thanks so much!

I walked into the school with my huge backpack and prepared myself for the worst. I guess that’s always been my mentality about things – prepare for the worst and you can never be disappointed. Underneath my pessimistic views though laid an innocent girl who wanted nothing more than a happy first day. I glanced down at my schedule one last time and hoped I could remember where my classes were. My thoughts hadn’t even had the time to process to the point where I would worry if I would make friends or where I would sit at lunch. When the bell rang, I made my way across the catwalk that spanned between both of the buildings to my first class. I walked into my first period and took the only seat left in the main back, hoping to remain invisible, but yet I still yearned to have someone notice me.
I waved slightly to the people sitting on either side of me and started fiddling with my hair in one hand. I pulled out a thin binder from my backpack and waited for the teacher to enter the room, not really sure what else I should be doing. An old man, who clearly had to be near retirement, entered the room and the class silenced immediately. He struggled to make it to the front of the room, but still the class waited in silence. I realized this man must demand some level of respect as I had never seen a group of high-schoolers so quiet and almost fearful. He drew a raspy breath and wrote his name across the board in chalk.
“Obviously my name is Mr. Hamilton. This year you will study the difficult concept of advanced placement language and composition. We will read, write, and analyze constantly in this class. I expect half of you to drop my class by tomorrow. If not, I will cut half of you myself. This class is no nonsense, therefore I do not accept those who are not willing to try.”
He coughed heavily, and sat down behind the podium in front of the chalkboard, and looked at us all almost expectantly.
“Underneath everyone’s desks is a prompt. Please place that upon your desk now.”
I reached underneath my desk frantically and grabbed the paper. I placed it on my desk and knew I was about to regret signing up for this class.
“You now have forty-five minutes. Complete the prompt and turn it in at the end of class. If you do not finish, you will be asked not to return to my class. If you do not answer the question correctly, then the same goes for you too. You’re only chance of surviving this year is to ace this paper. Good luck.”
I was completely shocked by this teacher’s blatant disregard for any of the student’s feelings and already knew I did not like him at all. I could see the boy on the left side of me scribbling furiously already though and knew I needed to get started. I read through the prompt quickly and began writing almost automatically. Luckily for me, I knew exactly what I was going to write about.

I know it's pretty typical, nothing too grand at first. The story will get better toward the middle and end though - that's when things get interesting.

This is a small excerpt from my first chapter.
My shoes were uncomfortable and my dress a little too tight but I stood there in my spot trying to look happy for the lovely bride, my sister, and her beautiful soon-to-be husband. She had made me maid of honor after all, I should be thrilled. Though honestly, the idea of being her maid of honor seemed nearly suffocating when she told me. I couldn’t refuse though, no matter how much I disagreed with love and marriage. It’s not like you could tell your oldest sister who you had always adored that you didn’t want to be her maid of honor. You just couldn’t, no matter what the circumstances.
I gripped onto her bouquet tighter, ready to hand it to her so she could run down the aisle with it once the doomful I do’s were said. The priest announced them as husband and wife, and she turned to me grabbing her flowers and running down the aisle happily, hand in hand with the man who was now her husband.
They looked so happy; I almost wanted to believe it for a second. That maybe, just maybe, love could be real. But then I saw my divorced parents sitting in separate rows and was reminded, if their once seemingly unbreakable love couldn’t last, no love could. Not even Anthony and Autumn’s love could last in this type of world, though I truly did have the highest hopes for them.
“Summer? Summer, come on honey. Let’s go, we need to get to the reception.” My mother said, motioning at me to follow her.

Just something random I wrote up. Any good? How can I make it better?
Crouched low beside the bed, I slip breathlessly across the floor toward the closed door. Opening it ever so slightly as not to wake her and intrude upon her dreams, I fit myself in the crack silently and sneak myself out into the hallway. One pale, yellow light illuminates the hall at the very end in front of the large window in which you could watch the whole neighborhood if you wanted to. Finally standing up straight, I walk until I reached the light, the hardwood floor creaking inevitably underneath my feet as I do so. One quick breath leaves my lips, blowing the candle out and leaving me in complete darkness, just the way I like it.
My eyes droop close as I walk down the carpeted steps but I ignore the sensation of being tired. I don’t have any trouble getting down the steps because I have made this trip in the dark so many times before. Using the ghostly shadows on the wall created from the streetlights as my guide once at the bottom, I make my way to the front door. Still careful not to make a single sound, I cringe as my foot plops down too hard on the floor right before the door. I stand still for a few moments, listening to see if anyone heard the faint crackle my foot made. Luckily for me, tonight they don’t.
Grabbing my sweater, I head out into the winter cold, finally able to relax. No longer having to watch my footfalls, I tread down the pathway quick and fast. Snow is falling slowly, nothing major yet, and I pull my sweater over my head. I reach down and touch my toes, stretching my sore muscles. Within a few minutes, I’m off, sprinting down the cold sidewalk at 3 am.

Find f(x) + (g(x), f(x) - g(x)
f(x) = 3/x - 7 (3 is over x - 7, it's a fraction)
g(x) = x squared + 5x
I know how to get the answer in the first problem except for the denominator being (x-7). I don't know where that is coming from in the equation.
