  • Is it possible for a hacker to read the documents on your PC?

If you have good Internet Security, can you get hacked and could the hacker read your documents?

I have my passwords saved to a documents, and someone just asked me if that was safe.

It never occurred to me that it might not be.

  • Does restoring back to factory settings get rid of an antivirus program that didn't completely uninstall?

I'm trying to plan ahead here a bit so I don't get all stressed out when I uninstall my old antivirus program, for a "clean" install of a new antivirus program. I bought CA Security (California Associates) about 7 years ago. In the meantime it was taken over by Total Defense, a company in India. They claimed they found 580 errors in my registry, when I gave them control of my computer to reinstall the software. I was pressured into buying a 1 year Iyogi support for $169.99 in order to proceed. That came due in January and though I cancelled it, the charge showed up on my bank statement. I just got it back last week, after umpteen emails and phone calls.

This is when I Googled them and learned of their bad reputation, not to mention the fact they make it hard to uninstall their software. I've tried to educate myself and learned I should first try to uninstall in safe mode because the uninstall through the control panel always yields an error message. I also found an article that notes the files it installs and where, if I need to try to do it manually in regedit. That makes me nervous, but I might try it.

If I can't get a successful uninstall, would restoring my computer back to factory settings take care of that problem? I know I can't install my new program (Kapersky) until I can successfully uninstall Total Defense.

    Thank you.

  • Is there a program that can put all my music at the same sound level?

I've downloaded music and made a playlist in my WinAmp. The volume is up to high on one song, fine on the next, and maybe too low on the next.

Is there a program that can make all my music play at the same volume? Also, if there are several, which is user friendly and relatively simple to use? It would be great if it's free, but I don't mind paying for it. I've downloaded hundreds of free Christian songs and enjoy them all the time.

    Thank you.

  • So what did Yahell Mail do now?

I was able to pick up my mail this morning. I got off about 7 AM to have breakfast. Then when I went back in now, I can't access my mail. The session keeps expiring. And I see so many others, even around the globe are having the same problem.

We've gone to hell on a greased sled since this new format. And the groups are still royally messed up too, though they've been working on that.

Yahoo, don't you see this problem now? When are you going to fix it?

  • How do you enable email settings to receive group invitations?

I asked a short while ago here, how to unblock an address from Google Groups. When I tried to add a member I got the message: "Some email addresses cannot be added to this group because their accounts are disabled or are blocked from Google Groups"

The answer I received here is : "Unfortunately, the issue is on your friends side. She has disabled the option to allow Moderators or Groups to 'Invite' her to a group. She will need to go into her email settings and change it to allow it again."

I'm having some more issues with this, I guess. Could someone tell me exactly how to enable group invitations in one's email settings? I've been looking around my email, IE and Google settings and can't seem to find it. Is it worded a certain way?

    Thanks for your help.

  • How do you get the traditional setting in the Neo Yahoo Groups, so stats don't get ripped?

We used to be able to set our mail to traditional, fully featured, or default. Now there seems to be no way to adjust the mail setting. The "default setting" in the Neo Groups obviously isn't traditional because the new members are reporting the stats are broken up. How do we fix this now?

  • New Yahoo Groups- How can you avoid Incredimail Stats from being broken up?

With the old format, we could put our settings to Traditional, which kept the stationary shares in tact. Now there is no option to do that.

How do we prevent stats from being broken up now, with the new format?

  • Successful Windows Update Repeats Itself. Is it alright that I disabled it?

I have Windows Vista. And the same two critical updates for Microsoft Office Suite 2007 have successfully installed 5 times over the past two days.

I realized when I got notice that updates were available and looked to see what it was. I had just updated my system. Then I saw it was the 4th time today that it wanted to install those two files (KB2760411 and KB2760588). At this point I disabled the updates. Each install reports it was successful.

I've never seen this before. It's like it doesn't realize it's already done the update.

  • Why isn't the info circulating in the groups here?

The Neo Yahoo change has caused so many problems. People can't post, Moderators are unable to approve new members, files disappear from the group website....

You can see more about what's going on with this info circulating in the groups now:

We can vote on returning Yahoo Groups to the previous setup. You can go and vote here. It will allow you to vote in 3 different amounts. Please vote the 3 votes as we really need to hit them with the maximum votes we can garner.

Please click the link and vote for the old format! Feel free to copy and paste this to other groups if they will allow you to so that all others can vote as well. No guarantee it will work but it cant hurt!

  • How do you protect yourself from being promoted to owner without your permission?

This just happened to a friend in one of the Yahoo Groups. She was promoted without permission to owner. She protested. She was then told all was well, they would put it back the way it was. And for one day it appeared by the homepage all was as it had been before the unwanted promotion. She was no longer listed as owner.

The next day they had changed her back. Only this time there were not two owners, only she was listed. So she couldn't just step down as owner. She protested and this was resolved again. To confirm she received a Yahoo notification that she is no longer owner, and is back to member status.

How can she be certain this does not happen again? She loves this group and would hate to have to leave because of this upset. We have some wonderful shares and it can be a lot of fun.

Would she, for example, be able to notify Yahoo Groups in such a way that the now owners cannot do this again?

  • How can someone un-appoint themselves as owner of a Yahoo group?

A group friend learned she was owner of the group, by a Yahoo notice that her membership had been upgraded. She was not asked first, it was just done. The previous owner does not answer my friend's emails. There is another owner listed for the group. She also does not answer.

What would my friend be able to do about this on her own? Could she change herself back to a regular member, just leaving the ownership to the existing "co-owner" who won't answer?

My friend just wants to be a member. What should she do?

  • Should I disable Java, after the Homeland Security warning?

I read the warning to disable Java due to a security flaw at http://www.zdnet.com/homeland-security-warns-to-di...

I don't know if this is an "official" type thing since I haven't seen the warnings "everywhere". Should everyone disable Java now?

    Thank you

  • Is Yahoo Mail acting up badly for anyone else?

For the last couple of days it takes two and three attempts to do anything, mostly having to close my browser and go back in before it works.

The messages are that the email "failed to load. Retry." And that they encountered a problem. "Close the browser and try again."

  • External Hard Drives- Which would you recommend?

I'm looking into getting an external hard drive for my movie downloads. Is one noted as "personal cloud storage" the same thing, or is that something else.

I was looking at Seagate and My Book. Which do you have and would recommend?

Also in playing movies from the external drive, would I need to defragment that like I do my C drive?

    Thanks so much.

  • Is a dual layer DVD as reliable for backing up data as a regular/single layer DVD?

I was wondering if there's any difference in quality. Are the dual layer (8.5 GB) DVDs as reliable, or should I just use 2 regular/single layer (4.7 GB) DVDs?

I bought some 8.5 GB disks and seem to think I'm better off not using them. Is there any truth to that?
