I love horses, that's why I'm mainly active in the Horse Section of Yahoo!Answers. Riding Western and training horses are my two favorite topics, but all facets of the horse world interest me and I love learning more about God's most beautiful creature. If you would like to learn more about me or read more of my training advice, check out my blog CowgirlDiary.com! http://www.cowgirldiary.com

  • Anyone interested in a free horse book? Plus LQ, of course.?

Hi, Horse Section! I'm announcing a free book giveaway on my horse training blog, CowgirlDiary.com. It is easy to enter, and you can get your friends and family to vote for you to win, as well.

I give a full review of the book, Horses Never Lie About Love, by Jana Harris at this link: http://www.cowgirldiary.com/archives/2066 and this is also the link where you leave your name (or username) as a comment to enter the giveaway.

There are no strings attached, you don't have to "like" my facebook page or follow my blog...just comment and get people to vote for you. The name with the most votes wins the book, it's that simple!

LQ: What is the best horse story (fiction or non-fiction) that you have ever read?

  • Conformation Question: Rate 5 Sons of Firewater Flit!?

This is just for fun, to liven up the horse section a little. I've got five sons of Firewater Flit for you to critique. Tell me who's your favorite, and why. Would prefer conformationally-based opinions, as I'd like to learn more about conformation.

Photos are all at this link. Feel free to join the forum and post your answers there as well!

  • Anyone else having problems sending emails to any Yahoo accounts?

Yahoo mail seems to only be working if you're mailing FROM a Yahoo email account. I called my internet service provider, and they said that everyone statewide is having this problem and that Yahoo is messed up right now.

Just wondering if anyone else has noticed, and if it seems this is a problem by location only.

If it doesn't work for you to send an email from a non-Yahoo account to any Yahoo email accounts, would you please answer? Let me know what states are having trouble.

    I'm in Iowa.

  • Opinions on this Cutting Mare? Confo, bloodlines, price, etc?

Hey, what do you guys think of this mare? I'm not actually looking at getting into cutting, but I want a cow horse to work cattle on, and she sounds like she'd be bred for it.

I'd like any opinions on her conformation, bloodlines, and if you think the asking price is reasonable. There are a few others on this website that I like the look of, but she just seems to have it all together in looks. I'd definitely go check her out first and see if I like how she rides, but just from a viewing perspective, what do you guys think?

  • Would you breed a mare to this stallion?

This question is mainly for those of you who raise horses and breed mares every year. Would you consider this stallion as a sire? I have two mares, and am not planning to breed them this spring, but I came across this stallion's ad and wondered what the general consensus is on his conformation, breed(s), color, and worth as a sire.

Thanks in advance for your opinions and answers!

  • Would this be a good horse for a beginning rider?

I'm wondering if this would be a good horse for my cousin who is learning to ride. It says "Intermediate", but she's fifteen years old and looks like a seasoned show horse. What is your opinion, would she be suitable?

  • Pelvic joints popping and aching a lot, and I'm young...what is this?

I'm 31 yrs old, and am breastfeeding my 17month son still, who co-sleeps and nurses throughout the night. Lying on my side to feed him, I get stiff and sore, and when I do roll or turn over, my joints in my pelvic area pop about three times to adjust. Like a knee popping, but I actually feel things move. When pregnant, I often felt like my hip was going to give out, and my doctor told me this was normal, as your joints loosen before birth to allow for easier delivery. Sixteen months later I'm still having pain and popping, not so much in my hips, but down inside, like my pelvic region, between my seat bones.

Anyone else experience this? Any ideas? I have considered trying a chiropractor, but it only hurts enough to scare me that something might actually be wrong or out of place. What would pop three times and adjust "down there"? Any sensible feedback is appreciated.

  • Selling horses--which site to use?

I have two horses for sale and am wanting to post them on horse classifieds websites. I know there are a few free websites, but the ads that are listed there seem out of date and may not get much attention.

Which of these websites do you think are the best, and which would you choose first, to advertise a horse for sale?

  • Common mistakes in beginning riders?

Let me first point out that I'm NOT out to make fun of beginners...we all were there at one point in time. But my question is both for our enjoyment and also hopefully to help others learn what not to do when riding a horse....

What are some strange, silly, common mistakes you have seen a person do when riding a horse?

    My favorites are:

    1. When the rider is getting on the horse and leaves the horse's reins hanging down to the ground as they struggle to place their foot in the stirrup and crawl their way up into the saddle. Lesson here: ALWAYS have your reins in your hand as you mount...no telling what the horse may do, and you need to be in control of the horse if you're really going to ride it.

    ....more details to come....

  • Wow! A registry for "misfit horses"...just what we need! Have you heard of this?

I was looking for interesting horse facts online, and stumbled across this:

    Perkehner

Not a true breed, the Perkehner has been defined as "any equines in the universe that express somewhat misfit traits." Owners with potential Perkehners may register them by sending the Society $11.79, along with a photograph and a list of three qualifying "peculiarities."

Universal Perkehner Society, P.O. Box 1874, Cave Creek, AZ 85311-1874

    http://www.horseworlddata.com/breeds.html#Color%20...

I just thought it was pretty interesting that you can register a horse based on its weird (or undesirable) characteristics. I wonder if the fuglyhorseoftheday gal has heard of this breed?

If I did have a horse with the three qualifying traits needed for this breed, why would I want to register it in a group of poorly-formed equines? To have a contest for whose is worst? What do you all think?

  • Horse's Skin Condition/Allergies (pics included)--Anyone know what this is?

My brother just sent me these pics of a strange condition his new horse seems to have just developed. They bought the horse about a month ago, and these strange wounds have just started popping up here and there.

The horse is a solid black APHA gelding, six years old. Was stabled previously, now in pasture turn-out. The wounds started on his neck and shoulders, especially up by his mane, now they are also on his flank and legs. Not many on his back, rump, or belly, but some are appearing on his face and by his ears.

He had squishy grey bugs crawling in his ears making small sores, and when they wiped fly spray in them, they started tumbling out of his ears. The sores are yellowish, oozing scabs, raised up, in his hair. No blood, only yellowish liquid. If broken off, there is a red sore underneath, like a layer of skin was torn off, but it doesn't bleed, or seem overly painful.

Any ideas on what this is and a cure for it?

    (posting additional details...out of room)

  • Horse Coloration: Is this a Sabino? Rabicano? Knowledgeable answers only, please!?

I'm working on a Horse Colors and Variations page for my horse website. When researching this, I thought I had it all figured out, but some of the coloring is so technical, and I want to be certain I am only putting out correct information for the public to view. So can you help me with a few questions, please?

Is this horse a Sabino? (Its ad says it is an Overo, I've emailed the seller for permission to use the photo, and asked if it might be a Sabino.)

    http://i215.photobucket.com/albums/cc25/DaisyKJ/ov...

And would you call this horse a Rabicano? Or a Sabino?

    http://i215.photobucket.com/albums/cc25/DaisyKJ/IM...

And is this horse just a plain Appaloosa, or does it have a different color name?

    http://i215.photobucket.com/albums/cc25/DaisyKJ/ap...

Thanks for any KNOWLEDGABLE answers you can give me!

  • If Google Calendar is embedded on your site, are the events visible to search engines?

I have been wondering and trying to test this. If you have a website with a Google calendar embedded on it, such as my website http://www.liverystable.net/ (Events) will the events on the calendar be visible to search engines?

For instance, if someone is searching for a Peter Campbell Horse Training Clinic in Olympia, Washington on March 14, 2008 will the google or yahoo search engines give them my website as a result? I realize my site would probably be listed on the umpteen-millionth page, depending on the popularity of the event searched for. But I have tried to test this, and they don't seem visible. Which, for search engine optimization purposes, our Events listings would draw more traffic to our website if they were not set up on a Google calendar.

Am I correct? Or can you find events on a Google calendar by searching for them through popular search engines such as Google and Yahoo?

  • Don't we owe it to the horses we own.....?

I had a personal friend who bought a paint weanling from a breeding farm because she thought it was "cute" and wanted to have a "baby horse". This friend had the facilities to care for it, but not the experience necessary to raise and train a horse by herself. She ended up selling the colt a year later because it was getting "ornery".

My question is: Don't we owe it to the horse to only buy a horse if we have the ability to upgrade its current situation and invest value into the horse? I see SO MANY PEOPLE who want to buy a horse. They "adopt" a horse from a rescue or something, because it's under $500. They have no way of training it to ride, they don't have the money to hire a trainer, so they feed it for a few years until it isn't "fun" anymore, and then take it to an auction or try to sell it.

More details soon...I'm running out of room.

  • If your horse isn't perfect....this Horse Chain Letter may help!?

    Dear Horse Owners,

Are you experiencing too many second and third finishes behind inferior horses at horse shows? During a trail ride, does your horse forget everything he was bred to do? Well, this simple chain letter is meant to bring relief and happiness to you. Unlike most chain letters, it doesn't cost any money. Simply send a copy to six other horse owners who are dissatisfied with the way that their horse is behaving. Also, bundle up your horse and send him/her to the horse owner at the top of list, and add your name to the bottom of the list. Do not use a return address or the post office may try to contact you. In one week you should receive 16,436 horses, and at least one of them should be a keeper. Have faith in this. Do not break the chain. One owner broke the chain and got his own horse back.

...This is just a joke, but I enjoyed it and thought I'd pass it along.

...In order to make it a question, anyone have any CLEAN horse jokes they'd like to share?

  • Do you own a round pen?

Or do you use the round pen at your stable? What do you use your round pen for? I'm wondering if many horse people use round pen methods, or if most riders just use an arena? I'd like to get an idea of how many horse owners use the round pen. Thanks.
