Is it normal to dislike your mother?
My mother is one of the biggest problems that I have with my life the way it is. She has these strange double standards wherein she believes that she should be able to treat me any way that she pleases because I'm her child. She regularly uses me as a scapegoat for all of her problems and work, and she regularly returns home only to yell at me for things that sometimes I am not even aware of. She also many times calls me things like “retarded” or “weird”, and she gets angry with me when I don't react to her taunting and sometimes goes so far as to threaten me. She has some pint of aggression with my dad, and makes frequent references to the idea that I will be “Just like him.” She also puts really heavy restraints on me at all times: I'm 18 and I'm not really allowed to go anywhere or do anything. I still have a bed-time at 9:30 and I am forced to wake up at 3:00 am just to go down the street to my sisters just to go to school because she doesn't trust me to go and come back. When I do come back, I am basically required to clean anything that she has made a mess of while I'm at school before I am even allowed to do my homework, and even when I do I get yelled at and I just feel that there is really no way to just be left alone. There is never really any food and the house, and she doesn't really let me cook, so I feel like there is literally no place in which I have any control over how I am to live my life. I just want to live a productive life, am I wrong here?
1 AnswerFamily7 years agoGet into UK universities from America?
Hello,
I am currently a high school senior looking to emmigrate to the UK. Before you say anything, no this isn't me being stupid. I have quite a few British family members, and I really feel more comfortable there. My question is how I go about getting into UK universities for a physics MSci (so I can go for a doctorate, I think it is required to go on to do graduate stuff).
Assets:
3.5 GPA - A bit meh, but still
2130 SAT score
1 3 score in AP US History, and I am taking 5 AP's this year (aiming for 4s and 5s)
Extracarricular stuff which doesn't really matter but makes me feel better saying it
Roadblocks:
I only really have the above scores for AP, I spend most of my high school career moving internationally, so AP wasn't always offered.
I would like to get things done in the most direct way possible; I don't really want to spend 10 years waiting to finally go.
Does anyone have any advice on how to go about making this happen? What universities should I apply to? Should I do more testing? Also, what are the prospects of transferring into a school like cambridge for post-grad? I really want to be a great Physicist one day, but I really need a bit of help figuring out how to get there.
1 AnswerStudying Abroad7 years agoHow to get free SAT scores?
Ok, so I recently I took the SAT and recieved a score of: 2130. I didn't know at the time, however, that I had to claim the scores within nine days in order to get them free. My mother refuses to pay to have them sent. Is there any way to get them sent? Because she basically changed to saying this four days before the application has to be finished.
3 AnswersStandards & Testing8 years agoHow to keep a water balloon from popping when dropped?
We recently received a project in one of my classes that requires me to keep a water balloon from popping when dropped from several different heights. We are supposed to create a 1 ft. by 1 ft. contraption which protects it until 10 ft. I have created several ideas, and have tried two designs, one of which works okay. I'm curious as to whether anyone else can think of any cool ways to do it that are different than mine.
4 AnswersPhysics8 years agoAm I some pompous lunatic or is it something else?
Recently, I have discovered that within my school that there is a group of people that I don't really know very well who for some reason think I am pompous for some reason. The thing is that I don't believe that there is anything in my behaviour as being a mark of narcissism. I have my eccentricities: I like to wear suits because I like the way they look, I have an affiliation for learning things because (however strange it is) I actually enjoy doing so, and I conform moreso to a slightly older set of manners (I'm not some sexist idiot, either. I just think that people should attempt to be decent human beings and not be rude for no reason). Just as a note here, I'm not saying these things to brag, I'm just putting it out there in case any of these things is a problem. It seems like people think that I'm self-absorbed because I like to keep to myself and I refuse to do anything like drinking or gossiping. In the end, I'm not trying to offend anyone, I'm just doing the exact same things that I have been doing my entire life. I have a small business which could be the problem but I don't see why it should be because I work just as hard if not harder than anyone else. I try not to brag (I don't really talk much either way). It just baffles me that people here treat me like I've done something when I try to keep to myself. I just moved back to the United States from a period of living in Germany, and I guess that it may be slightly different in this part of the States, but I'm not sure. So I guess my question here is whether this is something that the other people at my school have abstracted themselves, or if I am genuinely doing something that makes people here see me as pompous.
1 AnswerOther - Society & Culture8 years agoIs there any way to pay for college without parents?
Hello, I am currently a junior in high school and I was wondering if there is any way to actually pay for college without involving my parents at all. I earnestly want to go, but I know that you can't exactly get scholarships with a 3.3-3.5. My father isn't really involved in my life, and my mother has already made it apparent that she refuses to pay for college for me (There isn't really any reason, she just doesn't exactly like me as much as my other siblings because of my dad). Is there any way to be able to pay for college (preferably through a doctorate degree, I really want one in Physics) that would allow me to do it alone? Because my mom always tells me that I'm not going to go because I have to rely on her in order to pay for college at all.
6 AnswersHigher Education (University +)8 years agoDo you have to pay taxes if you don't make money in a year for a business?
I am currently 17 and I really want to create a software development company. The only issue is that I am worried that I may not be able to put anything out within the first year, and I am really apprehensive about what might happen if I register the company and can't make money within that time. Mainly, I don't want to end up owing money to the IRS because I have to pay taxes when I haven't earned anything. So, as stated above, do you have to pay large-scale taxes if your business doesn't make any money at all one year? Should I register it now so the name isn't taken by someone else, or should I just wait until I have my first piece of software finished and hope that no one takes the name?
1 AnswerSmall Business8 years agoMy school is terrible, is there somewhere else I can go?
Hello. I am currently a junior who is about to head into his senior year and, as the title says, my school is absolutely horrid. All of the classes are far too easy (including the AP and honors classes), and it's slightly depressing because I moved here from a higher ranked school which had a lot more to offer. I feel like I won't be able to get many of the good things that I could get out of high school if I stay here: this district is very under-funded to the point where there are only about 5 clubs left and only about 3 or 4 sports (which won't even be here if the levy doesn't pass next month), they had gone through major cuts in classes so I don't have any classes that I can even take next year (i.e. they cut Spanish 4, and I'm in 3 and wanted to do all 4 years, I've passed every science/government class that they offer, and to graduate with honors I literally need 1 or 2 classes), the students and teachers both continually lower their standards (i.e. people literally turn in papers 3 weeks late and get full credit or write down random nonsense last moment for a project). It just feels like a massive waste of time when I'm getting almost no cultural or educational value out of it. My mom says that I should just be happy with being somewhere easy, but frankly I don't think that this place will prepare me for college/allow me to work at my full potential. I actually LIKE difficult work, and it is sort of saddening to know that everyone is content with just being lazy all of the time.
My question is: What are my alternatives?
Are there any private boarding schools which are still accepting applicants or anything of that nature? I don't live in an area where there are very many local private schools, and as previously stated my mom doesn't understand that not having any form of challenge in school is painfully boring. Thank you.
2 AnswersPrimary & Secondary Education8 years agoHow old do you have to be to request your social security number?
To shorten a long story, my mother lost my social security number, passport, and birth certificate. I have gotten a new copy of my birth certificate and my military dependent ID, but I am only 16 and I'm not sure if I need a parent since I am a minor.
2 AnswersGovernment8 years agoIs it strange that I don't identify with American culture anymore?
I have spent a lot of time in Europe and Asia over the past few years, and after coming back I have realized that it just doesn't FIT with me anymore. People find me weird now because I enjoy many aspects of other countries more (like Japanese customer service). Also, don't think I walk around talking about it. It just happens to come up in conversation. I'm considering moving back now, but it just feels weird to realize that what you've grown up with isn't the best option any longer.
1 AnswerOther - Cultures & Groups8 years agoGood physics colleges/universities for a 3.0 gpa student?
Hello everyone,
I am currently in my junior year in high school and my GPA is unfortunately only around a 3.2. I really would like to major in physics/mathematics in college, and I am slightly worried that my GPA is too low to get me into anything higher than a local community college. I have a decent number of extracurriculars which include (but are not limited to):
JROTC Drill Team Commander
POLIS: Leader of Western Europe (Basically a model U.N. with students from multiple countries)
Math Club
Tiger Tech (Engineering Club)
Fencing (2 years)
Kung Fu (2 years)
Mensa Member
Quite a few community service hours
My projected score from the PSAT (I went to the website and totalled up the projected scores): 2170- 2300
I have taken 3 AP courses, with the remaining ones all being honours (Honours English 11, Honours Pre-Calculus, Honours Physics, and Spanish 3). As a result of this, I am about a year ahead of the rest of my classmates, so I have the ability to talk to the seniors who are all making me nervous about my college choices. I spent the majority of the last four years moving around (twice internationally), and I don't want to have my chances ruined due to the fact that I couldn't constantly adjust to get things to work out cleanly. I know for a fact that I can get letters of recommendation from a US Fullbright (my Spanish teacher) or any of my AP teachers, but do you guys (sorry for the general masculine pronoun {and girls}) think I will be able to get into somewhere where I can pursue physics? Or is there anything I can do to boost my chances?
4 AnswersHigher Education (University +)8 years agoIvy League Admissions Help?
Hello Everyone,
I am a bit worried about my acceptability to college.
GPA: 3.0
Extracurriculars: Math Club, Tiger Tech (Engineering Club), JROTC Drill Team Commander, POLIS (International UN Simulation : Leader of Western Europe)
PSAT Score: 2130
I am a bit worried due to the fact that I have been to six different schools during the course of my high school career which has dropped my GPA. (I.E. My GPA for the last two quarters were 3.9 and 3.7, respectively) I have always wanted to go to an Ivy League School, and I don't want the fact that I had to move internationally several times ruin my chances of getting in. Is there anything I can do to help my chances of getting in? Also, will admissions give me the chance to prove that I am Ivy League worthy?
5 AnswersHigher Education (University +)8 years agoComputer fan problems?
I have had this problem for about a two weeks now. I have a Toshiba satellite laptop and almost every time I use the computer for any period of time it overheats and shuts off. I have tried spraying it out with canned air and using SpeedFan, but neither one of these things worked. (SpeedFan didn't even see my fan). It is running, but at a very low RPM that isn't good enough to cool everything like it used to. Help.

1 AnswerSingles & Dating1 decade agoI really like this girl but she thinks I'm some kind of stalker. What do I do?
I really like her. I really know I'm better for her than a lot of guys. I was raised to treat a lady like a lady and it's like I have no idea what to do with her. It's like she's seen me during times when someone next to her would talk and thinks I stare at her. I've only looked at her like intensely twice. Every other girl in the school likes me but I'm only interested in her. I worry a lot that something might happen to her (mentally or physically) and it drives me insane... I'm actually planning to join the air force as an officer just to help protect her. Everyone calls me the perfect replica of Edward if you've read twilight... Please help.
