  • How to deal with a really negative and hateful mother?

My mother and I used to be really close when I lived at home (I've since moved out, about to graduate from college) even though, like other families, we definitely had our disagreements and fights. But within the last few years, she has turned into one of the most negative and mean-spirited people I have ever known. For instance, she always gets upset about how she has no friends - yet, many of the people that used to be her friends, she has now decided she hates for some reason or another, and I dread them ever coming up in conversation because she gets so hateful and horribly judgmental and harsh. Another example - my sister is about to graduate high school and go to college. She got into a good school that we simply cannot afford - instead of being understanding about this and supportive towards my sister, my mom has been making her feel horrible about going to the more affordable state school, insinuating that she's a loser, etc. When I talk to my mom about this on the phone, she sounds totally rational and understanding. But then I talk to my sister, and she tells me all the hateful, terrible things my mom has said to her - her actions are totally different from her words.

She always pits things as her versus the world. If I ever disagree with her on one thing, she gets all upset and says that I'm embarrassed of her/she's not good enough/she tries so hard and I just don't appreciate her/etc. She recently insisted that I delete some extended family off of facebook because they are "causing trouble" now that my grandpa is in a nursing home (they aren't). I told her I won't be petty and hurtful like that, and she got so mad at me.

I'm tired of trying to defend her actions. I'm tired of rationalizing the way she acts and the things she says, and having to tell my sister "well she's our mom, you know she loves you and just wants what's best for you...". Maybe that's true but I'm so sick of the way she acts - she's literally destroying our family. My sister can't wait to move out, my dad is constantly exhausted by her, and I'm terrified that my other younger siblings will grow up hating her.

What can I do? I know my mom has struggled with depression, and has terrible self esteem. I attribute most of her actions to these issues, but I'm running out of patience with her. I desperately want my mom to be happy, and I want us to get along and for our family to be happy together. I am at such a loss of what to do - she really doesn't listen to anything I say to her when I try to talk about this, and if it does seem to get through, it lasts for maybe a day at most. I'm at the point where I barely want to see her anymore, but I don't want to do that to the rest of my family whom I love to be around.

  • My grandpa is in a nursing home, about to be on medicaid, can he give me a monetary gift?

My grandpa is in a nursing home and his insurance is about to run out. He has some money saved, his house, and a car (overall not extremely valuable, his assets are definitely under $200,000 total). He could go through all of his life savings, sell his house, etc to pay for his nursing home. Or, he could go through his savings and then go on medicaid to pay for his nursing home (medicaid allows you to keep your house and 1 car). From what I understand, medicaid can take your home, savings, etc even after you have died to recoup their costs. My mom is under the impression that any money he spends that isn't accounted for as being spent on himself, the government will try to come take it back. So, say my grandpa wanted to give me a $1,000 gift for my graduation (this isn't a guise, he really does want to), and say he was on medicaid, would the government try to come take this money back from me after he dies in order to recoup medicaid costs? He lives in Texas, by the way.

Any guidance on this subject would be very appreciated, it's pretty complex stuff...

  • Am I eligible for Birthright Israel trip?

My maternal grandparents were both Jewish but didn't really practice, so my mom didn't raise me Jewish at all - in fact, because my dad is Christian, we have gone to church a few times. To be honest, I may have even been baptized as a baby but I don't know. I don't really know. But I'm really interested in my Jewish heritage and would love to make it on the Birthright trip... would I be eligible?

  • Balancing atoms, how many tons of C to make 1 ton of CO?

    This is my homework question:

The Fischer-Tropsch process turns coal (carbon=C) into gasoline=octane (=C8H18) by a series of chemical reactions. The first reaction combines carbon with water (steam) and heat to make water gas or coal gas, a mixture of hydrogen and carbon monoxide. C+H2O→H2 + CO. More hydrogen is added to run the F-T reaction. The final reaction is 17 H2 + 8 CO →C8H18 + 8 H2O.

    A) How many molecules of carbon do you need to react to make enough CO to make one molecule of octane?

    B) How many tons of carbon do you need to react to make one ton of CO?

    C) How many tons of octane can you make from that one ton of CO (and the other ingredients)?

    I got:

    A) 8

    B) 12/28 or 0.429 tons of C to make 1 ton of CO

    C) 114/28 tons of octane from 1 ton of CO

Is this correct? I basically have no idea what I'm doing, any help is appreciated.

  • Possible research project ideas in conservation biology?

I need to write a grant proposal for a hypothetical conservation biology research project for a class assignment. However, our professor didn't give us any examples or information to go on, and I don't have a background in biology so I'm not very aware of issues in biology/conservation that would need researching. I am interested in protecting endangered and ecologically important animals, and protecting marine habitat. If anybody has an idea or other form of inspiration I could use to get started on this project it would be much appreciated!

  • Should I get a transmission flush on my 112,000 mile car that has never had one before?

I have a 2002 Mitsubishi Galant, automatic transmission, with 112,000 miles on it. It used to belong to my dad, I got it a couple years ago and we have always kept up on maintenance for it. One thing that has never been done is a transmission flush. My dad claims that he had an old car with high miles on it and after a transmission flush, the transmission died... he believes it is because certain particles or whatever in the transmission became dislodged and messed up how it had been working. I don't know anything about cars so I have no idea if that's a crazy theory or not. My mechanic recommends I get my transmission flushed within the next 10,000 miles because he says the fluid is dirty (he showed it to me and it is indeed a brown color with some little specks in it). I am wondering if this is actually a good idea and something that would sustain the life of my car, or if it is risky to do because the car is old/high miles and has never had the transmission flushed before.

    Thanks for any advice!

  • What does it mean when the SRS light comes on when starting my car but then turns off?

I drive a 2002 Mitsubishi Galant with 112,000 miles. For a while I have noticed the SRS light comes on when I start my car but turns off within a couple seconds of the car being on. It's been in the shop for various things and none of the mechanics have ever mentioned the light to me so I kind of assumed it's not a problem. But I really know nothing about cars and don't even know what the SRS light means or what SRS stands for. If someone could explain what it is and if I should be concerned that it is coming on for a second when I start my car, it would be very appreciated!

  • Do I need a coolant flush along with getting my radiator replaced?

My radiator has a crack in it and unfortunately needs to be replaced. I took it to 2 shops to compare what they had to say. The first recommend replacing the radiator along with the upper and lower hoses. The second shop didn't mention anything about the hoses but said I need the radiator replaced and a coolant flush. I don't know much about cars, but if the entire radiator is being replaced then wouldn't it seem unnecessary to do a coolant flush? I'm imagining with a new radiator and hoses, new coolant would come along with that. But like I said I don't know much about it, I'm just trying to avoid getting ripped off but also want to do the right thing for my 112,000 mile car so that it keeps running.

  • finding volume of precipitation over a lake?

If 0.66 meters of precipitation falls over a lake in one year, and the lake has an area of 1,254,526.6 square meters, what is the volume of precipitation (in cubic meters) that falls over the lake in one year?

    1 AnswerMathematics8 years ago
  • How to convert meters to cubic meters for hydrology question (water storage)?

We are supposed to convert precipitation and evaporation rates of a lake from meters to cubic meters. This is the information I have:

    Precipitation = 0.66 m/yr

    Evaporation = 0.48 m/yr

Lake area = 1,133,120.8 square meters

Lake storage = 41,938,320 cubic meters

The question says to assume the lake has vertical walls for calculation purposes. So, how do I convert the evaporation and precipitation rates from meters to cubic meters for this question? Thanks!

  • How is life in Ireland (near Dublin) different from life in the US?

My family might be moving to Leixlip, Ireland from the US. I believe Leixlip is relatively close to Dublin. I'm curious how different life is in Ireland compared to average life in the US? Is school different? Community? Food? Weekend activities? Are people pretty happy living in this area? Any kind of information would be helpful... thanks!

  • Do you think government instability causes religious extremist groups to exist, or is it the other way around?

I'm writing a paper where I'm comparing the government instability in Pakistan to the relatively stable government of the UK. Originally, my idea behind the paper was that government instability is caused by the presence of extreme religious groups/terrorism/religious law. But then I was thinking about it more, and I started to wonder if it's the other way around, and those groups exist and are caused by the unstable governments. Now I'm all confused and can't get my thoughts straight! So... what do you think?

  • Day of bad diarrhea followed by a week of bloating, gas, constipation... what can I do?

One week ago I started suddenly having body aches, chills, a fever, but worst of all really bad watery diarrhea along with stomach aches and cramps. The diarrhea went away within 24 hours but I'm still having a lot of stomach/digestion problems. For most of this week I've been constipated, which just let up yesterday. But I'm still having really bad gas and bloating almost immediately after I eat anything. My stomach feels really unsettled and I can feel it rumbling around. I have not changed anything about my diet that may have lead to this. During the symptoms I've been careful to eat mostly mild foods but even those give me trouble, so I've given up and pretty much gone back to my normal diet (I'm a healthy vegetarian who doesn't eat much dairy) but haven't been eating a lot because I haven't been very hungry.

I don't know what kind of illness this is or what I can do about it, but it's getting frustrating feeling this way. I've been eating papaya enzyme tablets after I eat which help a small bit with bloating but not much. I'm thinking of taking some probiotics and seeing if that will help. Any advice is helpful... thanks!

  • Temp gauge shows car beginning to overheat but mechanic isn't sure what's happening?

I have a 2002 Mitsubishi Galant and for the past few months my temperature gauge will show my engine getting hot - highest I've seen it go is about 90% up but it has never actually overheated. It mostly does this if I'm driving in stop and go traffic (accelerating a lot), or going up a steep hill, or if I've been driving at a high speed for over 15 minutes or so. To get the temp gauge to go back down, I turn my heater up on full blast which always helps but sometimes it won't go all the way back down to where it should be.

Today I took my car to a mechanic but he couldn't give me a sure answer on what was wrong with it. He plugged that thing in to my car to measure the engine heat (sorry don't know the name, not much of a car guru) and he said that it was only a little warmer than it should be (I believe he said it was getting around 200 degrees or a little warmer) even though the gauge would be up at about 75%. All fans are working properly, radiator is fine, etc... so he suggested that it could be a problem with the thermostat in the car. He recommended getting the thermostat replaced and possibly a coolant flush.

Does this seem like good advice? Any ideas on what might be going on?

    Thanks!!
