  • If I see double (due to tiredness, drink, a knock on the head etc.), which image is real?

Or is the "real" object somewhere between the positions where each eye is telling my brain it is?

  • Anybody know the author of a poem entitled "The Congo"?

I think it was written in the 1930's or 40s, but not sure. The opening line is:

    "Flat-backed bucks in a wine-barrel room

Beat an empty barrel with the handle of a broom".

the refrain line is (something like):

"Then I saw the Congo bold and black

Cutting through the forest like a golden track..."

    It's a good 45 years since I read it.

  • The UK's so-called "strong economy" relies entirely on credit, underpinned by high property prices: Discuss.

On the one hand encouraging the "buy or die" mentality of Britain, and on the other ensuring high population pressure by immigration, is essential to prevent total financial collapse. It is necessary that it becomes ever harder for people to own property, and paramount that they want to. Note also that nearly all top political decision makers will own two or more properties.

  • Latitude and longitude reference coordinates.?

When you use lat. and long. options on your GPS, it is usually with reference to WGS84. Working in North Africa we used to be given coordinates for oil wells etc. in Clarke1880 format; as the difference could be as much as 2km, we had to get them to redo it in WGS84.

What causes the difference, and why is there one at all? If I worked out my latitude and longitude with a sextant and chrononometer, what system would I be using? What system do Ordnance Survey maps use, and what about Google Earth?

  • Impact of grazing animals on geenhouse gasses?

Concerns are raised about the impacts of ruminants producing methane on global warming. But what about the vast number of ruminants that have been wiped out? Millions of bison in North America, probably over 80% of the antelope, buffalo and other big grazers in Africa etc. They must have farted methane too, but no more.

And the last Ice Age was a period of truly immense herds, often of animals much bigger than their modern relatives.

Why did these not cause warmiing in the past?

  • I'm trying to find a piece of music called "Indian Summer"?

It was written in four movements, two of which are entitled something like "By Running Waters" and "Great Spirit Speaks".

The whole piece had a native American theme. I last heard it when playing in a brass band over 40 years ago.

  • Do cars really explode when falling through the air?

In some movies, we see a car falling over a cliff or off a bridge, and it bursts into flames before it reaches the ground. Would this really happen, and if so, why?
