Twenty something who loves loud music, booze and great company. I'm native to the Boston area.......ask me to 'Park the car in Harvard yard' at your own peril.....I mean it. I live for observational humor and goading drunken Sox fans. Feel free to contact me with questions pertaining to music........please no existential rants.

  • What makes a good cover of your favorite band/artist's songs?

What makes a good cover of your favorite band/artist's songs?

This is something I have been thinking about since Sara's cover question:

    http://answers.yahoo.com/question/index;_ylt=AjcRR...

We are all picky and have our own preferences to make it good in our own eyes.

For someone to do a good Jeff Buckley cover its all about the vocals.......if the artist can't match the vocal talent then its a wash for me, Buckley had such a range and talent that he incorporated into pretty much all of his songs. Even if the musical styling and arrangement are amazing, if the vocals aren't there......no go

  • Bands whose careers are spent sounding the same......?

For some, they are crucified because they do this (the first bands/artists that come to mind are nu metal bands). For others they are praised for sticking with their sound (AC/DC).

Why do you think this is?

What are some other bands who are praised/criticized?

  • Vocalists that just......?

don't have a pleasing voice, but somehow make it work? I've noticed this in some of the music that I listen to. What vocalists in your opinion would fail miserably if they attempt to perform in a different genre?

My vote goes for Dicky Barrett (MIghty Mighty Bosstones), Tim Armstrong (Rancid) and Henry Rollins (Black Flag), just to name a few

of another? It could be completely be unrelated.... yet it reminds you of another nonetheless.

Whenever I hear Silversun Pickups' Well Thought Out Twinkles is associate it with The Breeders' Cannonball....I think its due to the guitar riffs

  • What came first......?

"What came first, the music or the misery? People worry about kids playing with guns, or watching violent videos, that some sort of culture of violence will take them over. Nobody worries about kids listening to thousands, literally thousands of songs about heartbreak, rejection, pain, misery and loss. Did I listen to pop music because I was miserable? Or was I miserable because I listened to pop music?"

A good question posed by John Cusack's character in High Fidelity.........what is your opinion? What came first - the Music or the Misery?

  • What is the song that will define the 00s?

When you think of the 50s, you probably think Johnny B. Goode or Jailhouse Rock. For the 60s, Aretha's Respect or the Stones' Satisfaction stand out. The 70s brings to mind Stairway or even Hotel California. Billie Jean appears to define the 80s. The 90s triggers thoughts of Teen Spirit.

So, what song do you think people will remember for defining the 00s, say....20 years from now?

  • Songs that remind you....?

....of another person. I'm not talking about the lyrics. What songs' musical compostions remind you of someone you know?

For me Pantera's Walk reminds me of my 5 year old.....always stomping around acting like a bull in a china shop.

  • A thin line between fan and fanatic.......?

This was inspired by Cinnamon Girl's question earlier........

When do fans cross the line into fanaticism? When does the admiration cross the line into something completely different? We've probably all known at least one person completely obsessed with and artist/band that the label of true fan dissipates into that of overzealous admirer.

In you opinions........where is the line drawn in the sand between fan and obsessed devotee?

  • Nostalgia songs.....?

On the way to work this morning, Stereophonics' A Thousand Trees and James' Laid came on the radio one after the other. It sent me back to those far away days of the 90s..........

What are the songs that bring you back to the 'good old days?' You know, the ones that you completely forgot about and then they suddenly come on the radio and it brings you back?

  • Am I the only one who has noticed?

Is Michael Jackson that hard up for money? In the space of 10 minutes I have heard 4 commercials using Beatles songs.......this is a trend that has slowly been gaining momentum. What next? I shudder to think of the things he will do with the Beatles' collective catalog.

  • Holiday music recommendations........?

with the holidays coming up, I'm going to be spending a lot of time in the kitchen and I've pretty much worn out the usual Thanksgiving and Christmas carols/songs.

I'm definitely looking for more rock/metal ones.

So far I've checked out and recommend Gary Hoey......but can anyone think of anyone else?
