Will I get penalized for accepting contract work while collecting unemployment in Pennsylvania?
I am unemployed and collecting in PA. I have been desperately searching for work to no avail. I found a part-time freelance opportunity that can help supplement the small amount I collect from unemployment. The amount is small enough that unemployment isn't affected, but I am afraid that my "contractor" status will make UC think that I am trying to start my own business (which I'm not, I need full time work with benefits). Is it possible to take the work and not run into problems with unemployment?
5 AnswersLaw & Ethics1 decade agoUse Savings to Pay Off Debt?
A family member has about $15,000 in an ING Direct savings account. He was hoping to start a small business, but is nervous in this economy. He has about $11,000 of credit card debt. He is now considering using most of his savings to pay the debt, which would reduce his monthly cost/bills by about $500. His wife just lost her job, and he makes enough to make it through. Should he pay off the debt or hold on to the cash in this economy?

2 AnswersPersonal Finance1 decade agoWhat happens to my unemployment status when I make a commission as an independent contractor?
Have just started collecting unemployment (Pennsylvania) and was offered an independent contractor opportunity that is strictly commission. Will earning one or two commissions jeapordize my unemployment status? I would like to try the job but am scared that making one or two commissions will make me ineligible to collect unemployment and that if I can't make enough to sustain my household, I will be screwed. Please let me know if there is a way around this, I would like to be able to collect unemployment (for my designated weeks) when I don't make commission, but I'd like to try my hand at the job to see if I can make it. Help!!!!

2 AnswersCorporaciones e Industrias1 decade agoPA Unemployment Question - Allegedly Self Employed???
I was laid off, and filed for unemployment compensation. Though I received the maximum weekly benefit, it didn’t amount to even half of what my normal pay had been. I found a temporary job doing some typing from home (and the weekly amount earned was under the allowable amount), and reported that income from day 1, making sure I was doing everything honestly and properly. Because of how I was paid, however, and how I answered some questions (that I was rushed through) by a UC Benefits CSR, I was determined to be “self-employed” for all those weeks and therefore ineligible. This was determined after the fact, and UC is trying to make me pay over $5000!! There is no way I can afford to pay that, nor do I think it’s fair. I never considered myself to be self-employed, nor did I ever have the intention of becoming self-employed. Furthermore, I have extensive records (and witnesses) to prove that during the alleged “self-employed” period I was VERY actively searching for full-time employmen

2 AnswersPhiladelphia1 decade agoNeed a good road-trip family-friendly audio book recommendation.?
On a recent road trip, we listened to "Skipping Christmas," which is the novel that the movie "Christmas with the Kranks" was based on. We have 3 kids under the age of ten, and this book was perfect - no foul language, sex or violence, and it kept everyone entertained. Looking for something similar - and also contemporary. Can anyone suggest a good title or two?

2 AnswersCareers & Employment1 decade agoPGW (Philadelphia Gas Works) Customer Responsibility Program Question?
This is (hopefully) for a PGW employee who deals with CRP applications. Or, for a CRP applicant who has experience with this. The question: Does PGW actually verify income with your employer beyond taking the paycheck stub or employer letter? In other words, do they check your credit report or call the employer? Anyone have any experience with this?

3 AnswersOther - Business & Finance1 decade agoHubby Woke Up & Couldn't Breathe?
This has never happened before. Last night, in the middle of the night - my husband suddenly woke up gasping for air. No matter how hard he tried, he could not breathe - only made a strange wheezing sound, kind of like a cat about to cough up a hairball. He said he couldn't take in any air, and it wasn't until he calmed down, exhaled all the way and tried again that he could finally breathe. I am very scared about what this could be. Has this happened to anyone, or could any medical professionals offer any ideas as to what this might be????
