A few details about me: I live in a suburb of Edmonton, Alberta. I work in landscaping as laborer for the the most badass crew in the 780. In the winter I'm completing my science degree majoring in biology. I'm interested in all things involving science, art, living systems, the human body, and music. Musically, I love metal, some rap and hip hop, grunge, alternative, some pop. A bit of everything I guess. Favorite band = Bad Religion. I'm here on YA for fun but try to answer questions seriously when I can.

  • Why Down Tune Your Guitar?

I'm a serious lead electric guitarist who likes all genres, but I prefer to listen to metal when I have the choice. As far as I'm concerned, the argument that down tuning to drop C, B etc. makes your playing "moar heavy" is complete crap, and I don't get why players do it. The argument that it makes playing in a certain key easier is also no good because anyone who has played guitar for 2 years should know how to change keys, and chords according to the key (or get a capo if you can't/ are an acoustic guitar player). If you say that it expands the instrument's lower range, then learn to play bass.

What makes your playing heavy (or any quality for that matter) is the sum of three elements in music:

Tone, Melody, and Rhythm, all of which are a creative choice by the musician. The only one of these three things that is affected by downtuning is the tone, in which case, learn your way around your amp and your pickups...

Can anybody tell my why this is so popular a practice?

  • Making a vision board using MS Word super frustrating?

So I'm making a vision board and I won't get philosophical on whether they work or not, I just want to get this one done. I've got all the images I want saved on my PC and I've tried to get MS Word to make a collage of them without displacing all the images every time I move one around or re-size them, but it's not going well to, put it nicely. I'm not going the paper route where I print all the images off then physically cut and paste them, so my question is does anybody know what is the best program to use to simply and effectively create a "digital image collage" that is functional and professional? If you did use MS Word, what did you do to keep images in their place?

  • Is it gay for a guy to like a girl/woman for non-physical qualities?

This is a though one for me as a guy, seriously. I've always found personality, style, drive, and humour to be at least half the attraction towards the opposite sex; the other half being just physical. I didn't ever doubt this until I joined a construction crew a few years ago. Everybody on the crew listens to rap (rap is the s*** don't get me wrong) and objectifies women a la Snoop Dogg. Then, once I said, about a girl "she looked really nice". Big mistake. Apparently, to be a *real* man I should only see women as a set of body parts which I weigh on a scale of 1-10, and should have instead made anatomical refferences not suitable for YA. Who's right? Construction workers or me?

  • Why has Metallica, over the years, always treated their bassists like trash?

Except for Cliff, Ron McGovney had beer spilled down his bass then was electrocuted, and Jason Newstead had to put up with years and years of hazing and having his basslines turned down to levels which are barely audible. I personally think the other band members are assholes, although I worship their playing. What was their beef? Why did they hate their bassists (except Cliff and Rob). My hunch is that they used living bassists as their emotional punching bag for Cliff. Also I believe they treat their bassists like crap because Kirk, Lars, and James don't actually know how to compose music without a bassist holding their hand every step of the way so they just bully whoever that is into writing their new song, bassically because they're mad they can't do it by themsleves (hence why Metallica lost it's soul in the 90s).

What is your call? True or False?

As a side note, why the heck would YA put my question in pregnancy and parenting???

  • Why do we tip? Period, end of quesion, why?

I'm 19 and have never understood why people tip, give money away for nothing, to people already earning an hourly wage? I heard it was to be polite. I don't believe that you can buy politeness, however you can always buy phoniness. I also heard it was to ensure that a business serves only a target clientele of a certain class or status. Personally I don't want to eat anywhere that's exclusive based on wealth thank you Very much.

I have worked as the towel boy at a high class fitness gym, and as a landscape laborer, so I'm wondering, if we tip a waiter at say Boston Pizza, then why not tip the towel boy at your gym, or the landscape laborer. Are they not just as important? Don't they need the money just as badly?

We all work hard to earn a living, why should waiters and some other professions get a free ride?

  • What does Sinister Rouge allude to?

The Empire Strikes First by band Bad Religion features the song Sinister Rouge on track 2, and just out of curiosity I want to know what the lyrics are reffering to. lyrics include something about 'child molesters', and the CD is all about protesting the bush administration, so I'm guessing that it may be refering to either government or the church. Does somebody know what Greg Gaffin is talking about?

  • HP ink jet cartridges = extortion?

The question itself could be a news paper headline.

I want your opinion on Hewlett Packard's brutally expensive ink cartridges. Am I the only person who thinks that HP is extorting money from owners of their crappy home/office printers by making them pay $20+ for new cartridges??

In comparison, these cartridges contain as much plastic as the average McDonald's kid's toy, except with chemicaly engineered liquid inside. The cost of prducing one cartridge can't be more than $5-10 for HP meaning their profits on each sale is at least 200%! To me that is alarming.

    1) Does anybody else think this is more or less just consumer extortion? (I paid more for ink this weekend than I did for 60L of gas)

    2) Can somebody recomend a cheaper solution? (I'm stuck with this HP printer for a while now so a new one isn't an optoion)

    Thanks

  • SlipKnot songs?

It's obvious that Slipknot isn't realy a radio friendly group, not to mention family friendly, and the price of buying CDs is expensive. Now I need a cheap way to know if I like them or not since I'm on a tight budget and can't exactly just go out and buy the collection to find out.

In other words, what are their best downloadable tracks I could easily find online?

I'm a pretty hardcore fan of groups like Nirvana, the Offspring, Stone Sour, RATM, Audioslave, and AFI. Am I wating my time? I heard they're a lot like Stone Sour but darker. Help!

  • Building a U2 CD collection; where to start?

U2 seems to have a massive history of music, and I need to know what CD I should buy next (not download, I mean go into an actual store and buy). I Bought How to Dismantle... and liked it, I'd give it 4stars/5, but I know that artists can radicaly change their artistic dirrecton over the period of just one year, not to mention over two decades. Could somebody tell me: What is essential U2, and why?
