I need to translate a paragraph but my English is not very good as I'm not a native speaker. Should I change these lines to make it sound more natural? I'd appreciate any answers.
The events in St. Mary's town reached their climax the next morning, when a squad of 200 Russian solders arrived from a neighboring region and conducted what turned out to be a bloody massacre.
Flinging around their whips and swords, they scattered the crowd of armless people.
The locals fought back with flails, bludgeons and stones.
The soldiers raided the church on their horses, destroying everything around them.
The most horrendous events took place near St. John's River.
As they were being pushed by the soldiers, people tried to escape by delving into the flooded river covered in thin ice.
Those who were more strong managed to escape but several women drowned.
The solders raged across the town, beating men, raping women and stealing properties.

[this is a historical and authentic eyewitness' account of a church closing process]
“There was a crowd of people in the church lobby.
The governor explained them in Russian that they need to close the church and ordered people to leave.
The people refused to obey his order.
Ultimately the police, wrestling the people, torn down the portraits that people were holding and broke the cross.
As people refused to leave the church, the governor got angry and ordered the officers to drive them off with a whip.
Then most of the people left.
The remaining ones were beaten with whips and were forced out from the church.
The confrontation could have ended at this point but the governor probably wanted to show his power to later boast of supressing a rebellion.
The guards who were standing in the churchyard began to further beat the people who were running already covered in blood.
This was the last straw for the locals.
The fences rattled behind the churchyeard and the local residents, armed with sticks and bludgeons, attacked the Russian officials.”

[I want to make a comparison of the powers of the company with an icebreaker as this idiom is in the original language; can I use such sentence?]

I need to translate a short verbatim account but I'm not a native Speaker. Can I use the phrase "the story has it" to refer to old times (that only old people remember). Here is the paragraph I want to improve:

“The legend has it that this lake would not freeze if it took one soul each winter. I myself was afraid to cross this lake as parents told me that it claimed one soul each year”

A church stood in this place in the 17th century. After setting up a family residence in this part of the town, the Count's family built a chapel on the hill. Unfortunately, time was not merciful to it. Today we can only see the remains of the chapel. However, this place has retained its romantic and mysterious character.

She was always very sure of herself and she believed that she had good Karma. Once she said to me: "I think that my karma is rather positive because all my wishes come true. I am always lucky at everything. Everything goes my way. If I come at the bus stop, the bus that commutes every 30 minutes, arrives in just a few minutes. If my house plants begin to show signs of dying, it makes me sad for a couple of days and then I see that the plant recovers. If I notice some kind of item at the store that I like but cannot afford, after some time I receive this item was a gift or I finally able to afford it.".

Take, for example, smoke detectors which are mandatory. But not all people have them in their apartments or houses. But it is worth remembering that such tiny device as a smoke detector can protect you and even safe your life! Make sure to have a fire alarm system in place if not for saving your own life, then for the safety of our apartment or house, if the latter comes first for you.
Also, fix electrical wiring which is in poor condition. It is one of the most common causes of a fire.

The work is performed most efficiently when people distribute tasks among themselves. Some people are better at some things than others. Working together, you will make greater effort and assume greater responsibility as you will not want to disappoint others or perform poorer than others. The job will be done more efficiently since the joint efforts will include multiple views. People’s kindness and unity do miracles. It is worth trying to adapt to one another.

My teenager years was the period where I fasted mostly. I was very conscious about my weight at that age.
The longest I fasted was 20 days. The entire time I abstained from food I felt well and I did not feel any dizziness or weakness even during the first days of fasting. I drank plenty of water. I tried to keep myself busy.
I did not know back that then once you “phase out” of fasting, you should start from light food. And me, on the contrary, after the long period of fasting, first ate a candy. It tasted very different than before fasting, I seemed like I was eating a piece of soap.
Usually, after fasting, food tastes better, its flavor intensifies. You feel smell better, and your overall sense of smell sharpens.
I don’t know if the benefits of fasting are proven scientifically. But I have heard numerous stories when long fasting helped to cure diseases which were considered otherwise untreatable.

People say that the first step is the most difficult to make. But the final step is no easier either. If you give it your best and worked hard, you eventually end up exhausted. Thus it becomes challenging to end what you started. In this case you have to focus, encourage yourself to keep striving and to put your remaining strength.
When you reach the finish line, you no longer think about the process and you either feel happy with yourself and your result or not. Either you gave it your all or saved your strength a bit out of laziness. Or maybe you just sat around doing nothing instead of trying to actually achieve something.
Sometimes you encounter tough moments during the process. This happens to everyone. You should then remember that it is normal. You should not stop, and not sacrifice the substance for the shadow.
If you set yourself a target plan and often fail to achieve it as you demand too much of yourself and have unrealistic expectations. Try to not set goals you could not achieve as you will be disappointed with yourself and waste your time.

You should better not postpone all tasks to a single day of a week. It would be best if you distribute them among all days of the week, a small amount of work per each day. Unless you want to have Sunday off. A student who passed examinations with flying marks once revealed the secret of his success: he learned a bit every single day.
Work therapy is an easy way to move towards better and higher-standard of living. Besides other benefits such as having what to do, new experiences, it also strengthens an individual’s self-confidence and allow him/her to see himself/herself anew. It helps addicts to recover and to learn new ways of living. I think that work therapy, as an additional measure, should be used in all rehabilitation centres as well as other treatment facilities.
Prisons should create an environment for inmates to work and otherwise reintegrate into society. All inmates should work to some extent and to earn money for themselves. This would not only help them grow as human beings but also help them learn new ways of taking care of themselves. Once released, they could take up the same or similar jobs as they did in prison. They would not need to resort to criminal behaviour as they would have some skills and money savings.

I have not read any popular books about karma but it seems to me that I believe in its existence more than others do. I think that if you are a decent human being, a responsible citizen who respects oneself and others, controls one’s behaviour and makes the right choices, then you will not get into major trouble. And I believe that the goodness of a decent person (both directly and indirectly) will, in a sense, protect not only himself/herself but also the people close to him/her and the country, he/she lives in, even the whole planet or universe. Of course, this protection will mostly apply to the positive individual himself/herself and, to a minimum extent, those around him/her.
If you do good, you bring goodness, beauty and holiness wherever you go. The better you are, the more powerful you will be because the good always overpowers the bad.
