  • 1990s Pitcher pitching with helmet?

I seem remember there was a left-handed relief pitcher who pitched a few games with a hard batting helmet. I believe he had a brain tumor and his first name was Rob. I also believe he played for the Padres and Mariners. Anyone know who I'm talking about and what happened to him?

I don't mean John Olerud who played first base with a batting helmet.

  • Military Recruiting Commercials Misleading?

Many of armed forces commercials show such things as flying fighter jets and other cool stuff. However, becoming a fighter pilot, Navy SEAL or, other elite member of the military is a remote possibility.

For example, to become a fighter pilot you must have

    1. physical requirements

20/20 vision, no minor health problems (heart mummurs, diabetes, etc), be between a certain height. You cannot be too tall to be a pilot or serve on a submarine

    2. be an officer not enlisted. This means a college degree is required

    3. be accepted and pass in jet fighter program

Realize there are very few jet fighters (only about 22 B-2 bombers), submarines, etc. Therefore, the opportunities are very limited.

Are these commercials selling dreams that 99.9% will never achieve?

  • A question for alternative medicine promoters....?

I see a number of posters who constantly post alternative treatments for cancer (emu oil capsules, high dose Vitamin D, colonics, Ayurveda, various diets, etc.). Often these treatments are very simple and do not act with other medicines.

While you may believe your promoted treatment is a cure, how do you feel about all the other alternative "cures". You got to figure all of them cannot be right. Right?
