I really am having a tough time cutting down instruction time in Saxson Math Course 3 with my 8th grade students. I even have to skip the problem solving or other power-up activities to try to get my students to gain some of these concepts. It should be review and my students (I have 2 classes of 9 students-the smart ones, who are mostly 92-99th percentiles on the achievement test, ISAT, NWEA, but it seems like I have to reteach every single concept because there are holes in their problem solving skills in every area. For example, a week ago I would give a fraction, like 3/8 and say what percent is this and they have no clue. When I tell them think of the fraction bar as a division sign. Then a few put the 8 inside the division box....and leave that answer. so 3/8=2.666..., but they don't realize, hey that is bigger than 1, but 3/8 isn't. They told the other teachers on 15-20 minutes of lecture time. Is this possible? How could I get to the end of the book by years end?
